Non-profit Internships

Non-profit organizations are those that concentrate on giving value to the groups of people they serve, rather than evaluating success in terms of generating profit. Internships in one of these organizations can include elements of grassroots organizing, lobbying, outreach, policy, public content, and research. Interns can work for global or domestic organizations to help bring about change and development in particular focus areas.

Alliance for Retired Americans (Non-profit)

The Alliance for Retired Americans is a nationwide organization, founded in May 2001, with three million members working together to make their voices heard in the laws, policies, politics, and institutions that shape our lives. The primary objective of the Alliance for Retired Americans is to enroll and mobilize retired union members and other seniors and community activists into a nationwide grassroots movement advocating a progressive political and social agenda that respects work and strengthens families.

American Association of Retired Persons (NGO, Non-profit)

AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with a membership of more than 37 million individuals. AARP helps people turn their goals and dreams into real possibilities, strengthens communities, and fights for the issues that matter most to families such as healthcare, employment security, and retirement planning.

American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (Nonprofit, Advocacy)

The ACEEE is a nonprofit organization that seeks to advance energy efficiency policies and harness energy efficiency to increase the economic potential of the United States. They promote energy efficiency by conducting technical and policy analyses, advising policymakers, and working closely with businesses, government officials, and various organizations. ACEEE also conduct conferences and workshops for energy efficiency professionals and produces reports and other media outreach materials. Interns have done work in the field and planned events for the nonprofit.

American Enterprise Institute- Public Opinion Studies (Non-Profit, Research/Development)

The American Enterprise Institute is a community of scholars and supporters committed to expanding liberty, increasing individual opportunity and strengthening free enterprise. AEI pursues these unchanging ideals through independent thinking, open debate, reasoned argument, facts and the highest standards of research and exposition. American Forests (Non-profit)

American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the country. It has been advocate for the protection and expansion of America’s forests since its creation in 1990. Internships are available in communications and marketing, as well as policy and development.

Armed Forces Foundation (Non-profit)

Armed Forces Foundation offers assistance to active-duty and retired military personnel, National Guard, Reserve Components and military families. This includes direct financial assistance, therapeutic recreational and outreach programs, hospital dinners and national education initiatives.

Center for Civilians in Conflict (Non-profit)

This non-profit advocates for civilians before, during and after conflict in warring countries to ensure their needs are not ignored. The organization’s vision is for warring parties to recognize the importance of preventing civilian harm and upholding protections of civilians caught on the battlefield. Internships are available in their legal department, as well as communications and design.

Center for Responsive Politics (Non-profit)

The Center for Responsive Politics is the nation's leading research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy. Nonpartisan in nature, the organization aims to create a more educated voter, an involved public and a more transparent and responsive government. News reporting, research and advocacy are all areas in which the Center offers internships for interested students.

Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (Non-profit)

The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) is a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness about the needs of children without families and to remove policy barriers that hinder children from knowing the love and support a family provides. Each of CCAI’s programs brings together policymakers and individuals with direct foster care or adoption experience.

Dog Meets World: The Photo Diplomacy Project (Non-profit)

The Dog Meets World project is an effort to put photos in the hands of all children and families in need, often for the first time. The program uses volunteer photographers to take the stuffed animal “Foto” when traveling and print out pictures of the prop to give out.

Energy Future Coalition (Non-profit, Advocacy)

The Energy Future Coalition is a non-partisan, public policy initiative that seeks to stimulate the green economy and aims to build relationships with businesses and labor organizations with environmental groups for non-partisan, broad solutions. The coalition receives financial and strategic support from United Nations Foundation on environmental policy issues. In the past, interns have researched policies and provided administrative support.

Energy Action Coalition (Non-profit)

Energy Action Coalition is a coalition of 50 youth-led environmental and social justice groups working together to build the youth clean energy and climate movement. Working with hundreds of campus and youth groups, dozens of youth networks, and hundreds of thousands of young people, Energy Action Coalition and its partners have united a burgeoning movement behind winning local victories and coordinating on state, regional, and national levels in the United States and Canada.

The Equal Rights Center (Non-profit)

The Equal Rights Center (ERC) is a national non-profit civil-rights organization dedicated to promoting equal opportunity in housing, employment, and access to public accommodations and government services through education, research, testing, advocacy, and enforcement. Collaborating with national and local government agencies, for-profit corporations, non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, universities, and service organizations, the ERC advances civil-rights on behalf of its members across the United States.

The Fund for American Studies (Non-profit)

The Fund for American Studies is an educational non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. Humane Society of the United States (Non-profit)

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization. Since 1954 the Society has advocated for better laws to protect animals, conducted campaigns to reform industries and provided animal rescue and emergency response services. Internships are offered in many policy-focused areas such as legislative, regulatory and law.

The League of United Latin American Citizens’ mission is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States. Founded in 1929, LULAC is the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the US. LULAC offers internships in education policy, federal affairs, democracy, and health and nutrition.

No Labels is a growing citizens’ movement of Democrats, Republicans and Independents dedicated to promoting a new politics of problem solving.
