Zero percent.
That was the percentage of second-graders that read at grade level last
year at one low-income school in Washington,
D.C. As that group of students moved into third grade in the fall of
2012, A Wider Circle formed a partnership with the school to make that
class the focus of our School Community Program. We work with children
in that classroom every day, and our goal is
clear: to bring the percentage of children who can read at grade level
from zero to 100%.
Third
grade is a critical year, marking the transition of a student
from learning to
read to reading to learn. Too often, students who test below proficiency
level in reading at the end of third grade fall further and further
behind in subsequent grades; this increases the likelihood for
behavioral problems and school dropout.
An internship in
this
new and ambitious program is a hands-on, meaningful, and challenging
opportunity for those interested in helping students to grow
and succeed.
