Fulbright awards are designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates (who are also US citizens) opportunities for international experience, personal enrichment and an open exchange of ideas with citizens of other nations. About 1500 Fulbright fully-funded grants are currently available to over 150 nations. There are two distinct types of grant: study/research awards for students who wish to investigate timely and significant topics abroad, and English Teaching Assistantships. There are two types of Fulbright grants:
 
--Fulbright Academic Study/Research Grant: Opportunities to conduct research are available in over 150 countries. Students design their own study/research projects. These grants generally provide round-trip transportation; book and research allowances; living costs for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; supplemental health and accident insurance; tuition, in some cases; and language or orientation courses, where appropriate.
 
--Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships: Opportunities to teach English language and conversation classes are currently available in 68 countries (the list is regularly updated and enlarged) including:

Award Amounts: In general, Fulbright grants for study and teaching cover the following costs: Round-trip transportation to the host country; Maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; Medical Insurance; and orientation programs, in some cases. Fulbright study grants may also provide: Book and research allowances; Full or partial tuition, in most cases.
 
Duration: Approximately one academic year; length and timing of awards varies by individual country and/or region.

Responsibilities: Interns with HCM Strategists perform a variety of tasks that support our partners and staff in our legislative, media, research and policy, and administrative work.

Legislative tasks may include:
  • Legislative research, including assembling information for clients related to federal or state-level education legislation;
  • Monitoring federal legislative hearings and mark-ups, either on-line or in-person and writing synopses of proceedings for client updates;
  • Compiling and assembling client briefing materials for Capitol Hill or Administration visits/meetings.

Media tasks may include:
  • Monitoring education policy-related publications for relevant news stories, related to client interests and activities;

Research and policy tasks may include:
  • Research on state and federal education activities;
  • Assembling information on relevant topics as needed; and
  • Attending meetings that may be of interest to clients and writing a synopsis.

Administrative tasks may include:
  • Compiling and assembling information requested by clients, as necessary;
  • Review of both client and HCM documents; and
  • Assisting with general client meeting planning tasks.

HCM will gladly work with the student’s academic department to ensure the internship meets course requirements, which may earn the student course credit for the experience. Intern is responsible for furnishing HCM with details of the course requirements, in order to ensure the experience aligns with the required objectives.

Justice & Markets Interdisciplinary Lecture Series: Capitalism, Marxism, & the Mickey Mouse Club

The Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets would like to invite you to our new Justice & Markets Interdisciplinary Lecture Series, which will be hosted by Snider faculty member, Christopher Morris. Dr. Morris is also the chair for the Philosophy department on campus.
For our first lecture, we will be hosting Dr. Jason Brennan from Georgetown University, for a public lecture titled, "Capitalism, Marxism, & the Mickey Mouse Club". In the debate between capitalists and socialists, some say that capitalists win at the level of practical politics while socialists win at the level of ideals. Capitalism is a good system for bad people; socialism is a good system for good people. Can the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, a CGI-animated children's show, settle the debate between capitalists and socialists, once and for all? Dr. Brennan is an assistant professor of Strategy, Economics, Ethics and Public Policy.

Rep. Grijalva Accepting Applications for Summer Internships through May 5th

Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva is accepting applications through May 5th for summer internships in Washington, D.C. and his various district offices in Southern Arizona.
 
In Washington
 
Interns work closely with legislative and press staff, answering office phones, distributing mail, and communicating with constituents. Preference is given to students and individuals from Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District, although all qualified applicants are carefully considered. Interns are unpaid and are responsible for lodging and transportation. Applicants are highly encouraged to explore scholarship opportunities that may be offered through their respective institutions or by other programs.
 
Anyone interested in working in the Washington, D.C. office should submit a cover letter, resume, and a one-page writing sample to Cristina Villa, Rep. Grijalva’s internship coordinator, at Cristina.Villa@mail.house.gov.

In Tucson, Somerton & Avondale
 
Interns at district offices help staff provide constituent services to residents of the Third Congressional District. Interns also perform administrative tasks and may be asked to work on special projects for public outreach, events and other needs of the office. Internships for the Tucson, Somerton, and Avondale offices are available at the beginning of each semester. There is no hard deadline, but earlier applications may be given priority.

SCHWARZMAN SCHOLARS – NEW AWARD FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN BEIJING, CHINA - INFORMATION SESSIONS THIS WEEK

Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders, the Schwarzman Scholars program is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.
 
Beginning in 2016, the Schwarzman Scholars program will give the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities. Students will live and study together on the campus of Schwarzman College, a newly-built, state-of-the-art facility, where all classes will be taught in English. Students will pursue degrees in one of three disciplines: Public Policy - Economics and Business - International Studies
 
CANDIDATE PROFILE: Schwarzman Scholars will be selected on the basis of high academic and intellectual accomplishment, proven leadership ability, evidence of entrepreneurial ability and exemplary character, and a demonstrated desire to understand other cultures, perspectives and positions. Cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher. Applicants must be at least 18 but not yet 28 years of age as of June 30, 2016.

Economic Development Administration Summer Internship Opportunities



We are seeking applicants for our summer internship program at the Economic Development Administration (EDA), U.S. Department of Commerce. EDA’s mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy. As the only federal agency, EDA drives collaborative regional economic development initiatives that lead to job creation.

The EDA Internship program is a full-time unpaid opportunity but a small commuting stipend can be provided. The program will run from Monday, June 8 to Friday, August 22. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in public policy, governmental affairs, legislative affairs, public affairs, business and/or community engagement. Interns will also have tours and meetings with Senior Leaders in government.

Then present your research at Undergraduate Research Day on Wednesday, April 29, 2015!  This year Undergraduate Research Day will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union, so your work will reach the widest possible audience.
 
The Undergraduate Research Day poster session will run from 1 to 4 pm on April 29 with set-up beginning at 12 noon. You can be present part or all of the time. All majors and fields of research ­ including creative and performing arts ­ are welcome!
 
Submitting a proposal is free and easy ­ you can find the form on the MCUR website at http://www.ugresearch.umd.edu/ugresearchday.php­ -  the deadline to submit your proposal is Wednesday, April 15 but we strongly encourage you to submit early. We look forward to learning about your work!

Join BPSA For a Free Screening of Dear White People

The Black Political Student Association will be showing a free screening of the movie “Dear White People”. We hope that this movie will ignite productive dialogue of race at the University of Maryland. This movie is about the not so widely discussed experiences of African American students attending college. It is important to talk about the issues within this movie amongst a diverse crowd as differences in race, culture, and experiences make our organizations, campuses, and perspectives more inclusive and understanding.
We would love for you to come join us next Monday, February 23 at 7:30 in Hoff Theater. You can receive updates from our twitter account, @bpsa_umd.

Law and Society Minor

Interested in the law and how it functions in our society? Fulbright awards are designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates (who are also US citizens) opportunities for international experience, personal enrichment and an open exchange of ideas with citizens of other nations. About 1500 Fulbright fully-funded grants are currently available to over 150 nations. There are two distinct types of grant: study/research awards for students who wish to investigate timely and significant topics abroad, and English Teaching Assistantships. There are two types of Fulbright grants:
 
Fulbright Academic Study/Research Grant: Opportunities to conduct research are available in over 150 countries. Students design their own study/research projects. These grants generally provide round-trip transportation; book and research allowances; living costs for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; supplemental health and accident insurance; tuition, in some cases; and language or orientation courses, where appropriate.
 
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships: Opportunities to teach English language and conversation classes are currently available in 68 countries (the list is regularly updated and enlarged) including:
  • Asia: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tajikistan, ThailandVietnam

A stipend is provided based on living costs in the host country. The Fulbright award covers round-trip international travel, health and accident insurance, and orientation costs.
 
Award Amounts: In general, Fulbright grants for study and teaching cover the following costs: Round-trip transportation to the host country; Maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; Medical Insurance; and orientation programs, in some cases. Fulbright study grants may also provide: Book and research allowances; Full or partial tuition, in most cases.
 
Duration: Approximately one academic year; length and timing of awards varies by individual country and/or region.

The GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP provides up to $5000 for study abroad for students who receive Pell Grants.  In the past three years more than 100 Maryland students have won Gilman Scholarships!

Schwarzman Scholarship for Global Leadership - Graduate Study in China

SCHWARZMAN SCHOLARS – NEW PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR ONE YEAR GRADUATE STUDY IN BEIJING, CHINA
Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders, the Schwarzman Scholars program is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.

Beginning in 2016, the Schwarzman Scholars program will give the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities. Students will live and study together on the campus of Schwarzman College, a newly-built, state-of-the-art facility, where all classes will be taught in English. Students will pursue degrees in one of three disciplines: Public Policy - Economics and Business - International Studies

CANDIDATE PROFILE: Schwarzman Scholars will be selected on the basis of high academic and intellectual accomplishment, proven leadership ability, evidence of entrepreneurial ability and exemplary character, and a demonstrated desire to understand other cultures, perspectives and positions. Cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher.Applicants must be at least 18 but not yet 28 years of age as of June 30, 2016.

Career Exploration Services at the Counseling Center

Here are some of the career exploration services available through the Counseling Center:

Majors Walk-In
 is held weekly on Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00 pm. No appointment is necessary.  Majors Walk-In is a great way for you to get started with your career questions and concerns. The computerized career exploration system, SIGI3, will help you with choosing majors and career path options that are suited to your interests, values, personality and goals.  SIGI 3 gives you access to information about hundreds of occupations, and the majors most commonly associated with those occupations, using the most up-to-date career information available.  Plan to spend at least 30 minutes becoming familiar and working with SIGI3. Afterward, you can continue work on your own computers through a secured access portal, which allows you to store information and come back to SIGI3 throughout their at Maryland. This service is mostly used by undergrads (freshmen through seniors), but can even be helpful to graduate students who are unsure of career direction. To take advantage of this opportunity, check in at the Main Reception desk on the 1st floor of the Shoemaker Bldg.
 
Career Exploration Group, Tuesdays, 1:00-2:30pm, is designed for undergraduate students who want to connect with others, explore their decision-making process, and utilize their strengths in the career exploration process. Career assessments will be taken as part of the group. In the group, you will will learn more about how to integrate your interests, values, and preferences into the process of choosing a major and/or a career and to identify and overcome barriers in this decision-making process. Individual Career Counseling, of course, is always available and encouraged for any student with career concerns and/or decisions to make. After signing up for an intake session, you will be assigned to a counselor who will work with you for up to eight (8) appointments in an individualized and personalized way.
