Join us for Alternative Breaks Experiences this Year!
Program Details:
Alternative Breaks (AB) are week-long service-learning immersion experiences during the university's Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks that address social issues in local, national, and international communities. Students can lead or participate in the experiences, and there are mentoring opportunities for faculty & staff!
The Alternative Breaks Experience looks to build a world in which UMD students are empowered learners in community together, taking action toward just causes.
Interested students must be willing to commit 1.5 hours/week for 5 weeks leading up to the experience
Experiences are typically $100 - $200, however there are opportunities for fundraising and scholarships
Who should participate?:
Any student that wants to explore community development, civic engagement, local issues, leadership, and service.
Undergraduate and graduate students interested in exploring social issues that include environmental conservations, education, socioeconomic inequality, healthcare, and more.
How will you benefit from participating?:
Connect with a community of peers from across campus and create new friendships.
Develop and practice personal and group leadership skills such as active listening, reflection, critical thinking, and communication.
Learn how to best engage and serve communities.
What should I expect?
Engage in short-term service-learning immersion experiences that address social issues in local, national, and international communities.
Learning and discovering root causes about different social issues through service
Active engagement in personal reflection, listening, small group dialogue, and small group activities.
Thought-provoking questions and dialogue around social issues.
Making connections between social issues and your academic, personal, professional, or civic life.
Identifying at least one action step to take towards a social issue you are passionate about.

RosettiStarr Summer 2024 Paid Internship

The internship is in-person and full-time, Mon.-Fri., 9-5 in Bethesda, MD. We typically do two summer sessions, one in June and one in July, exact dates TBD.

The goal of the program is to train individuals in research, public records, writing and analysis with the intent of converting interns into full-time analysts at the end of the summer. We're happy to accept anyone graduating in spring 2024, undergrad or Master's.

Spring 2024 Sadat Chair Undergraduate Assistant Position
The Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development is accepting applications for an
undergraduate student assistant for the Spring 2024 semester. This is a paid position at
$15.00/hour.
The requirements:
- Undergraduate at UMD
- Excellent written and oral communications
- Strong attention to detail
- Good at working in a team setting
- Research experience (research done as coursework included)
- Event logistics experience
Preferred:
- Major is in GVPT or BSOS
- Knowledge of SPSS, Microsoft Office Suite, and/or Adobe Acrobat
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Middle East
The Role:
The Sadat Chair Undergraduate Assistant reports directly to the Sadat Chair Program
Coordinator and will occasionally work with the Sadat Professor for Peace and Development.
The undergraduate assistant works on a multitude of tasks that aid the Coordinator in the day-to-
day logistics of managing the program as well as assisting with larger events and long-term
research.
- The day-to-day logistics may include drafting email correspondence, drafting tweets, proofing documents, organizing filing systems.
- Event logistics may include drafting event flyers and announcements, helping set up events and clean up after events,
- Research may include coding open-ended question data to be analyzed and writing memos on topics related to articles and book projects the Coordinator and Professor are working on. Current research topics include but are not limited to: the Middle East to include Israel/Palestine, the Ukraine War, race relations in the U.S., threats to democracy globally and domestically, Evangelical Christians in politics, and the 2024 election.

ODK applications are now open!
Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society applications are now available. Eligible junior, senior, and graduate students should visit www.odk.umd.edu to begin the application process. Membership applications must be received electronically no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14.
Additionally, applications for ODK Top Ten Freshmen and Sophomore Leader of the Year awards will open on Wednesday, January 31, and close on Wednesday, February 21 at 4:00 p.m.
Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients/US Citizens
Are you an undergraduate student, Pell Grant recipient, and U.S. citizen? Are you interested in studying abroad? You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International
In the last two years 82 UMD students received the Gilman scholarship, with a 36% acceptance rate! These students won a total of $329,500!

· a U.S. citizen
· a Pell Grant recipient
· undergraduate (includes all majors)
· all program lengths are eligible
2024 BSOS Summer Scholars Program Announcement
The BSOS Summer Scholars program supports undergraduate students doing independent research projects with faculty in the summer. Recipients will gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, national scholarships, and other awards. Students may expand their research into an independent study or Honors thesis during the following fall semester. The program is modeled after, but separate from, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) Summer Mentorship Program. Students may apply for both opportunities but may only accept one.
There will be a maximum of six awards of $3,000 each. Applications must include the following:

an unofficial copy of the student's transcript and any other evidence of the student's scholarly accomplishments;

a one-page personal statement from the student about their long-term professional/intellectual goals, how this fellowship and research project would advance those goals; and
-
a letter of recommendation from a BSOS faculty member addressing the merit of the proposed summer research, the student's qualifications to undertake the project, and a mentoring plan. The letter (or email) of recommendation should be sent to bsosresearch@umd.edu by Friday, March 1 at 12:00pm (noon) with the subject line "BSOS Summer Scholars - [Scholar Name]".
Students and their mentors are responsible for ensuring that the three parts of the application are complete and submitted by the deadline. The Faculty member must have an appointment in a BSOS department or center and the student must be a BSOS major.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a freshman, sophomore, or junior
- Must have at least a 3.4 GPA
Proposals are due by 12pm (noon) on Friday, March 1.
