Fall 2012 Internship Senator Amy Klobuchar

The Washington office of Senator Amy Klobuchar is currently accepting internship applications for the 2012 fall session. An internship with the Senator’s office is a terrific chance for students to gain first-hand experience with both the legislative process and constituent services in the United States Senate.

Interns assist the office in a variety of legislative and administrative capacities.  Interns support legislative staff by conducting policy research, attending briefings, and preparing for hearings. They are also asked to give tours of the U.S. Capitol to constituents and assist with constituent correspondence by letter, email, and phone.  During your time in the office, you will learn your way around Capitol Hill and become familiar with the daily operations of a senate office.

The fall internship runs from late August or early September through December and is available both part time and full time. If you will be attending classes while you are here we ask that you note that on your internship application, as well as what days and times you are available to work. We are happy to coordinate with educational institutions and students to develop internships for academic credit.

Internship 

Congressman Grijalva is pleased to offer congressional internships to those seeking legislative experience on Capitol Hill. Internship provides a tremendous opportunity to learn about the legislative process and to become more familiar with how our government operates.

Interns in my office will work closely with our legislative and press staff on a variety of issues. In addition to their work with the staff, interns will be asked to perform various administrative tasks that generally include, answering the office phones, opening and distributing mail, and responding to constituent correspondence. Every part of the internship is crucial to the day-to-day functioning of the office.

Internships are available year round and for variable lengths of time. Preference is given to those students and individuals from Arizona’s 7^th Congressional District, though consideration is given to all qualified applicants. Internships are unpaid. About the Office:  The Vaccine Litigation Group represents the interests of the Secretary of Health and Human Services in all cases filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act.  The cases involve claims of injury as a result of the receipt of certain vaccines.  

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The Vaccine Litigation Group is currently seeking undergraduate students for a limited number of Fall 2012 volunteer (unpaid), part-time legal intern positions. 

Interns work closely with attorneys and paralegals on substantive matters in all stages of litigation.  Indeed, the position offers a unique experience in public service.  The legal and medical issues at stake in each case vary greatly.  Attorneys and staff in the group handle heavy case loads, and while streamlined procedures are utilized, cases frequently involve complex liability and damages issues.  The Group is obliged to ensure that the Vaccine Trust Fund, from which damage awards are paid, is protected and, where eligibility criteria are met, that fair compensation is distributed to those whom Congress has intended.  Attorneys appear frequently before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which affords interns the opportunity to gain experience in trial and appellate practice. Interns should be able to start on or about September 4, 2012, and be able to commit 12 to 20 hours a week, for approximately 12 weeks, to the office.   

Qualifications:  Applicants should have excellent academic credentials (top 15% of class preferred), writing, and interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment, and have an interest in health care litigation.  Experience in some legal courses or with law-related work is strongly preferred.  Experience in medicine/science is strongly preferred but not required.  Current undergraduate juniors and seniors and MPH candidates are eligible for the positions.

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL)

University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) invites students to participate in a new study. The study investigates a person’s ability to read or hear sentences with distortion while undergoing functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) brain scanning. Several cognitive and language tasks will be administered in addition to fMRI.

Research participants must be fluent speakers of American English, right-handed, between 18 and 35 years of age, have good reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills in English, have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (contact lenses are fine, no eyeglasses), and normal hearing.  Research participants should NOT have any of the following: history of neurological and psychological disorders, or learning disabilities.

Compensation: $20 per hour for up to 2 ½ hours.

Fall 2012 Embassy of Israel Internships

About the Internship

Academic Affairs Department

Intern responsibilities include organizing events on university campuses in our region. Events range from political briefings, cultural events, diplomat speaker series, and bringing students and professors to the Embassy. Projects will be assigned based on the activities of the campuses and an intern’s individual strengths.

Cultural Affairs Department

Intern responsibilities include research on local venues, event planning, creating a database of local contacts, and creative outreach. Assignments vary depending on the sort of programs taking place each semester as well as the interns' strengths and creativity. Interns are always welcome to attend cultural events inside and outside the Embassy.

Media & Press Relations

Responsibilities include monitoring local newspapers, analyzing trends, doing political research and dealing with media issues related to Israel. Also includes cultivating and maintaining media contacts. Assignments vary depending on the sort of programs taking place each semester as well as the interns' strengths.

Public Affairs

Summer interns are fully responsible for organizing an intern briefing. This is an event for all summer interns in the DC area to come to the Embassy to hear a briefing by the Ambassador. Inters are also responsible for daily tasks such as answering phone calls, emails and mail. Interns may do research, follow political trends, and work on the Embassy newsletter and other publications as necessary. This summer in particular, interns will help with arrangements for the Israel @ 60 celebration on the national mall. Lastly, interns help with arranging events in Jerusalem Hall.

Events

Interns will have the opportunity to attend all briefings and events occurring at the Embassy.
