U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO),
Custody Programs Division (CPD) is soliciting interns for the 2015 spring
academic semester.
CPD supports and
strengthens ERO’s immigration custody operations by providing objective policy
and program development, analysis, and monitoring that continuously improves
detention and effectively integrates the agency’s detention reform goals.
In particular,
CPD:
- Manages ERO’s community support release programs, which are partnerships between ICE and faith-based organizations in seven pilot sites, with the goal of testing whether providing access to holistic community-based services for eligible aliens mitigates flight risks, promotes compliance with immigration court orders, and supports individual well-being of participants;
- Serves as ERO’s Segregation Review Coordinator responsible for operationalizing the “Review of the Use of Segregation for ICE Detainees” Directive and managing the reporting review process for both ERO HQ and for users of segregation across all field offices;
- Leads ERO’s implementation of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) requirements and serves as the Prevention of Sexual Assault (PSA) Coordinator, overseeing the implementation and compliance of the Revised (Sexual Abuse and Assault Prevention and Intervention (SAAPI) Policy.
- Oversees programs and reform efforts that prioritize the health, safety, and welfare of those in immigration custody, including lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender individuals;
- Serves as the National ICE Parental Rights Coordinator, overseeing training to field leadership and external training about the Parental Interests Directive, communicating regularly with field points of contact for parental rights, and conducting case reviews involving parental factors; and
- Manages the agency’s Detention Reporting and Information Line (DRIL), a toll-free service that provides a direct channel for agency stakeholders to communicate directly with ERO to answer questions and resolve concerns.
CP has
opportunities for students interested in immigration, law enforcement,
corrections management, and/or homeland security to develop their skills and
enhance their career growth potential. The CP Internship Program invites
applications from candidates currently working towards a Master’s Degree in
Public Policy, Public or International Affairs, Public Administration,
Political Science, Governmental Studies, Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality,
and/or a Juris Doctor. Further, CP welcomes applications from exemplary
undergraduate students who have demonstrated an interest in immigration policy.

Applicants should possess excellent research, writing and editing skills. He or she should be a self-starter and be able to balance a shifting workload. Applicants should possess the capacity to synthesize, analyze, and communicate complex information, often under short deadlines. Experience working with teams and coordinating projects involving multiple organizations with varying missions and cultures is strongly desired. Background in immigration law and/or public policy will be useful.
Since this is an unpaid position, candidates should contact their school as to whether course credit can be obtained.
Requirements:
- Must being a United States citizen
- Be able to pass a background investigation; and
- Be able to commit 15 - 20 hours per week for 10-12 continuous weeks.
The timeframes
for the internship are:
- Spring 2015: Monday, January 26th to Friday, May 8th
- Summer 2015: Monday, June 1st to Friday, August 21st
