Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with representations of queer and trans immigrants in the Americas! Students in this class will learn about the politics of LGBTQ+ representation in documentaries and short stories. You will have the opportunity to engage with guest speakers and scholars from Latin America. No language prerequisite. This is a Global Classrooms course. Please see information about summer funding from OIA below.
This course examines how queer and trans immigrants in the Americas are represented in contemporary literature and documentaries. We will watch documentaries and read novels and short stories written by and about queer and trans immigrants to analyze how stories about queer and trans immigrants are told. In this course, we will examine questions such as: How do the stories of queer and trans migrants in the Americas circulate? What are the structures of power animating their social and geographical displacement? Through texts and documentaries, we will examine the social and power structures that inform the movements of queer and trans immigrants and their narratives in the Americas. Moving Bodies thus focuses on both the body of cultural work produced by and about queer and trans displaced people and communities and to real bodies in movement.
