Careers in Community Organizing for Social Justice

DART will hold an online info session on Tuesday, April 13 at 6pm eastern to discuss careers in community organizing. All UMD students and alumni welcome, particularly those graduating before January 2022.

DART trains professional organizers and community organizations how to work for social, economic and racial justice, including:

* Holding police departments accountable

* Shutting down the school-to-prison pipeline

* Reining in predatory lenders

* Expanding access to primary health and dental care

* Prioritizing funding for affordable housing and job training

* Fighting for immigrants' rights  


Associate Community Organizer starting salary $40,000/year + benefits. 

Positions begin on June 7, 2021, August 9, 2021 or January 10, 2022 in:

Florida: Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, St. Petersburg

Kansas: Topeka, Wyandotte County, Johnson County

Kentucky: Louisville, Lexington

Young Men's Democratic Club of Prince George's County Fellowship Program

 The Maryland Democratic Party is excited to launch the Young Men's Democratic Club of Prince George's County Fellowship Program this summer. This fellowship will give young leaders hands-on experience with both state and national politics. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with the political, fundraising, digital, communications, data, field, and operations departments.  


The fellowship will cover an eight-week period this summer. Fellows will either work remotely or out of the Maryland Democratic Party office in Annapolis depending on need and public health guidance. Fellows will be expected to commit at least twenty hours per week. Up to a $2,500 stipend will be paid to each fellow to cover related expenses. In addition to a stipend, these individuals will gain valuable experience on the inner workings of Maryland Politics. Fellows will develop valuable skills and relationships working with Maryland Democratic Party staff and elected officials.

Apply to be a Spring 2021 BSOS Commencement Speaker!

Attention Graduating Seniors!

As you prepare to embark on your next journey after graduating from the University of Maryland, what reflections would you share with your fellow graduates?

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will select two students, one undergraduate and one graduate student, to deliver a 3-minute speech at a commencement event. The theme of the speech is entirely up to you, but must speak to all graduates from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

A winning speech will:

  • Emphasize experiences unique to the University of Maryland and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences
  • Have a clear theme
  • Be well-written
  • Be delivered in 3-4 minutes

The selected student speaker will get to deliver their message to students, faculty, and guests during a BSOS commencement event. 

 Eligibility

  • A GPA of 3.50 or better
  • Cleared for Spring 2021 graduation
  • Undergraduate candidates must have completed at least 60 credits at the University of Maryland, College Park 

 You will be required to answer the questions below along with the submission of a resume/CV and 2 references:

1. What is your BSOS and Maryland journey? 

2. What would be 1) memorable UMCP experiences, 2) experiences unique to BSOS 3) other reflections, and 4) goals/hope for the future that you would want to share with the audience?

3. Why do you feel like you should be selected to be featured among your graduating class?

Intern for a Day Lite will match UMD undergraduate students with professionals working in a field of interest for 30-60 minute virtual informational interviews!


Want in?  Enroll in and complete this 20-minute asynchronous online orientation open now and available until Monday, March 22 to learn about the program and best practices on how to conduct an informational interview.

Daniel Chen, SOCY '18 Compliance Analyst, National Electrical Benefit FundDaniel graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2018 with a degree in Sociology and minors in Business and Sustainability. He currently works as a Compliance Analyst at the National Electrical Benefit Fund. His past experiences include work in legal services, sociological research at UMD, and volunteering with the National Park Service.

ACES Cybersecurity Minor-Applications Due March 15!



 Just a reminder that the ACES Minor is accepting applications for the Fall 2021 semester! 


The ACES Minor is a 16-credit academic minor open to students of all majors. Students gain practical skills in cybersecurity through technical and non-technical coursework, group projects, internships and research opportunities. 


This curriculum is bolstered by regular interactions with cybersecurity industry leaders both in the private and public sector who serve as mentors and professional networks for ACES Minor students.


The ACES Minor is also an Upper Level Concentration for Computer Science students! 


Students can submit the application via the ACES website at aces.umd.edu. Applications are due March 15, 2021.
