Internship Opportunities

 
Please see the descriptions below for more on a Graphic Design Intern or  information Risk Communication Training Project Intern. Graphic Design Internship
The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland is seeking a graphic design intern for Spring 2013.
 
The START graphic design intern will be part of the communications internship team and will report to the director of communications. Responsibilities will include:
•             Designing and implementing report templates
•             Designing and publishing brochures and marketing materials
•             Creating flyers and programs for events
•             Creating graphic images to accompany news stories
•             Some web design
•             Creating media kits
•             Assisting with strategic planning and implementation
•             Engaging in START’s educational enrichment program
 
Qualifications:
•             Junior or senior majoring in art, journalism, communication or a related field
•             Interest in design, branding and marketing
•             Ability to work independently
•             Experience in graphic design, with an excellent portfolio of work (class projects are acceptable as portfolio submissions)
•             Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (required), Adobe Creative Suite  (required)

Risk Communications training Project Internship
The Risk Communication Training Project involves the development, delivery, and evaluation of a program focused on training local leaders in the United States on effective risk communication practices related to homeland-security threats. We are currently seeking interns to assist with the development of the training modules, which include risk communication planning; analyzing and engaging your audience; exploring and understanding the phases of events; working within a changing media landscape; and risk communication evaluation. Tasks will include, but are not limited to:
•             Researching and/or developing audiovisual elements for trainings, such as videos
•             Drafting written training materials
•             Researching a location for piloting trainings
•             Utilizing the existing risk communication training inventory to pull out best practice examples
 
Qualifications:
•             Applicants must have an interest in training development
•             A record of academic achievement
•             Attention to detail
•             Familiarity with communication, specifically risk and crisis communication, is a plus
•             Ability to work independently
•             A strong interest in research
•             Applicants must have a minimum of 60 university credits
•             Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (required), Adobe Creative Suite a plus
