Department of Government and Politics Peer Advisor Announcement

The Undergraduate Advising Office within the Government and Politics Department (GVPT) is seeking three peer advisors for the Fall 2014 semester, with the possibility of continuing employment. This is a part time position for approximately 10-15 hours per week. The preferred start date is the last week of August 2014. 

Employment during Summer 2014 is also available. 

Responsibilities: 

The GVPT Peer Advisor's primary responsibility is to assist the Undergraduate Academic Advisors in the daily operation of the office. The Peer Advisor will answer questions regarding application to the major, registration procedures and deadlines, course selection, career development resources, internship opportunities, commencement, and will help ensure that students are academically successful within the department. Peer Advisors will be responsible for leading at least one academic planning workshop each week. They will also be responsible for updating the GVPT undergraduate student blog and GVPT Facebook page. 

Additional responsibilities include: answering general student e-mails, answering front desk phone, copying, filing, maintaining office supplies, helping inform discussions on academic policies, assisting with book orders, and other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • Registration as a GVPT major 
  • Experience working with students 
  • Advanced computer literacy, specifically experience with Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Experience and comfort giving oral presentations in a group setting

** Priority will be given to applicants with between 30 and 60 credits and who are available between the hours of 9am and 4pm. 

Compensation: 

This position starts at $10.00/hr.
