• Description:

The BSOS Summer Scholars program supports undergraduate students doing independent research projects with faculty in the summer. Recipients will gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, national scholarships, and other awards. Students may expand their research into an independent study or Honors thesis during the following fall semester. We expect applicants will also apply for the campus Maryland Summer Scholars program which is due on February 14, 2022 and can be found here. Students may apply for both opportunities but may only accept one.

• There will be a maximum of four awards of $3,000 each. Applications must include the following:

  1. an unofficial copy of the student's transcript and any other evidence of the student's scholarly accomplishments;
  2. a one-page personal statement from the student about their long-term professional/intellectual goals, how this fellowship and research project would advance those goals, and to what degree this proposal is in response to research or travel restrictions due to COVID; and
  3. a letter of recommendation from a BSOS faculty member addressing the merit of the proposed summer research, the student's qualifications to undertake the project, and a mentoring plan.

Proposals are initiated by the undergraduate student and completed by the Faculty mentor who provides the support letter via this application system. The Faculty member must have an appointment in a BSOS department or center and the student must be a BSOS major.

Maryland Summer Scholars Program for 2022

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.

Many Summer Scholars expand their summer research into an independent study or honors thesis project the following autumn semester and find that their research experience helps distinguish their applications for graduate study, fellowships, internships, employment, and other competitive opportunities.

Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. Students whose projects require travel for an extended period of time to off-campus locations (not to include regular commuting) may submit a travel supplement request as directed in the online application form. Travel supplements will not exceed $1,000.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for an MSS award: if you have earned 12 or more UMD course credits (not including AP or IB credits) by the date of the application deadline; if you have a cumulative UMD GPA of 3.40 or higher by the date of the application deadline (no rounding); and if you expect to receive your undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2021. All academic majors are eligible.

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for the summer 2022 awards will be Sunday, February 14, 2022. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

Important Tax Information: Please note that MSS awards are subject to taxation as personal income, and awardees should plan accordingly; tax withholding may apply.

YOUNG MEN’S DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Maryland Democratic Party is excited to announce the Summer 2022 Volunteer Fellowship Program sponsored by the Young Men’s Democratic Club of Prince George’s County. This fellowship will give young leaders of all genders a hands-on experience with both state and national politics. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with the political, fundraising, digital, communications, data, field, and operations departments.  

The fellowship will cover an eight-week period this summer. Fellows will either work remotely or out of the Maryland Democratic Party office in Annapolis depending on need and public health guidance. Fellows will be expected to commit at least twenty hours per week. Up to a $2,500 stipend will be paid to each fellow to cover related expenses. In addition to a stipend, these individuals will gain valuable experience on the inner workings of Maryland Politics. Fellows will develop valuable skills and relationships working with Maryland Democratic Party staff and elected officials.

Fellowship Applicant Requirements

1. Must be a registered Democrat.
2. Must be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in political science and/or related field of study.
3. Must be a Prince George’s County resident and/or attending a higher education institution in Prince George’s County.

 AFCEA EPIC Intelligence Community Outreach Event

Wednesday, January 26, 2022 • 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. | Virtual Event

The AFCEA Emerging Professionals in the Intelligence Community (EPIC) committee is organizing an academic UMD outreach event on January 26, 2022 from 6 to 7:30pm EDT. This event will be a virtual panel of EPIC members answering questions submitted at registration by attending participants. Following a 30-45 minute period of answering these questions, panelists and other EPIC attendees will manage breakout rooms focused on specific schools and interests wherein participants from the academic community can engage directly with the panelists. 

This event is aimed at current or recent academic graduates across all fields of study and both undergraduate and graduate. Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program

 The Partnership for Public Service recently launched the Future Leaders in Public Service internship program. The program is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to explore a career in public service while gaining valuable work experience.

Program Highlights 

• Students receive a $4,000 stipend and a 10-12 week summer internship
• The placement sites are at the Department of Commerce and Department of Transportation
• Professional development workshops will supplement the internship experience
• Students from any academic background or major are welcome to apply

The application deadline for students to participate this summer is January 31, 2022 at 11:59pm.
