About the Meals On Wheels Association of America:This fall, the Association will host interns to add capacity and help fulfill our mission. All interns will be an integral part of the organization and will receive individualized attention and professional mentorship. They will be a part of the team during an important time of organizational growth and evolution and will have a hand in some of the major transition projects. All interns will meet bimonthly to discuss projects and share insights. At the end of the internship period, each intern will make a brief presentation to the entire staff of the Association about their experience and what they accomplished. Additional training and professional development opportunities will be made available throughout the internship.
The Meals On Wheels Association of America prides itself on having a vibrant and healthy culture that is both professional and fun. Interns will be able to participate in regular social activities with the staff as well as attend staff meetings and briefings.
Timing:
The internship will begin in Mid-Sept, all interns are expected to commit a minimum of 8 weeks to the Association. Business hours are 9am-5:30pm, Monday-Friday. The schedule will be flexible and will allow for time off as needed. The Association is accessible from the Blue and Yellow metro lines in the heart of Old Town, Alexandria.

Legislative Affairs Intern Description:
• Track legislation and gather information regarding the Appropriations process and Older Americans Act Reauthorization
• Attend Capitol Hill briefings with Staff
• Draft communications to members, stakeholders, and legislative offices
• Input data into databases and other tasks as needed
• Preferred majors/areas of study: political science, public policy, economics, nutrition, business
Public Policy and Research Intern:
• Perform research on topics relevant to senior nutrition programs across the country
• Synthesize knowledge on how senior nutrition programs participate in alternative food systems, particularly food hubs
• Synthesize knowledge on USDA senior nutrition programs, particularly Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program and Commodity Supplemental Food Program
• Perform other duties as necessary.
• Preferred areas of study: food studies/food systems, nutrition, agricultural/applied economics, public policy, social work, law
Membership Research Intern• analyze and summarize data from MOWAA Membership Surveys and Internal Grants Management documentation to describe programmatic and client-centered service trends
• identify areas for needed support and intervention and compile best practices from the membership
• Analysis of existing membership data and the design of data collection instruments to capture new needed qualitative information from member programs.
• Identification of compelling stories, best practices and trends for use in collaboration with the Leadership Team, and the Development, Communications and Advocacy Departments.
• Perform qualitative interviews with member program staff to ascertain and quantify recent changes in the operation of selected member programs and/or the impact of grants/funding opportunities programs have received over the past few years.

Preferred Skills:
• Open to both undergraduate and graduate students
• Studying or completed degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, or Social Sciences preferred
• Interest in and enthusiasm for nonprofit organizations
• Passion for the mission of Meals on Wheels
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products—particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Proficiency in database management
• Ability to work both independently and on a team
• Ability to work under pressure delivering a high degree of accuracy while meeting challenging deadlines.
