UW-Madison Political Science Department’s Second Annual Diversity Visiting Day

A call for students from under-represented backgrounds (especially students of color and first-generation college students) who have the potential for graduate study in political science:
UW-Madison Political Science department’s second annual diversity visiting day is on Friday, April 24, 2020. Visiting day is intended to increase the diversity of applicants to political science Ph.D. programs by reaching out to students in under-represented groups who might not otherwise consider graduate school. The intention is to reach out to students relatively earlier in their academic career (current juniors and perhaps seniors who have not yet applied to graduate school).

During the visiting day, students will participate in conversations with our faculty and graduate students about current political science research as well as about applying to graduate school, graduate school life, and post-graduate school career paths. They will focus especially on how to navigate academia and the support networks available to first-generation graduate students and students from underrepresented backgrounds.

This year’s visiting day will be on Friday, April 24, 2020. Participants will travel to Madison on Thursday and return on Saturday. All expenses related to transportation, housing, and dining will be covered. Interested students should send a cover letter, transcript (unofficial is fine), and a letter of recommendation to shelef@wisc.edu by February 15, 2020.

Please feel free to contact the above email if you have any questions.

Medicare for All Organizing Internship

Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than 500,000 members and supporters. We take on corporate power and seek to advance justice and democracy, health and equality. We have worked for a single-payer, Medicare for All system for our entire 47-year history, and are now scaling up our campaigning.  Our Medicare for All program is seeking new organizing interns for the Spring 2020 academic session.  We are also pre-accepting interns for the Summer 2020 session.

**We are accepting unpaid internships on a rolling basis and only accepting paid internship for Summer 2020**

Every day, Americans experience a health care system that doesn’t work, and they know it. People turned out en masse to protect the Medicaid expansion, and they did so around the broad idea that health care is right for all. Public support for a single-payer, Medicare for All system is surging, and politicians are paying attention. Now it’s time to seize the opportunity to drive forward the Medicare for All campaign, and to win.

The Medicare for All organizing internship is designed to provide a better understanding of the role of public interest activism within the federal and local legislative processes.  The position is expected to give a broad experience influencing U.S. Congress and local government bodies as well as varied activities to build a background in public interest policy and advocacy work. The Medicare for All intern will provide support to our Medicare For All Resolutions Campaign, which coordinates with activist leaders around the country to pass city and county resolutions as well as mobilizing activists in target congressional districts.

Qualifications:
  • The following skills and experience are desirable:
  • Basic knowledge of the legislative process at a federal level and an interest in local-level politics.
  • Basic knowledge of public health policy issues.
  • Willingness to assist with all aspects of organizing and advocacy work
  • Strong organizational, writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work at least 15 hours a week

To apply:
Public Citizen offers unpaid internships (course credit can be arranged) and a small number of paid internships ($15 an hour).  To be considered for a paid internship for Summer 2020, candidates must apply by March 13, 2020, and submit materials listed below.  Our summer internships are typically full time (40 hours a week for around eight weeks), although we have some flexibility as to hours and weeks.  Chosen applicants will be notified by Monday, April 6, 2020.

If you are applying for a paid internship, please include an essay outlining why you want to intern at Public Citizen and any other information about you that you wish to have considered, including your need for financial support (500 words or less). If you have completed the FAFSA, please also submit a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR).

Applicants should send a cover letter, resume and one or two writing samples to bshannahan@citizen.org with “internship application” and the time period for which you are applying in the subject line. Writing samples should be five pages or less and may cover any subject. No phone calls please. Public Citizen is an equal opportunity employer.
