Maryland Democratic Party Internship Program

As the 2016 Election cycle kicks into gear, a Maryland Democratic Party Summer Internship will be a valuable experience which will give students and recent graduates experience in electoral politics and the opportunity to learn about the state, the political process, and to meet many of Maryland’s elected leaders.

Internship Program
The Maryland Democratic Party Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, a unique opportunity to gain hands on experience in Maryland’s political process.

We are now accepting applications for Fall 2016 Maryland Democratic Party Internships. The internship will run from September 2016 to December 2016 with the potential for an extension. Internships will focus in several areas including fundraising, communications (social media), field activity, research, and political outreach. The internship will be based at our office in Annapolis.

Intern duties and responsibilities include:
Draft communications for general distribution
Manage data lists
Assist in event planning
Communicate with Democratic Party officials, offices and staff
Build relationships with Democratic affiliated organizations
General research
​General office support and organization

Requirements
An interest in politics, especially Maryland politics
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to commute to our office in Annapolis
Interns should be prepared to use their own laptop computers
Interns may be asked to attend events in Annapolis and around the state of Maryland

Schedule
Interns must commit to a minimum of ten hours per week during normal business hours
Schedules will be set with your direct MDP supervisor

Internship Opportunity with Congressman Tom Reed

The Washington D.C. office of Congressman Tom Reed is currently seeking full – or part – time interns for the Fall 2016 semester. 

Ideal candidates should be professional, dependable, and possess strong communication skills. 

Intern responsibilities include: answering phones, giving guided tours of the Capitol, constituent correspondence, attending hearing and briefings, and other legislative projects. 

Internships are unpaid, but are a great opportunity to gain professional and educational experience. Candidates must be willing to work in a fast-paced environment and be interested in learning more about the legislative process. New York ties are a plus, but not required.

Research Assistant Opportunity with Dr. Calvert Jones

Student research assistants (temporary). Fluent Arabic is required. The work offers an opportunity to obtain some research experience, especially in content analysis.  The student can perform the work required from any location with a computer and Internet access.

Job Description

Student workers who read Arabic fluently are needed to assist Dr. Calvert Jones in the Department of Government and Politics. The research assistant will review middle and high school workbooks written in Arabic, analyzing the content by looking for particular themes and translating the passages that match. The overall research project seeks to trace the changes in the way Arab youth in the United Arab Emirates learn about civics in their curricula. 

There are approximately 10 workbooks for the first phase of this research, each of which includes short lessons, images, and various types of student activities. The workbooks range from 50 to about 200 pages in length. Dr. Jones will provide a list of the themes to identify. 

The research assistants can review the workbooks in pdf format from any location using a personal computer, working flexible hours over the next few weeks until the reviews are completed. However, they should not multitask; any distractions can easily cause mistakes in which important passages that relate to the research are overlooked.  

Skills Required

Must be a fluent reader of Arabic.

Research Opportunity at CAPC

Looking for research experience?  The chance to work independently and collaboratively for course credit?

 The Center for American Politics and Citizenship, a research center that operates out of the Government and Politics Department is looking for smart, highly motivated, and dedicated students to join the Center as Research Assistants in the Fall 2016 Semester. Students will support the research of one member of the CAPC Faculty while also being trained in research methods, data collection, and presentation skills. RAs may also support Center activities such as event planning and outreach to the broader campus and beyond. 

All RAs receive credit based on the number of hours they work weekly. All class years are accepted and students do NOT have to be GVPT majors to apply.

Internship Opportunity with The Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence

The Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and organized intern to join our Organizing Department for the 2016 fall semester. Come be a part of major grassroots and political organizing efforts around the issue of gun violence prevention during this key moment of forward momentum. Interns will report to a Regional Organizing manager but will work closely with the entire Organizing staff on a number of projects. This is a great way to get hands-on experience coordinating grassroots actions, congressional press conferences, lobby days, and other similar events while driving the country towards major positive, political change.

Learning Opportunities:

•  Get first‐hand exposure organizing on any of Brady’s three major advocacy campaigns
• Understand the structure and strategies of various advocacy campaigns
• Work closely with survivors, victims, and activists from a wide variety of backgrounds
• Conduct research that is used to engage advocates into taking action
• Track policy changes, elections, and congressional movement on the issue of gun violence
• Learn voter outreach strategies and how to implement them
• Work with a range of team members to manage major events
• Be exposed to communications, legal and development teams while collaborating to support organizing initiatives

Qualifications:

• A strong dedication to advancing sensible gun legislation and to helping reduce the full spectrum of gun violence
• Flexibility and willingness to work in a dynamic environment
• Good time management and organizational skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Passion for working with affected community members to create change
• Proficiency with a variety of computer programs, namely Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Desire to be involved with the political process in a meaningful way
• Any previous experience in organizing, advocacy, campaigns or professional office environments are appreciated but not required

Internship Opportunity at the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) in Washington D.C. is now accepting applications for their internship program for the fall and winter of 2016. The Brad Rowse Policy Fellow internship program provides successful candidates with the opportunity to learn the importance of the public policy process on hunting, fishing and other conservation issues. Unlike any other hunting and angling conservation organization, CSF works directly with elected officials at the state, federal, and gubernatorial levels. The unique and collective force of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus (CSC), a bi-partisan group of nearly 300 U.S. Senators and Congressmen, the Governors Sportsmen's Caucus (GSC) with members from 34 different states, and the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses (NASC) with a collective membership of over 2,000 legislators from 48 states, working closely with CSF, and with the support of major hunting, recreational fishing and shooting, and trapping organizations, serves as an unprecedented network of pro-sportsmen elected officials that protects and advances the interests of America's hunters and anglers.

Intern duties include: 

• tracking state and federal legislation that impacts hunting, fishing, and other conservation activities and issues
• writing and assisting with the preparation of CSF’s email newsletters
• assisting with various CSF events
• researching policy issues and writing position papers

 Additional responsibilities will depend upon the ability and interest of each intern and the needs of the organization. CSF provides internship opportunities year-round and requires a minimum of a three month (12 week) commitment.

Representative Dennis A. Ross (R-FL-15) has openings for college students to participate in unpaid internships in his Washington, D.C., office. Successful candidates must have excellent organizational, personal, writing and communication skills. Florida ties are a plus, but are not required. 

Responsibilities include greeting visitors, conducting tours of the U.S. Capitol, filling flag requests, answering telephones, sorting mail, assisting staff in research and other general office duties.
