Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal
Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil
legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 133 independent,
non-profit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the
nation, and the U.S. territories. LSCs mission is to promote equal access to
justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance.
The primary objectives of the internship are
for the intern to: Understand the
relationship between legislative affairs and communications. Learn how to
develop accurate and rapid messages for different audiences.
They should have a good understanding of
social media and working knowledge of Microsoft Office projects (e.g., Word,
Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with Final Cut Pro X and content managing
systems (particularly Drupal) is a plus.
The primary objectives of the internship are
for the intern to:Understand the
relationship between legislative affairs and communications. Acquire a sound
understanding of how the federal appropriations process works.

Position: Government Relations and Public Affairs (GRPA)
– Communications Intern
Location: Office of Government Relations and Public Affairs
Employment Status: Temporary/Full-Time
The intern’s hours will be up to 37.5 hours per
week. The internship will run from June through August 2018.
The intern’s principle duties and
responsibilities include:
- Update and help improve website content;
- Draft news releases, media alerts, and other media materials;
- Track electronic and print media;
- Assist in the development and updating of media lists and other
databases;
- Monitor social media; and
- Other related duties as assigned, including, for those equipped to do so, assisting with video editing.
Position: Government Relations and Public Affairs
(GRPA) – Legislative Intern

The intern’s hours will be up to 37.5 hours per
week. The internship will run from June through August 2018.
The intern needs to have a working
knowledge of Microsoft Office projects (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
The intern’s principle duties and
responsibilities include:
- Respond to congressional inquiries;
- Track legislation and monitor congressional activity;
- Research and write materials for congressional staff and LSC publications;
- Update databases; and
- Other research projects as assigned.
Position: Office of Compliance &
Enforcement (OCE) Intern
Location: Office of Compliance & Enforcement
Employment Status: Temporary/Full-Time
The primary objectives of the
internship are for the interns to:
Acquire a sound understanding of the
importance of compliance oversight within the context of providing civil legal
services pursuant to LSC funding; Build an academic and professional portfolio
of work and writing samples; and Learn and implement effective
professional attitudes and behaviors.
The intern’s hours will be up to 37.5 hours
per week. The internship will run from June through August 2018.
He or she will have excellent research
and analytical skills, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be
attentive to details, have good organizational skills, and able to work both
independently and on a team. He or she also will exercise good judgment and be
an effective problem-solver, intellectually curious, and committed to LSC’s
mission to promote equal access to justice. A high degree of proficiency with
Microsoft Office Suite required.
The intern’s principal duties and
responsibilities include:
- Drafting
simple letters in response to information requests;
- Draft
memorandum based on review of relevant documents;
- Reading
reports and comments to assess if actions have been completed;
- Working with
simple excel spreadsheets;
- Conduct
internet-based research;
- Manage small
projects from inception to completion; and
- General administrative functions.
Position: Institutional Advancement Intern

Office of Institutional
Advancement
Employment Status: Temporary/Full-Time
The primary objectives of
the internship are for the intern to:Increase proficiency in specific fundraising disciplines;
such as finance management, grant research, marketing, and event coordination. Observe and participate in fundraising operations
and decision-making.
The intern's
hours will be 37.5 hours per week during the Summer. The internship will run from
June to August 2018.
The ideal
applicant will be dependable, self-motivated, professional, hard-working,
disciplined, and demonstrate integrity. He or she will have excellent research
and analytical skills, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be
attentive to details and organized, and able to work both independently and on
a team. He or she also will exercise good judgment and be an effective
problem-solver, intellectually curious, and committed to LSC's mission to
promote equal access to justice. A high degree of proficiency with Microsoft
Office Suite required. SalesForce background encouraged.
The intern's
principal duties and responsibilities include:
- Draft background memos on prospective donors
- Prepare and send acknowledgement letters and maintain records of LSC donations in Excel and Salesforce;
- Research and prepare summaries of new foundations
- Research project proposals
- Update sections of the website
- Research event venues and caterers
- Maintain guest and speaker list
- Work with key high-profile individuals in preparation for events, and when necessary staff major fundraising events
- Perform general administrative functions
These internships are paid an hourly rate based on undergraduate year. The range is $12.20-$15.20 per hour.
