WGSS277: Careers in the Toy Industry: Gender, Trends, and Social Impact 
(Cross-listed with ARHU277)
1 credit; online (synchronous- Wednesdays from 4-4:50 pm on Zoom)

This class exposes students to diverse career options within the $114 billion global toy industry, and will explore the toy industry's relationships to gender and other areas of social impact. Students will learn how careers in play shape our society and about the countless careers in this fun, dynamic field for individuals with diverse, transferable skills. This class will share how emerging trends in content, technology, and approaches to identity and stereotypes shape the industry, its workforce, and its social impact. From Marketing, Accounting, Advocacy and Communications, to Design, Engineering, Law, Supply Chain and Entrepreneurship this is a constantly evolving industry that has the power to shape minds and our world through the power of play.




*The class will provide connections to employers for a possible Spring 2024 ARHU credit- bearing internship experience in the field as well as the opportunity to attend an optional field trip to the Annual Toy Fair in New York City. Please note: Students are eligible to get paid and earn academic credit for internships, as applicable!  Additionally, if a student is in a major that offers internship credit of their own that may also be an option for them.*

Coming soon: Maryland Fellows

Maryland Fellows is set to launch in Fall 2023! Maryland Fellows is a two-semester program, combining a Fall academic seminar (FGSM315/HNUH319T) with a spring internship, and a focus on public service. The brand new course is Civic Leadership and Human Services, to be taught by a delegate to the Maryland General Assembly. Spots are available and applications are rolling. As a reminder for ALL GVPT students, GVPT students are able to apply 6 experiential learning credits towards GVPT major requirements. GVPT considers experiential learning to consist of approved internship programs (GVPT377; Federal/Global/Maryland Fellows Fall courses [NOT including ENGL381/HONR368A]), GVPT research and independent studies (GVPT388), the GVPT Undergraduate TA program (GVPT386/389), Mock Trial (GVPT217 and 317), and Moot Court (GVPT439L, GVPT439M, and GVPT439N). Opportunities that put students beyond the six credit limit will be considered elective credit. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Hiring with Pride! Outreach Event

 

WHAT: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting its first-ever, national recruitment webinar in celebration of LGBTQIA+ communities. We will provide an overview of the federal hiring process, including finding and applying to federal jobs and building a federal resume. We’ll also provide insight to EPA’s Special Emphasis Communities and the incredible work that diverse employees do here at the agency.

 

WHEN: Wednesday, May 24th, 2023, 2:00 – 3:15 pm (Eastern), 11am-12:15 pm (Pacific)

 

WHO: Everyone is invited to learn about EPA jobs protecting human health and the environment. This event will feature spotlight speakers from the LGBTQIA+ community at EPA.
