Declaring GVPT

Government & Politics is a limited enrollment program at the University of Maryland. Limited enrollment programs require students to take specific courses and meet minimum grade requirements, otherwise known as gateway requirements, to gain access to or remain in the major.

First Semester Freshmen

Students in their first semester at UMD may declare the GVPT major without having to complete the gateway requirements first, as long as they complete the major change process prior to the last day of the semester. Once admitted to the major, first semester freshman have 45 credits (excluding AP/IIB credits) to complete the following gateway requirements and remain in the major:
  • GVPT 170 with at least a "B" or higher
    • Students with AP credit for GVPT 170, must complete GVPT 241 with at least a "B"-" or higher
  • MATH 107, 120, 140 or STAT 100 with at least a "C-" or higher
  • Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or higher to remain in the major

Internal Transfer Students

Current UMD students beyond their first semester that wish to declare the GVPT major may apply to the major after completing the following gateway requirements:
  • GVPT 170 with at least a "B" or higher
    • Students with AP credit for GVPT 170, must complete GVPT 241 with at least a "B"-" or higher
  • MATH 107, 120, 140 or STAT 100 with at least a "C-" or higher
  • Must have cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 (includes UMD and all previous transfer coursework)
Students who wish to add GVPT as a double major must have a cumulative  UMD GPA of at least 3.0.

External Transfer Students

Students transferring to UMD from another institution may be directly admitted to the GVPT major if they complete the following gateway requirements prior to the first day of classes in their first semester at UMCP:
  • GVPT 170 with at least a "B-" or higher
    • Students with AP credit for GVPT 170 may substitute a 200-level GVPT course in which a grade of "B-" or higher was earned
  • MATH 111, 140, 220 or STAT 100 with at least a "C-" or higher
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 (includes all previous transfer course)

Limited Enrollment Policies
  • Students can only repeat one requirement one time among the gateway requirements.
  • Courses must be taken at UMD unless previously transferred.
  • Students may apply only once to an LEP. Students who are academically dismissed or who leave the major cannot return to the major.
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.

Major Change Process

Declaring the GVPT major is a two step process. The first step is completing a change/addition of major workshop with the GVPT Advising Office. If a student cannot attend a major change workshop, they may schedule an appointment with an advisor. The second step is completing a graduation planning workshop with BSOS Advising. Students must meet with GVPT before completing the BSOS workshop. Applying to the major involves submitting paperwork that you will receive at both workshops. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
