Advocacy internship
EMPLOYER: Public Citizen
POSITION TYPE: Internship (Fall or Spring Part-Time), Summer Internship, Winter/January Term Internship
LOCATION: Washington, District of Columbia
Congress Watch, a division of Public Citizen, is seeking new interns for the Spring 2014 academic session. We are also pre-accepting interns for the Summer and Fall 2014 sessions. Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with over 300,000 members and activists. The Congress Watch division engages in public education, grassroots organizing, and advocacy before Congress and administrative agencies on money in politics, open government, corporate accountability, financial regulation, health and safety, and access to justice.
The Congress Watch advocacy internship is designed to provide a better understanding of the role of public interest activism within the legislative and administrative process. The position is designed to give a broad experience influencing U.S. Congress and Administrative agencies as well as varied activities to build a background in public interest policy and advocacy work. Possible issue areas for internship placement are: civil justice, financial reform, good government, healthcare, regulatory policy, and worker safety.
Summer Intern
EMPLOYER: National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC)
POSITION TYPE: Summer Internship
LOCATION: College Park, Maryland
This program for undergraduate students aims to provide interns with opportunities to develop professional skills, to meet people working on environmental problems, and to deepen their understanding of socio-environmental issues. More specifically, interns will:
- Obtain an authentic research experience and contribute to their mentor research program.
- Enhance their understanding of the complex nature of socially relevant environmental problems and the research approaches used to address them.
- Enhance their understanding of how scientific evidence may be used to inform decision-making and policy with regard to environmental problems.
Assistant Canvass Director

EMPLOYER: Grassroots Campaigns
POSITION TYPE: Entry Level (Full-Time)
LOCATION: Nationwide, United States
Grassroots Campaigns is looking to interview top students to join our teams as Assistant Canvass Directors. There is no better time get involved and shape the next generation of activists that will take this country in a more progressive direction and see change on issues that matter now.
Job Responsibilities:
- Recruitment: Build a team of 15-50 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community. Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.
- Staff Management: Teach canvassing/fundraising skills. Work with your staff in individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders. Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.
- Canvassing: Canvass in the field for four days per week, to train new and experienced staff in the field and meet personal fundraising requirements.
- Administration: Carefully track income and expenses. Manage the budget for your office. Process staff payroll. Maintain records for future organizing efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential. Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and experience handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus, and may qualify candidates for additional leadership positions.
