Research Analyst Job with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York

The Research & Statistics Group at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York conducts long- and short-term research and provides analytic support for the Bank’s responsibilities relating to monetary policy, banking supervision, payments systems, funding facilities and other economic and financial issues. In addition to contributing to the formulation and execution of policy in these areas, independent research is conducted on a wide range of topics such as: the links between financial markets and the macroeconomy; structural and financial issues affecting the health of U.S. and foreign banks and banking systems; risks associated with the international flow of payments among large financial institutions; microeconomic issues at the household or firm level; macroeconomic modeling and projections of U.S. economic activity and the federal budget; economic and policy issues of interest to the regional economy; and issues related to international finance and trade and the macroeconomic policies of major foreign economies.

The Research Analyst (RA) Program is a two year program that hires college graduates to assist economists with analyzing current public policy issues and events, as well as long-term, academic research questions. Many RAs have the opportunity to coauthor scholarly articles, blog posts, and other publications with the economists.

Responsibilities:

• At the direction of economists and senior research analysts or research associates, assist in the preparation of analyses, reports, and other materials for policy and research projects.
• Aid economists and senior staff in a timely fashion with their Bank policy projects. This support includes downloading and assembling data sets; preparing charts, tables and presentations; creating and maintaining spreadsheets; using statistical, econometric and other software packages to perform analyses, model estimation and simulations; and assisting in the preparation of memos.
• Assist economists and senior staff with their research projects. This support includes compiling literature reviews and archival research; data handling and configuration; presenting and maintaining data in attractive, user-friendly formats; running simulations, estimating models, and analyzing datasets with the use of statistical, econometric and other software packages; and writing and proofreading articles under the oversight of economists and senior staff members.
• Support: (1) the production of documents prepared for regular briefings of the Bank president, senior management, and the Bank’s Board of Directors; (2) the production of material included in the Blackbook and other briefing documents produced as part of the FOMC cycle; (3) the production of other reports to carry out the Bank’s and Research Group’s objectives; and (4) the performance of other tasks to carry out the Bank’s and Research Group’s objectives.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in using large databases and statistical packages (Stata, Matlab, SAS, R, Gauss, TSP, RATS, PROCSQL), or other significant computer programming experience (Java, C++, Mathematica, etc.).
• Strong analytical abilities.
• Ability to provide effective verbal and written analysis.
• Ability to meet strict deadlines and work cooperatively in a team environment.

Internship Opportunity with START for Spring 2016

START offers unpaid internship experiences on many of its large-scale research projects, including START’s flagship research project, the Global Terrorism Database, with the center’s Unconventional Weapons and Technology program as well as our HQ support teams such as Communications and Education. Throughout the course of their internship, participants are exposed to the most up-to-date theories, methods and information relating to the study of terrorism. They are versed in critical questions being tackled by homeland security practitioners, policy makers and researchers, and they are mentored in a successful, professional environment. 

The internship program is open to undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students (as well as some recent graduates) in any related discipline from any institution. Interns work onsite at START headquarters and often receive academic credit for their participation. Each internship lasts for one semester (or summer term). Participants work at least 10 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and 20 hours/week during the summer. Interns also participate in a program of enrichment and career development activities and receive mentoring from START researchers and staff.

Job Description

Jamie Raskin’s campaign for Congress in Maryland’s 8^th District is now accepting applications for a Fall internship program for both Grassroots Organizing and Finance oriented positions. Applications are open to highly qualified and motivated college and high school students. Grassroots Organizing: Grassroots organizing interns will experience all aspects of a modern field program, including: voter contact, volunteer outreach, cutting and managing turf, organizing phonebanks, and political strategy.

The Journal of Politics & International Affairs(JPIA) is seeking qualified student submissions to be published in the Fall 2015 issue. JPIA is a student-run journal that publishes papers written by undergraduate students in the areas of Political Science, International Studies, Economics, Public Affairs, Sociology and related fields. Publication in the Journal is an opportunity to reach a wider audience outside of the class, as well as a learning experience through the editing and feedback process. We seek to publish high quality papers that address current events and relevant subjects in the areas of politics and international affairs. Ideal submissions are both informative and argumentative, with well-developed theses and strong mechanics.

 

The Journal typically publishes 10-20 page essays written for upper-level courses, however we welcome submissions of any length and topic that falls within the scope of the Journal. All majors and class ranks are invited.
