Freedom in the World Junior Fellowship

Freedom House seeks undergraduates for its nine-month Freedom in the World Junior Fellowship program. Freedom House is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that works to defend and expand freedom globally to help secure a world where all are free.

Each Junior Fellow will be hired as a fixed-term employee, eligible for a benefits package. They will be responsible for managing the research for one of the six geographic regions covered by the Freedom in the World report. In doing so, the Junior Fellows establish expertise on a specific region and can be called on to provide analysis of that region for internal use and potentially in response to media and other external queries. 

Applicants must be 2023 graduating seniors in an applicable field OR individuals who have completed their undergraduate degree between Fall 2022 and June 2023. Students who have begun or completed graduate studies are not eligible. 

No citizenship requirements, but must have authorization to work in the US independent from Freedom House sponsorship. 

Junior Fellows are highly encouraged to be based in New York or DC, but remote work is possible.

Key Into Public Service Scholarship

The Phi Beta Kappa Society invites applications for the Key into Public Service undergraduate scholarship program. The $5,000 award and educational conference connects promising arts and sciences students with opportunities in local, state, and federal government. 

They seek applications from well-rounded arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences students attending an institution that hosts a Phi Beta Kappa chapter who possess an overall GPA of 3.5+ with an anticipated graduation date of Fall/Winter 2023 through Spring 2025. 

Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is not required. 

Selected students are required to participate in an educational conference taking place in Washington, D.C. in late June 2023. It will highlight pathways into a variety of public service careers, provide a mentoring conversation matched to recipient interest, and offer other networking opportunities. Examples of panels from previous conferences include graduate school preparation, working in federal/state/local government, and how to network effectively as a public service professional.

APIA Scholarship

ABOUT THE APIA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

The APIA Scholarship is open to AANHPI undergraduate students attending any U.S. accredited university or college. Scholarship amounts range from $2,500 one-year awards to $20,000 multi-year awards. 

APIA Scholars has a special focus on supporting AANHPI students who live at or below the poverty line; are in the first generation of their family to attend college; are representative of the APIA community’s diversity, (geographically and ethnically}, especially those ethnicities that have been underrepresented on college campuses due to limited access and opportunity. Strong applicants would also have an emphasis on community service and leadership.

 

APIA SCHOLARS MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR 2023-2024 ACADEMIC YEAR:

  • Be able to describe your ethnicity, heritage, or ancestry in relation to the countries, territories, or lands in Asia or the Pacific Islands
  • Be a citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States. Citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau are also eligible to apply
  • Be enrolling or continuing as a degree-seeking undergraduate student in a U.S. accredited college or university in Fall 2023
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted), or equivalent, or have earned a GED
  • Must apply for federal financial aid for the 2023-2024 academic year using the Free Application for the Federal Student Aid (FASFA) by early April 2023

 

HOW TO APPLY:

The APIA Scholarship Program application must be completed online and submitted electronically once all the required questions have been answered. You do not have to complete the online application in one sitting. However, once an application is submitted, you are not able to edit it.

The application will be available for the 2023-2024 academic year from September 7, 2022, until January 19, 2023, at 5:00 PM Eastern.

The Recommender deadline is one week earlier: January 12, 2023, at 5PM Eastern.

Undergraduate Research Symposium on Europe and Eurasia

The University of Pittsburgh Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual event designed to provide undergraduates with advanced research experiences and opportunities to develop presentation skills. The symposium is on March 31, 2023.

The event is open to undergraduates from all majors and institutions who have written a research paper from a social science, humanities, or business perspective focusing on the study of Eastern, Western, or Central Europe, the European Union, Russia, or Central Eurasia. 

After the initial submission of papers, selected participants are grouped into panels. Participants then give 10- to 15-minute presentations based on their research to a panel of faculty, graduate students, and the public.

Two Letters of Recommendation: Secure two letters of recommendation from college administrators, professors, internship supervisors, or other individuals who can comment on their academic ability, leadership skills, and personal character. Letters should be sent to amulinge@theinstitute.net.

Essay: Discuss America’s greatest accomplishment and greatest failure since its founding. Essays should be no more than three pages, double-spaced. We do not expect these essays to be research papers — only expressions of your opinions.

Resume: Submit a resume detailing the extent of your campus involvement, volunteerism, and work experience. This allows us to better assess your leadership abilities.

Writing Samples: Submit two papers written in college-level courses. Writing samples should demonstrate the applicant’s ability to think critically. If possible, applicants should submit papers that bear a professor’s grade and remarks, but this is not required.

Photo: Provide a clear, recent headshot as a profile picture.

Official Transcript: Submit an official transcript sent directly from their campus registrars. Please have them send transcripts to amulinge@theinstitute.net.

Opportunity for Maryland Junior Interested in Politics and Public Policy

Applications are open for the Henry Clay Center’s fully funded, public-policy summer program – the College Student Congress! This two-week program in Lexington, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C. is an ideal academic and professional experience for current college juniors (rising seniors) interested in politics, public policy, law, and government.

As a reminder, the 13th annual College Student Congress will take place from May 15th to May 25th, 2023. Fifty-one students will be selected to attend - one student representing each state and the District of Columbia. Each student receives a full scholarship to cover the cost of attendance, including transportation, housing, meals, and program materials. Applications are available on our website - www.henryclaycenter.org.

Applications for BSOS Spring Undergraduate Experience Funds Opening Soon!

 If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an experiential learning opportunity, apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds. Applications will open in December 2022. 

Applications for unpaid spring 2023 semester experience will be considered on a rolling basis between January 9, 2023 and January 25, 2023 or until funds have been exhausted. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Submit a complete application (all questions answered) by the Best Consideration Date is January 9, 2023.
  • Have completed at least one semester (fall 2022 or earlier) at the University of Maryland.
  • Have at least one semester (spring 2023 or later) left as a student at the University of Maryland.
  • Be enrolled in a BSOS major or an ENSP, NEUR, or SDSC major track housed within the BSOS College.
  • Notifications will be sent on a rolling basis for those that apply by the "best consideration" date. Applicants who apply after the best consideration date can expect to receive a response the following Friday after application has been submitted. 
    All recipients will be asked to submit a Thank You video, which will be shared with the donor(s) of the fund you are receiving. Questions regarding BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds or the application process should be directed to bsos-scholarships@umd.edu.
  • Complete the learning experience for which you apply in spring 2023. If you choose not to complete the experience, you must notify the Selection Committee (bsos-scholarships@umd.edu) and the funds will be rescinded.

 

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to:

  • Travel/transportation expenses
  • Professional attire
  • Software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience. 
  • Conference fees
  • Opportunity costs, (i.e., the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship.)


Before submitting your application, make sure to review the eligibility criteria.

Additional Information:

  • Preference in selecting awardees will be given for activities where financial obstacles would likely prevent a student from participating.
  • Preference will be given for unpaid experiences in not-for-profit, government, or educational organizations, rather than in for-profit companies.
  • Preference will be given for NEW, rather than continuing, experiences (i.e., starting a new internship, as opposed to continuing in a position from a previous semester or summer).

  • Students may apply for funding for more than one learning experience per application cycle, but may only receive funding for one experience.

Spring 2023 Marcellus Policy Fellowship Opportunity

The John Quincy Adams Society has developed the Marcellus Policy Fellowship to help the next generation of U.S. foreign policy leaders follow in young JQA’s footsteps. By combining knowledge of foreign policy, the craft of effective policy writing, and the ability to publicize his ideas, Adams launched a career shaping U.S. statecraft. The Marcellus Policy Fellowship does the same, helping our fellows develop the ideas and skills necessary to guide American foreign policy in the twenty-first century.

Over the course of several months, Marcellus Policy Fellows wrestle with ideas that can animate a prudent, restrained foreign policy in line with our vision. They hone their writing skills under expert guidance, crafting a detailed policy paper and a related policy memorandum and op-ed. All this strengthens their candidacy for roles in an increasingly competitive foreign policy career space.

 

The Society selects 8-12 Fellows for each of two cohorts a year. The Fellowship is open to current graduate and undergraduate students, as well as those with 0-2 years of employment in the foreign policy space. The Fellowship is for those who are in, are pursuing, or intend to pursue in the near future a career shaping U.S. national security policy in fields like government service, the media, academia, think tanks, advocacy, and so forth. U.S. citizenship is not required. 


Fellows receive a $750 stipend. Sessions are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7-8 PM ET via Zoom.

PAID Summer 2023 Internship: Hudson Institute Political Studies

 


Hudson Institute Political Studies offers a fellowship in political theory and practice to outstanding undergraduates that will broaden and deepen their understanding of public policy and American political principles. It combines the rigorous study of politics and political thought in a seminar setting, with policy workshops led by think tank scholars and experienced government officials, and also a distinguished speaker series of exemplary figures from public life. 

OPEN TO: college students and recent graduates. All students participate free of charge, reside in complimentary housing in Washington, D.C., and receive a stipend of $3,000. The core of Hudson Institute Political Studies is a six-week summer program for undergraduates and recent graduates, based in Washington, D.C., and offered to roughly 54 students.

Roosevelt Network Fellowship Opportunities

The Roosevelt Network develops and supports undergraduate college students —in particular, those who hold identities historically denied political power—to be the next generation of leaders in the progressive policy ecosystem. The Roosevelt Network offers two Fellowship programs for rising juniors and seniors interested in policy.

The first round application deadline is December 18th. We are currently recruiting for two, stipended, fellowship programs: the Emerging Fellowship and the Roosevelt in Washington Fellowship. Student fellows receive a $3,000 stipend, policy and leadership training, and opportunities to explore policy aligned careers.


Below is a quick overview of the two programs:

Roosevelt in Washington (RIW) Fellowship 

Emerging Fellowship 

Transformational opportunity for undergraduate students in the last 1-2 years of their bachelors degree program to gain real world policy experience through placement in an 8-week (paid) summer internship in Washington, DC. RIW fellows will go through a 6 week bootcamp, focused on policy and leadership skills training, ahead of their summer internship experience. Fully funded housing and public transportation for the duration of the internship.

Academically rigorous policy research and writing opportunity for undergraduate students in the last 1-2 years of their bachelors degree program, where they will write a short policy brief to be published by the Roosevelt Institute. Emerging Fellows are paid and will be deeply supported in their research and policy writing, with opportunities for mentorship and exploration of graduate school pathways.

The European Union Center of California announces its 21th annual Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union. This is the oldest and largest academic conference in the United States dedicated to undergraduate research on European Union topics.

The primary purpose of this conference is to enhance undergraduate training in and knowledge of the European Union and US-European relations. In addition, the aim of the conference is to allow students with expertise in different areas to interact with each other as well as with faculty, foster inter-campus cooperation, and recognize the excellent work achieved by students. 

This conference is hosted by the European Union Center of California, Scripps College.

Topics and Paper Format

Students may pursue a wide range of topics that reflect their interest, expertise, and past research. Topics may deal with any aspect of European integration or transatlantic relations. Papers can be about the EU, a particular country within the EU, or the EU’s relationship with outside countries. Final papers should be approximately 10-15 pages double-spaced (not including references). Papers should not exceed 25 pages. Papers should be submitted using APA format (including tables, charts, figures, references, footnotes, and section titles).


Conference Format

Students will present and discuss their research in a panel format, each panel being composed of three to five student papers. Each presentation will last about 10-15 minutes followed by questions and a discussion moderated by a faculty member. The conference will include a keynote address. At the conclusion of the conference, faculty participants will nominate and select the best papers of the conference. Selected papers will be published in a special volume of conference proceedings.


Conference Journal

The Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference Journal on the European Union is an open access journal and compiles outstanding research papers by undergraduate students presented at the Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union. Typically 8-12 of the best papers are selected for publication by participating faculty discussants and the EU Center staff. Previous publications can be viewed via the digital version at http://scholarship.claremont.edu/urceu/.


Awards

In addition to publication in the Conference Journal, the EU Center of California is pleased to offer special travel & study awards for the top two papers and/or presentations. 


Conference Fees and Travel Expenses

There is no registration fee to attend the conference. The EU Center of California will also cover hotel room for 2 nights and conference meals for accepted participants. Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel.

Are you an undergraduate student planning a career in International Affairs? Do you receive need-based financial aid?

If so, you should learn about the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program for students with strong interests in pursuing careers in international affairs. The program provides undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers.

This all-expenses-paid program takes place at Howard University from June 12 to July 21, 2023. The program includes courses (with transferable credit), a full range of extracurricular activities and career-development support, travel, a stipend, and room & board!

Program Preferences: The Rangel program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service; the program has a strong focus on students who receive need-based financial aid (demonstrated by FAFSA).

Eligibility: Rangel is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and requires U.S. citizenship. Rangel requires a GPA minimum of 3.2.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

 Fulbright UK Summer Institutes for Freshmen and Sophomores (U.S. citizens)


The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for U.S. citizens to study in the United Kingdom (UK). These expenses-paid summer programs provide the opportunity for U.S. undergraduates (U.S. citizens, aged over 18, see eligibility details below), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to participate in a three or four week academic and cultural summer program.


Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.


Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens;
  • have a GPA of 3.7 or higher
  • be 18 or older; 
  • be a second or first year student, and/or have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute finishes;
  • cannot have spent more than 4 weeks outside the U.S. in the last 5 years. Exceptions are made for refugees and/or students from a different cultural background who have spent time abroad due to family emergencies.
Please note: First-generation college students and students who receive or are eligible for need-based aid are encouraged to apply. 

The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs. This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance.

The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights Leadership Program (CRLP) is a free three-day academy designed to provide training and insight to emerging leaders by fostering a comprehensive and supportive educational environment wherein program participants will engage with experienced Civil Rights leaders, scholars, and practitioners in order to learn more about career paths and opportunities in the field.

Undergraduate Research Day - April 26, 2023 - Save the Date!

Undergraduate Research Day (URD), Maryland’s largest, most visible and diversified showcase for undergraduate research accomplishments will take place on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm, with registration and set up opening at 11:30 am. URD will once again take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union.

 

Presentation proposals may be submitted beginning Wednesday, February 1, 2023 through the MCUR website. More information will be available on the MCUR website beginning January 23, 2023.
