Fishlinger Family Fund Scholarship

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is currently looking to award the Fishlinger Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to provide an annual, merit-based scholarship to a high achieving BSOS undergraduate student who has overcome medical or personal hardships. This scholarship is renewable through the recipient's senior year, provided they maintain their good academic standing (3.2 GPA or higher). The 2019-20 academic year award for this scholarship is: $10,000 

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
  • Currently enrolled BSOS undergraduate student. Preference given to rising sophomores, majoring in Government & Politics, but all BSOS majors may apply.
  • Exhibit exemplary academic standing, as evidenced by a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Exhibit financial need, as evidenced by submission of Financial Aid Offer Statement and Personal Statement of Financial Need.

The Minor in International Development and Conflict Management (MIDCM) invites you to the career panel “Diversity in International Development”, which will bring together a variety of individuals to share their experience of working in the field international development. While the field of international development is no exception to the diversity failures in other fields in the public and private sectors, awareness and discussion of diversity in international development increased greatly in 2018 in light of the #AidToo campaign. MIDCM is looking to further the conversation at the University by providing students an opportunity to learn more about what its like to work in the sector from various perspectives to which they might not easily be exposed otherwise. A panel of professionals in international development, including MIDCM alumni, will discuss their own career paths and experiences in the field.

International Communication and Marketing Internship

Location: Any location possible; Washington DC preferred
Compensation: $500 stipend per semester
Hours: Flexible, minimum three days / week

What you do for APSIA:

  • Create website, social media, video, print, and other content to promote APSIA and its events to relevant audiences around the world
  • Work with the Admissions Manager to publicize APSIA events to target audiences in different locations around the world across all channels
  • Create student and alumni profiles for APSIA’s website and marketing materials to tell the story of what can be done with an APSIA degree
  • Work with Executive Director and Admissions Manager to evaluate marketing analytics and Return on Investment
  • Work with the Admissions Manager to grow APSIA’s network of student advisors and influencers in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America
Additional projects may include:
  • Work with the Executive Director to promote APSIA, its programs, and its members to the international affairs industry in Asia and Europe (think tanks, academic institutions, governments, etc.)
  • Work with the Executive Director and regional committees of members to identify prospective members and affiliates in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America
  • Identify and support APSIA and/or its members’ participation in relevant events in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America

What you bring to APSIA:

  • Status as current graduate or undergraduate student or recent graduate.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills in English. Additional language skills a plus.
  • Excellent command of MS-Office Suite.
  • Experience with Canva, WordPress, MailChimp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and social media scheduling tools (ex: Hootsuite).
  • Basic HTML helpful.
  • Experience creating social media graphics preferred.
  • Previous office experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask with minimal supervision required.

The Pre-Law Advising Office, through a collaboration with Princeton Review, is offering a full-length LSAT preparation course at a significantly discounted rate to students who receive the Pre-Law Advising/LSAT Award.  This opportunity is available to all currently enrolled full-time students, regardless of major, and is intended to provide support for students intending to apply to law school who may not otherwise be able to afford this valuable opportunity due to personal or financial circumstances.  Students must be planning to take the LSAT in 2019.

How to Understand the Development of the Chinese Government

Dean, Zhou Enlai School of Government, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.

Dr. Tao SUN is a Professor of Public Administration and Policy, the Dean of the Zhou Enlai School of Government, and the Director of the Centre for Public Management Education, at Nankai University. His PhD was in Political Science from Nankai University, but his MBA was earned at the University of Chicago, and his MA in Economics is from University of Iowa. His specialties are urban governance, public service, and local government. He is currently working on a joint project for sustainable, healthy, and learning cities and neighborhoods with Glascow University. Hosted by the Confucius Institute at the UMD. (The talk will be in English.)
