Intern for a Day 2018

Intern for a Day connects undergraduate UMD students with alumni, parents, employers and community partners for one day job shadowing experiences.

 
In order to receive an application to participate in Intern for a Day, students must attend an informative, 30-minute orientation session that will cover the application process, how students will be matched with a host, best practices when shadowing the host on-site and how to show appreciation to the host after the experience.


Spring 2018 Intern for a Day Orientation Dates (Total of 8 Sessions Available):

Please RSVP for the session that works best with your schedule.
Students will receive the application after attending one of the orientation sessions above.  Applications will be due Sunday, February 11 at 11:59pm.

The majority of questions about Intern for a Day's process and structure will be addressed during the mandatory orientation session.  For other questions or concerns, please email ifad@umd.edu.

Students who have already participated in Intern for a Day still need to attend one orientation session.

Data Analysis Summer School Opportunity


2018 BSOS Summer Scholars Program

We are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for 2018 BSOS Summer Scholars. These are awards of $3000 to undergraduate students to support independent research projects with faculty in the summer. This program is modeled after, but separate from, the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research's (MCUR) Maryland Summer Scholars Program. Recipients will gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, national scholarships, and other awards. Students may expand their research into an independent study or Honors thesis during the following fall semester.

There will be a maximum of four awards given. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors with at least a 3.4 GPA may apply. 

Applications should include:

a) an unofficial copy of the student's transcript and any other evidence of the student's scholarly accomplishments;
b) a letter of recommendation from a BSOS faculty member addressing the merit of the proposed summer research, the student's qualifications to undertake that project, a mentoring plan; and
c) a one-page personal statement from the student about their long-term professional/intellectual goals, and how this fellowship and research project would advance those goals.

BSOS Summer Scholar proposals are jointly submitted by the undergraduate student and the Faculty mentor who provides a support letter. The Faculty member must have an appointment in a BSOS Department or Center and the student must be a BSOS major.

Human Trafficking in Context: The Vulnerabilities Associated with Being a Refugee in Italy

Students, join the CCJS Department in Italy this summer! 

Over the course of two weeks you will explore Rome, Sorrento, the Amalfi coast, Pompeii, and possibly also Capri! You will visit the Refugee Center in Rome and work with a refugee support organization (LESS) in Sorrento.  The trip will focus on understanding the challenges faced among the refugee population but will also feature cultural activities and site seeing.  You can expect amazing experiences, lifelong friendships, and a new lens through which to see the world.  Plus you will eat GREAT food!

As the nation’s first living-learning entrepreneurship experience, the Hinman CEOs Program selects entrepreneurially-minded students from all academic disciplines to join a unique community to explore and practice innovation. Students live together, learn about entrepreneurship, and can launch new ventures. The mission of the Hinman CEOs Program is to foster an entrepreneurial spirit, create a sense of community and cooperation, and develop ethical leaders.

BSOS graduating seniors are invited to join the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) "100 Days until Graduation" event on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 4-6 PM for a pre-graduation celebration! BSOS seniors, alumni and faculty/staff are invited to attend to help us congratulate our seniors on their upcoming achievements. 

Come to our carnival themed extravaganza! There will be carnival games and prizes, delicious treats, and beer tastings. Take selfies with Testudo, have fun in our interactive photo booth, and mix and mingle with our graduating seniors.
Hosted by the BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC) and the BSOS Alumni Chapter Board.

Ralph Bunche Summer Institute A

Now in its 32nd year, the APSA Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) is an annual, intensive five-week program held at Duke University. It is designed to introduce to the world of doctoral study in political science those undergraduate students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups or those interested in broadening participation in political science and pursuing scholarship on issues affecting under-represented groups. Participants in the RBSI are drawn from a competitive national applicant pool.

The Center for Geospatial Information Science (CGIS) at the University of Maryland is pleased to present the Master of Professional Studies in Geospatial Intelligence (MPS GEOINT). The MPS GEOINT program provides workforce-focused technical training that gives graduates the skills and expertise to lead new initiatives in the rapidly shifting landscape of GEOINT applications, data collection systems, analytic methods, and mission support. The master's program may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis, and may be taken fully online or on-site. The MPS GEOINT degree can be completed in as little as 15 months.

Latino Research Fellowship Opporunity


CAPC was granted funds by the Fund for Latino Scholarship at the American Political Science Association to hire a Research Fellow to work on issues related to race and ethnicity in American politics. The fellow will work with a faculty member who directs their research for the semester and helps them develop a unique project. The fellow will be given formal training in writing, data analysis, public speaking/presentation skills, conducting academic research, and formulating cogent research questions. The fellow should be interested and excited about the possibility of going to graduate school in a social science field.

CAPC Research Assistantship Program

The CAPC Research Assistantship Program is for students interested in developing their research and professional skills as well as gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the study of American politics. Research Assistants (RAs) are paired with a faculty member who directs their research for the semester as well as helping them develop a unique project based at least in part, on the research they are conducting on behalf of the faculty member. In addition, students are also assigned a graduate student to help mentor and guide them through the research process. RAs are also given formal training in writing, data analysis, public speaking/presentation skills, conducting academic research, and formulating cogent research questions.

We are currently looking for highly qualified students or recent college graduates to serve as interns in our District Offices in Hagerstown and Gaithersburg, MD for the Spring 2018 term. Interns are an integral part of the team and are given substantial opportunities to learn and grow in a fast-paced and active office. Our interns work with us as full-fledged members of our staff, gaining experience in constituent outreach, casework, office management and research.
                                                                                                                                                                                 
I.                   Capabilities:
The ideal candidate will be professional, responsible, and friendly. They should be organized, eager to learn, able to work both individually and as part of a team, perform well under pressure, and adapt to rapidly changing situations.

II.                Qualifications:
a.       Basic computing knowledge
b.      Proficiency in Microsoft Windows 7
c.       Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
d.      Be able to complete Internet-based research on a variety of topics
e.       Some previous work experience is preferred
f.        Knowledge of voter or constituent databases a plus
g.       Good written and oral communication skills
h.      Commitment to public interest and government work
i.        A can-do attitude.

III.             Expectations and Compensation:
Preference will be given to applicants who can work a minimum of 20 hours per week and give a 10-week minimum commitment. Specific start and end dates as well as the weekly schedule are negotiable.

This is an UNPAID internship; however, academic credit can be arranged through participating institutions. The grassroots organizing and national-level advocacy experience is not to be missed.
