UMD Education Abroad Internship Opportunity

The University of Maryland’s Education Abroad office (EA) offers 2 semester-long internship opportunities for students who are interested in learning about the field of international education, gaining professional experience in the workplace, and participating in the internationalization of the University. Internships may be extended through the summer. All internships are unpaid.

Internship Positions:

Online Communications Internship
Expertise: social media strategies and online content development
This intern will report to the Applications Coordinator to support and improve EA’s social media presence. Projects may include:
  • Assisting with management and organization of EA social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Flickr
  • Carrying out social media initiatives aimed towards increasing EA’s presence on campus and attracting
  • UMD students of diverse backgrounds to study abroad
  • Researching social media tools and strategies that will help EA connect to students and stakeholders and creating action plans for implementation
  • Developing content for biweekly listserv
  • Documenting campus events and share photos, videos, and quotes from attendees on social media
  • Conceptualizing and proposing projects/ideas that advance EA’s mission and which are uniquely supported by the intern’s particular skills set/knowledge/interests.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Preferences: Strong oral and written communication skills, experience using social media platforms to represent a group or organization, engagement in campus groups and activities.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience living, working or studying abroad
  • Ability to devote 8 to 10 hours weekly
  • Junior, Senior or Graduate student


Diversity Initiatives Internship
Expertise: outreach and underrepresented students in study abroad.
This intern will work closely with an EA Advisor and the Assistant Director for Advising and Outreach on initiatives geared towards supporting students who are underrepresented in study abroad. At UMD this category includes but is not limited to racial and ethnic minorities, first generation college students, males and students with high financial need.
Projects may include:
  • Identify and correspond with student organizations to promote study abroad.
  • Represent Education Abroad at presentations and on student panels.
  • Help to organize the Welcome Back Dinner for minority student study abroad alumni.
  • Conceptualize and propose projects/ideas that advance EA’s mission and which are uniquely supported by the intern’s particular skills set/knowledge/interests.
  • Collect data about expectations and the decision-making process of underrepresented students regarding studying abroad. Other duties as assigned.


Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience living, working or studying abroad
  • Ability to devote 8 to 10 hours weekly
