NGO Internships

Internships in NGOs, or non-governmental organizations, focus on advancing the goals of either the United States or the international community in a single area. Interns work with NGOs to increase awareness and action by including elements of lobbying, congressional relations, and advocacy. Many organizations focus in a single area such as health, retirement planning, human rights, or poverty elimination.

American Association of Retired Persons (NGO, Non-profit)

AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with a membership of more than 37 million individuals. AARP helps people turn their goals and dreams into real possibilities, strengthens communities, and fights for the issues that matter most to families such as healthcare, employment security, and retirement planning.

Amnesty International, USA (Grassroots, Humanitarian, NGO)

Amnesty International is a global movement of people fighting injustice and promoting human rights. Currently the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization, Amnesty International investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public and helps to transform societies, and protects people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied. Although the organization is in more than 150 countries, Amnesty International USA is the largest country section with nearly 250,000 members.

CEJIL is one of the leading organizations working to protect and promote human rights in the Americas by using creative and comprehensive intervention strategies. CEJIL participates actively in a variety of forums involving multiple actors operating at many levels to achieve its objectives.

The Jewish Federations of North America is an American Jewish umbrella organization representing 153 Jewish Federations and 300 independent Jewish communities across North America. JFNA provides fundraising, organization assistance, and training to the Jewish Federations and communities throughout the United States and Canada.

National Conference of State Legislatures (NGO)

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) aims to help states be strong governing bodies by giving states the tools, information, and resources to help them create solutions to their problems. The NCSL is devoted to protecting state authority and providing a forum for states to form a strong, cohesive voice. Their legislative internship program gives interns the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge and build on their skills. The internship program provides first-hand experience in the legislative process. Positions are available in a variety of locations and for different term lengths.

National Education Association (NGO, Advocacy)

The National Education Association (NEA) is a nationwide education professional organization spanning all levels of education (pre-school to university). With a strong conviction in providing a great public school for every student, the NEA advocates for education professionals and a united force of public educators to help every student succeed. Interns can fill a variety of positions in the NEA. Internships may involve research, analysis, writing reports, meetings and policy forums, and interviews with governance and staff.

The American Red Cross provides compassionate care to those in need through donors, volunteers and employees who share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering.
