Pre-Law Fellow: Full-time position for a May 2023 BA/BS graduate

Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking candidates to join its Pre-Law Fellows Program. This position is based out of the Washington, DC office.

The Pre-Law Fellow is a two-year position designed for recent college graduates, including upcoming May 2023 graduates, who are considering law school in future. The Pre-Law Fellows Program offers a unique, cross-functional look at the complete scope of law firm operations, providing real-world experience and professional development opportunities for anyone interested in a potential legal career.

Fellows gain a well-rounded experience through assisting lawyers and others by performing tasks in support of specific matters and practice groups, including both substantive work as well as research and business development and support of the firm’s business professional services. Responsibilities may include filing of documents with courts and agencies, monitoring of matter developments and dockets, coordinating document collections and productions, maintaining matter files, and other similar activities.

Sample Opportunities May Include

Pre-Law Fellows take part in enrichment programs created to provide broad exposure to the legal practice as well as prepare them for the law school application process.
  • “Lunch & Learns” with law firm partners, associates, and senior leadership
  • Participation in Summer Associate Program events as appropriate
  • Shadowing lawyers and/or paralegals in deposition, hearings, trials, closings, client meetings, and more
  • Invitations to professional development and training programs as appropriate
  • Participation in firmwide events, both virtual and in-person
  • Designated lawyer mentors
  • Resume workshops
  • “Demystifying the law school application process” panel
Responsibilities
  • Substantive responsibilities may differ based on practice group assignments and may include:
  • Work closely with assigned lawyers and paralegals, keeping them apprised of all approaching case deadlines and schedule changes
  • Gather and obtain records or other information from various sources including government agencies, libraries, legislative bodies, associations, and courts
  • Provide data entry support and maintenance on databases and spreadsheets
  • Organize and monitor ongoing and ad hoc responsibilities according to priorities and ensures that established schedules and deadlines are met
  • Provide overflow assistance to other project assistants and paralegals
  • Prepare and submit time entries on a daily basis, and other firm accounting documentation, as required, and in accordance with established Firm policy
Non-Essential Functions
  • Provide coverage when paralegals are unavailable
  • Handle special pro bono and client development projects
  • Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Four-year college degree required
  • Will also consider May 2023 college graduates available to start in Summer 2023
Success Factors
  • Attention to detail: avoid common and frequent mistakes; complete complex projects and tasks without error
  • Excellent computer skills: full facility with Microsoft Office and all other software packages that are part of the Firm’s core suite; accurate typing of at least 60 wpm
  • Excellent work ethic: ensures that all work is completed on a timely basis, maintains attendance and punctuality at a high level, available for work outside of normal business hours as needed
  • Interpersonal skills: ability to interact professionally with partners and staff at all levels of the organization as well as clients
  • Professionalism: exercises skill, sound judgment, and demonstrates competence in all aspects of the role including conduct, appearance, and demeanor
  • Impeccable communication and organizational skills: excellence in both written and oral communications whether in person, on the phone, or email; able to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines; able to organize self and work environment for efficiency and ready access to critical information

  • Available to work in the office 9:00 - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
  • Extra weekday and weekend hours may be required for special programs or events
  • Must be available to work beyond regular hours when necessary

  • Must be able to comply with all safety requirements in our workplace which may include provision of proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 and adherence to other safety protocols implemented
  • Must be willing to travel as required, on short or extremely limited notice, to various firm offices, courthouses, or other locations in support of the firm’s clients

The anticipated base salary for this position is $60,000. Center for a New American Security Remote Internships with Stipend

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is accepting applications for its Joseph S. Nye Internship program. Candidates may apply for research, communications or development internships. Research Interns work directly with specific programs including Regions and States (Middle East Security, Asia-Pacific Security, and Transatlantic Security); Energy, Economics, and Security; Military, Veterans, and Society; Technology and National Security; and Defense. Each internship is for six months. 

All interns are expected to work remotely until further notice.

Call for Student Papers: Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft

 The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft invites students to write a persuasive essay on the US military industrial complex. Strong essays will advance a clear perspective on the issue, supported by strong argumentation, knowledge of the subject matter, good writing, and originality. 

Open to students of any citizenship who are/will be attending institutions in the US in 2023 (both college students who will graduate in 2023 and high school seniors or others who currently plan to attend a US college at any point in 2023). 

First prize is $500, publication in Responsible Statecraft, and a Zoom call with Andrew Bacevich.

USDA Climate Change Fellows Program

The US Department of Agriculture’s Climate Change Fellows Program allows USDA to hire Climate Change Fellows through a time-limited appointment in the Excepted Service under “Schedule A” hiring authority. Current roles are with the Office of Energy and Environmental Policy and National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Initial appointments may be for up to 2-years (1-year extensions may be made; however, total appointment cannot exceed 4-years). The initial period for specific appointments will be determined based on expected duration of projects, exposure to diverse program areas, the nature of a developmental assignment, and/or the duration of assignments that meet workforce planning objectives.

Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute Fall 2023 Global Leaders program

 Undergraduates gain educational and hands-on experience with paid, semester-long internships. Students from around the US spend half a semester in the DC offices of a member of Congress followed by an assignment in a corporate partners’ government affairs office. All majors are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be enrolled at a 4-year college or university or recent college graduate, available to complete the entire program, and able to verify their identity/eligibility to work in the United States. Students also receive a monthly living stipend and housing on Capitol Hill.

April 18 Go Global Tour with Diversity Abroad

 
UMD has been named a stop on the Diversity Abroad Go Global Tour. Diversity Abroad aims to ensure students from diverse backgrounds are informed, have equal access to, and take advantage of the benefits and opportunities through international education opportunities.

This tour is an opportunity for Diversity Abroad to visit campuses across the country to not only highlight the personal and professional benefits of studying abroad, but to also inform students about the resources and scholarships that are available through Diversity Abroad to help students study abroad.

Both Diversity Abroad and Education Abroad will be around campus throughout the day on Tuesday, April 18th for raffles, presentations, and spaces to talk more about these invaluable scholarships, resources, and opportunities (schedule is subject to change):

APSIA Remote Summer Internship

APSIA, the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, seeks an International Communication and Marketing Intern for at least Summer 2023. Interns support APSIA's outreach and marketing efforts worldwide.

John Lewis Young Leaders Fellowship

The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights seeks John Lewis Young Leaders Fellows, a year-long capstone project for US-based undergraduates at select institutions. Fellows identify a social issue they are passionate about, then propose and implement a possible solution(s). 

Fellows receive a $2,000 stipend, $1,000 in funding for events and activities related to the completion of the project, access to resources from expert community organizers and activists, and a retreat in Summer of 2024, culminating the fellowship in San Juan, PR. 

Only accepting applications from undergraduates in the US at specific institutions. Fellows must be committed to social justice and willing to take action to dismantle systems of oppression and able to commit at a minimum of 10 hours a month to the completion of a capstone project.

Vital Voices Paid Summer Internship Application

Vital Voices Global Partnership is an international NGO dedicated to working with women throughout the world to provide the support and tools they need to have a positive impact in their communities. Remote and DC-based internships available in Development and Strategic Partnerships, Communications and Events, Issue Advocacy, Crisis Response, Leadership and Social Impact, and Global Network and Regional Engagement for the Voices Against Violence program. 

Internships require 20-40 hours per week. Payment of $1,000 per month for full time and $500 per month for part-time. Summer internships run from May 29-August 2023.

Feller Center Peer Mentor Application Open

The Peer Mentor Program is a component of the services the Feller Center Advising Center in BSOS offered to students. Through their service to fellow students, Peer Mentors gain valuable skills in public speaking/presentation, professionalism, and leadership. Peer Mentors primarily facilitate BSOS Graduation Planning Workshops each semester and conduct various presentations in BSOS UNIV100 classes. In preparation for these activities, all new Peer Mentors attend a mandatory class session once a week for their first semester as a Peer Mentor. All applicants are expected to serve for a minimum of two semesters. The program will be held in person once weekly.



Peer Mentors earn one graded academic credit after each successfully completed semester.

Eligibility Criteria:
• Must be a BSOS major
• Intent to return to the University in Fall 2022
• At least a 2.5 GPA
• Must be in good judicial/academic standing

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences offers students an opportunity to become involved in our college while earning two elective credits. This experience will teach you skills that will ultimately make you more marketable to employers and graduate programs. Additionally, being a BSOS Ambassador provides excellent leadership, public speaking, and teaching experience, as well as networking opportunities with faculty, staff, alumni, university administrators, and prospective students.

The required seminar course meets once a week, in-person on Thursdays from 4:00-4:50 pm. Students are required to complete three service events (1.5-3 hours each) over the course of the semester.

The Diverse International Women of Color Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad. DIWC will award $500 scholarships to select women of color who have been accepted to an in-person study abroad program.

Real Talk: Being Queer & Your Career

Join the UMD Community for a panel event and networking opportunity as we go beyond the surface of what it means to be an LGBTQ+ professional.

Panelists will engage in discussion around their experiences being out at work, including conversations around the benefits and limitations experienced by sharing identity in the workplace. Panelists will join us from a variety of settings, including higher education, STEM, consulting, and advocacy-based industries, among others. The second part of this program will also allow for panelists and participants to network and continue conversations around these important topics. Join Career Services professionals, LGBTQ+ professionals, students, and others in the UMD community as we address these important topics related to being out at work.

$3K Summer Stipend - Do Good Accelerator Fellows (Students)

Are you a current UMD student working on a social impact project?

 

If so, applications are now being accepted for the Summer '23 cohort of Do Good Accelerator Fellows.

 

The application deadline is April 9.

 

The Summer '23 Accelerator Fellows program consists of an 8 week program, designed to support students where it's most needed as you work to increase your community impact.

 

The Do Good Summer Fellows Program provides students:

  • Space to work and build your social impact project/venture
  • Resources including a $3,000 stipend
  • Opportunities to explore, test, and scale up project initiatives.

 

The ideal student for this program is one whose project is in the implementation phase. Summer Fellows are required to work at the Do Good Accelerator for a minimum of 8 hours and two days each week.

 

Important Dates:

  • April 9: Application closes
  • April 21: Fellows notified of program acceptance
  • June 5: Program begins
  • July 28: Program ends
