Senator Coons' Washington D.C. Spring Internships - Applications Now Open

Washington, D.C. Legislative Program, Spring 2022:
The Office of Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) seeks interns for his office in Washington, DC for spring of 2022. Responsibilities include answering phones, sorting mail, handling requests for flags and tours, and assisting legislative staff in research. Internship positions are full or part time. This position requires outstanding organizational abilities, strong communication skills, attention to detail, poise, flexibility, and an ability to prioritize in an extremely fast-paced office. Motivated, hard-working, and professional applicants looking to get a taste of Capitol Hill are encouraged to apply.

Washington, D.C. Press Program, Spring 2022:
U.S. Senator Chris Coons’ Washington, D.C. office is seeking applicants for a full-time or part-time communications internship for Spring 2022. Tasks will include tracking media clips, editing video/photo/audio, drafting press releases, and assisting members of the communications team with a wide range of projects. Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students or recent graduates who can work at least 20 hours a week from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Prior internship experience in media, campaigns, or government is preferred.  Experience with digital communications – including work with graphics and photo and video editing – is also strongly preferred.
 
Our office offers paid internships to applicants with demonstrated financial need. Those who are interested in and eligible to receive a paid internship are required to submit additional application materials to help determine their financial need. Delaware ties are a plus.

Terps for Change

Program Details:

  • Terps for Change is a service-learning organization that allows students to engage in meaningful, longitudinal service with one of our 12 community partners. We hold weekly dialogues that give students the opportunity to explore and reflect on social issues that are impacting our community

  • The experience is free and in-person. With Virtual options if needed.  


Who should participate?:

  • Students who want to engage in weekly service and get involved in the community. 

  • Undergraduate students interested in getting involved in engaging discussions, education and reflection centered around social issues and community service-learning.


How will you benefit from participating?:

  • Connect with other students who have a passion for service-learning.

  • Develop and practice personal and group facilitation skills such as active listening, reflection, critical thinking, and communication. 

  • Learn how to effectively engage in constructive dialogue.

 

What should I expect?:

  • Students will volunteer 1-3 hours a week with one of our local community partners with a group of students

  • Participate in a 1-hour weekly dialogues around social issues.

  • Making connections between social issues and your academic, personal, and professional life.

Boren Scholarships

 Are you currently studying, or strongly interested in studying a language critical to US national interests? Are you strongly interested in US government service?


The Boren Scholarship offers undergraduates up to $20,000 for long-term (two semesters; one for STEM majors) study abroad focused on learning critical languages. US Citizenship is required. Campus deadline: January 20, 2022.


Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America (esp. for Portuguese), and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships may be used for study abroad in Summer 2022, Fall 2022, and/or Spring 2023.

Sustainable Micro-Internships Available, Dec & Jan

 UMD is working with Universitas 21 (U21) to offer a free online, international micro-internship opportunity for students around the world in December 2021 and/or January 2022. 

 

These two week micro-internships are thematically aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations.

Over the two-week program you will be presented with an ongoing sustainability challenge from your host employer and work in groups (spanning 18 counties and 19 time zones) to innovate a solution and how to communicate this with senior stakeholders. The internships involve two 2.5 hour live online sessions at the start and end of the two-week program, with the rest of the project work undertaken flexibly, online around your other commitments.

 

This unique experience is open to undergraduate and graduate students.

Congressman Wittman Spring Internship Opportunity

Republican Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) is seeking paid, in-person interns for the Spring 2022 session in his Capitol Hill office. The Spring session dates are 01/10/22 – 05/06/22, with flexibility on start and end dates to accommodate students’ schedules. Interns will have the opportunity to attend committee hearings and briefings for staff members, assist in the constituent correspondence process, as well as assist with other constituent services.

Duties & Responsibilities:

You’ll be working closely with our office to assist Congressman Wittman and his team. Your work could include but is not limited to:

    taking phone calls;

    processing constituent mail;

    and, performing other general office duties.


Ideal applicants should be interested in the legislative process, enthusiastic, reliable, and hard-working. To be eligible for our paid intern program, the applicant must be able to complete no less than a 24-hour work week. The internship schedule is flexible to accommodate classes. Public Citizen- Internship on Voting Rights

Democracy in the United States is under systematic attack – big money raised in secret undermines the voice of the people in our elections, voting rights are being undermined and the security of our elections is threatened. Join the Democracy Is For People team in mobilizing the power of the people to combat these threat and defend our democracy.


The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that corporations have a constitutional right to spend unlimited amounts of money to promote or defeat candidates for office.
Public Citizen has played a lead role in the effort to overturn Citizens United and is working on solutions to the problem of big money in politics locally too. We are looking for a few amazing interns to join us at ~20 hours per week during the spring and fall, and 20-40 hours a week during the summer.


You’ve heard that corporations have lobbyists. At Public Citizen, we’re the people’s lobbyists, representing the public in the halls of power. We fight for public health and safety, champion corporate and government accountability, and campaign for fair trade, clean energy, and consumer rights.


The Democracy Is For People Campaign has senior staff in our Washington, D.C.  and Syracuse, New York offices.


Responsibilities:

You’ll be working closely with our campaign organizers to build the campaign and help make it happen. Your work could include:

  • working with activists around the country, including locally and in key states, to get them involved in strategic campaigns;
  • develop issues and/or organizing expertise through dedicated assignments;
  • conduct social media and online outreach to build campaign visibility and assisting with press outreach and events;
  • reach out to potential partner organizations and officials to gain their endorsement and support;
  • research and write on current topics regarding money in politics and election security.

This is your chance to truly play an active role in making an impact in our nation’s history.

BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council- Government and Politics Student-Faculty Mixer

 



The BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council formally invites you to the Government and Politics student-faculty mixer on November 4th. This event will take place in Chincoteague Hall from 4-5:30 pm. The goal of this event is to foster connections between students and professors, allowing students to ask any questions about the program, graduate school, research, or career path options. Professor Spivey and Professor McCauley from the Government and Politics department will be in attendance. The first 20 students to sign up will receive a spot at the event. There will be two cohorts of students, one from 4-4:40 pm and one from 4:50-5:30 pm. Each student will have 20 minutes with each professor to ask questions, get to know them better, and talk about your future! Sign up here. Religious Studies at UMD: Approved Course List

 

Major in Religions and Cultures of the Ancient Middle East

The RAME major provides a more focused course of religious studies, while incorporating a course-structure specifically designed to help you complete your Gen Ed requirements. This 30-credit major is perfect as a stand-alone or part of a double major or double-degree program.

Foundation requirements:

One specially-designed Religious Studies I-series course (3 cr.)

Three lower-level courses in 2+ relevant traditions (9 cr.)

Electives (chosen with permission of RAME advisor):

One lower-level elective (3 cr.)

Four upper-level electives (12 cr.)

Capstone:

One specially-designed Religious Studies capstone seminar (3 cr.)

Minor in Religious Studies

 

The classic Religious Studies minor provides an opportunity to “travel the world” through the study religious phenomena in wide-ranging historical, geographical, and conceptual contexts. While valuable to anyone with an interest in religion, the religious studies minor especially supports students in STEM, business, journalism, and other fields, where focused exposure to a course of humanities enhances and diversifies the focused educational experience.

Foundation requirements:

RELS 271: “What is Religion?” (I-series, Hum, CC)

 Both courses incorporate the study of world religions with introductions to the discipline of religious studies and specialized approaches to religion. 

Electives:

Two lower-level electives from a pre-approved list or by approval of RELS advisor.

Three courses at the 300-level or above (same) 

Breadth:

RELS students demonstrate exposure to the diversity of religious traditions, in cultural, geographic, and/or temporal breadth. Approved by the Religious Studies adviser.
