Fall 2019 Intern for a Day


INTERN FOR A DAY - Fall 2019
Mandatory Orientations Occur Next Week!

Intern for a Day connects undergraduate UMD students with alumni, parents, employers and community partners for one day job shadowing experiences.

 
In order to receive an application to participate in Intern for a Day, students must attend an informative, 30-minute orientation session that will cover the application process, how students will be matched with a host, best practices when shadowing the host on-site and how to show appreciation to the host after the experience.

Please RSVP for the session that works best with your schedule.  You will be redirected to Careers4Terps when clicking on the link below.
Students will receive the application after attending one of the orientation sessions above. Applications will be due Sunday, October 13 at 11:59pm.

The majority of questions about Intern for a Day's process and structure will be addressed during the mandatory orientation session.  For other questions or concerns, please email ifad@umd.edu.

Students who have already participated in Intern for a Day still need to attend one orientation session.

Smith Business Minor Information Session

The Smith Business Minor program will be hosting two upcoming information sessions for students who would like to explore the possibility of adding one of three Business minors to their academic portfolio. 

Students who are interested in Business Analytics should attend the Tuesday, October 1st session at 6 pm in Van Munching 2511. While those interested in General Business or the Innovation & Entrepreneurship minors should attend the information session on Thursday, October 3rd at 6pm in Van Munching 1330.

Intern with the Helsinki Commission

The Helsinki Commission advances American national security and national interests by promoting human rights, military security, and economic cooperation in 57 countries in Europe, Central Asia, and North America.

Interns at the Helsinki Commission join a team of world-class experts at a unique bicameral, bipartisan, inter-branch federal commission. Interns assist staff with planning hearings, briefings, and other events; attend and report on conferences and Congressional hearings; welcome and assist visitors to the commission; and perform other administrative duties.

APPAM Public Policy Camp

The Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) in collaboration with the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University is holding a policy camp for undergraduates interested in policy. Maryland General Assembly Internship

The Maryland General Assembly internship gives students the opportunity to serve as legislative interns. Your responsibilities might include conducting legislative research, tracking bills, attending committee hearings, or writing correspondence, among other duties. This internship is paid and stipend information can be found in the applicationIf you hope to earn upper-level GVPT credit by interning at the MGA you must apply to GVPT first, not directly to the MGA. 

If you are interested in applying to the Maryland General Assembly Internship, please submit the following application materials to Rachel Vierling - rvierlin@umd.edu - by 5:00pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2019:

  • Completed GVPT-MGA Application - Do not fill out the Sponsoring Professor section
  • Required attachments (Also listed on page 3 of the application)
    • A short biographical essay, similar to a cover letter, describing yourself, your abilities, and experiences. Include why you want to intern at the MGA, what interests you about state government, and what you hope to gain.
    • One-page resume that should include your education, any academic honors, previous work experience and internships, and if you speak a second language.
    • A current unofficial transcript
  • A short writing sample, less than 2 pages, that illustrates your research, analysis, and critical thinking skills

Job Opportunity with the Town of Bladensburg

Grant Writer Contractor Job Description:
The Grants Writer Contractor position will be responsible for performing high-level professional work related to grant seeking, grant administration, coordination and management of Town of Bladensburg grants. Grant seeking and grant administration activities will include any or all of the following: research and identify grant funding opportunities and grant funding needs; research and develop federal, state, private grant funding sources; develop and catalog grant resources and other grant related resources.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Researches potential grant funding opportunities both public and private at local, state, and federal levels and determines applicability of program resources to meet the Town’s needs.
  • Recommends potential funding opportunities for consideration based on research and confers with the Town Administrator.
  • Prepares and writes grant proposals on both operating and capital projects.
  • Submits draft grant applications for review and approval and ensures all grant applications are submitted in a timely manner along with any required documentation.
  • Develops a grant funding resources database and library.
  • Assists with grant monitoring (monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually) and prepares both program and financial reports to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Monitors grant budgets and reconcile grant expenses in concert with the Town Treasurer.
  • Compiles request for funding.
  • Assists with preparing award agreements with recipient agencies.
  • Establishes and maintains a master grant inventory system to track grant awards.
  • Initiates grant procedures to be followed on each grant award.
  • Provides assistance and guidance in resolving issues and conflicts with grant funding agencies.
  • Provides timely advice and information on grant funding opportunities, requirements and procedures.
  • Reviews all resulting proposals and leads the Town’s in grant compliance.
  • Develops and updates a quarterly report regarding Town wide grants activity and funding status.

Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelors’ Degree in
Political Science, Finance, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field;
supplemented with at least two years’ experience in local, state or federal government with direct experience in grant writing and project management. Experience working a private foundation or non-profit organization may be considered. However, preference will be given to candidates with governmental experience.

The position requires the contractor to be able to work from both home and to come into Bladensburg. The contractor will determine with the Town Administrator what days and hours he or she will be onsite. The candidate will not be considered an employee of the Town; therefore will have no claim to benefits or job rights.
