U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Energy Storage Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Energy Storage Internship Program offers 10-week, hands-on, practical summer internships at U.S. National Laboratories. Participants will conduct research related to the development of newer chemistries, battery designs, and manufacturing processes needed to usher in changes in energy storage. National Institute of Health (NIH) Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP)

Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world. Internships generally cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students arriving at the NIH in June. The NIH Institutes/Centers and the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) sponsor a wide range of summer activities including an orientation to help interns get off to a good start, Summer Lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, wellness activities, and Summer Poster Day. Spring 2022 COMM Courses Relevant to GVPT Majors

COMM428D: Principles and Practices of Democratic Talk

In this class, we consider whether public dialogue and deliberation are capable of solving some of the problems in our contemporary political system. We read theories of dialogue and deliberation, observe real-world examples of both, and then plan and host our own public events. By taking this class, students will develop a toolbox of resources and skills for facilitating public dialogue and deliberation.

COMM458E: How Citizens Communicate

Students in this class study how ordinary people participate in political communication. We focus on eight habits of democratic communication: trust, reciprocity, stranger sociability, public advocacy, deliberation, civility, empathy, and mutual aid. We study them in the public life of our very own College Park, Maryland, by observing meetings, interviewing residents, and examining urban design, and we develop proposals for interventions that would strengthen political communication in College Park. In this class, students develop skills including interviewing, observation, synthesis of data, and project planning.

Simon Wiesenthal Center Government Advocacy Internship

 The Simon Wiesenthal Center Government Advocacy Internship, entering its 7^th year, has now trained over 100 college age students on how to become effective advocates and activists on the critical issues that our community is facing. Wiesenthal Government Advocacy Interns will receive hands-on experience through internship placements in the offices of local & state legislators,  participate in weekly workshops with elected officials, top lobbyists, coalition builders, and will be partnered with mentors who shape front-line policy decisions.

 The program provides a $1,500 stipend and many program participants are able to get college credits as well.

The program has grown so much that they are now launching an alumni association bringing together the network of program graduates from each of the first six cohorts!
