Saint James Way/Santiago De Compostela Study Abroad Spring Break 2025

ARHU's Department of Spanish and Portuguese is offering an experiential learning opportunity to study abroad in Spain next Spring Break 2025.

In this 3 credits course, students engage in a hands-on learning experience and reflection connecting the knowledge learned in the classroom as they walk the last 101 km of the Camino de Santiago/Saint James Way. 

This course is taught in English. The Program is accepting applications until September 23rd. 

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers Scholarships for this program. The scholarship is open to ALL majors and minors (no exceptions).

Now Recruiting Students for Service-Learning Experiences!

 Join us for Alternative Breaks Experiences this Year!


Program Details:

  • Alternative Breaks (AB) are week-long service-learning immersion experiences during the university's Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks that address social issues in local, national, and international communities. Students can lead or participate in the experiences, and there are mentoring opportunities for faculty & staff!

  • The Alternative Breaks Experience looks to build a world in which UMD students are empowered learners in community together, taking action toward just causes.

  • Interested students must be willing to commit 1.5 hours/week for 5 weeks leading up to the experience 

  • Experiences are typically $100 - $200, however there are opportunities for fundraising and scholarships


Who should participate?:

  • Any student that wants to explore community development, civic engagement, local issues, leadership, and service.

  • Undergraduate and graduate students interested in exploring social issues that include environmental conservations, education, socioeconomic inequality, healthcare, and more. 


How will you benefit from participating?:

  • Connect with a community of peers from across campus and create new friendships. 

  • Develop and practice personal and group leadership skills such as active listening, reflection, critical thinking, and communication. 

  • Learn how to best engage and serve communities.


What should I expect?

  • Engage in short-term service-learning immersion experiences that address social issues in local, national, and international communities.

  • Learning and discovering root causes about different social issues through service 

  • Active engagement in personal reflection, listening, small group dialogue, and small group activities.

  • Thought-provoking questions and dialogue around social issues.

  • Making connections between social issues and your academic, personal, professional, or civic life.

  • Identifying at least one action step to take towards a social issue you are passionate about.

Terrapin Leadership Institute Registration Open Now

 The Terrapin Leadership Institute (TLI) is a five week-long student-led leadership development program tasked to guide students across campus—through hands-on activities and critical dialogue—in discovering who they are as leaders and becoming confident with tangible leadership skills and strategies that can be applied to their everyday lives. The workshop is a low-commitment, high intensity series that is meant to accommodate the student's busy schedule. There is no cost to participate in TLI! United Nations Association of the National Capital Area Spring Internship Opportunities

The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) has several internships to be filled for the Spring Semester:

These internships will be for 20-32 hours/week, Monday through Thursday to start in the next few weeks until at least mid-May. Spring Internship with National Security Network

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated exclusively to promoting pluralism, defending democratic values, and fighting the ideologies that threaten democracy. 

The National Security Network is seeking a full-time or part-time intern with an interest in national security, US foreign policy, the US-Israel relationship, and professional development. Interns will have the opportunity to attend exclusive high-level NSN events and roundtable discussions, as well as network with FDD experts and rising mid-career national security practitioners. 

Responsibilities

  • Assisting on a wide array of research initiatives including current U.S. national security trends, and current events and national security challenges in Israel
  • Drafting remarks for FDD experts
  • Helping plan national security trips to Israel
  • Coordinating event logistics and staffing NSN events
  • Assisting with program management for NSN programs
  • Assisting with research initiatives including current U.S. national security trends and current events/national security challenges in Israel
  • Miscellaneous market research projects

 

Skills

  • Strong organizational skills and should be able to juggle many different projects simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive problem solvers with a keen attention to detail
  • Knowledge of US national security and current events in Israel and the region
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Excel 
  • Smartsheet experience is a plus 

 

*Please note that applicants must be available to attend and assist with several evening NSN events. The NSN Intern will be expected to work in FDD's office at least twice a week.

 

Eligibility

  • Must have at least a 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Should have a relevant course of study and have completed coursework in any of the following fields: International Relations, Security Studies, History, Communications, Journalism, International Economics, Political Science. Computer science, and/or a relevant STEM field of study.
  • Interns should have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, as well as basic Excel skills.
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 22 hours per week.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Spring Congressional Relations Internship for Foundation for Defense of Democracies

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated exclusively to promoting pluralism, defending democratic values, and fighting the ideologies that threaten democracy.

FDD Action is seeking full-time and part-time Congressional Relations interns. FDD Action advocates for effective policies to strengthen U.S. national security. Interns will work closely with FDD Action staff to conduct research on a number of our congressional projects. Interns will cover congressional hearings; do background research on issues being considered by Congress, and other legislative research projects pertaining to timely national security issues. In your cover letter, please share a particular national security issue of interest to you and thoughts you have about this issue. FDD Action is looking for interns with broad research experience and an interest in the legislative branch. While internship experience on Capitol Hill is a plus, the skills and network acquired during this internship will help those seeking opportunities on Capitol Hill in the future. Internship includes career guidance throughout the semester.

New ECON Class for Spring 2024: Economics of Poverty and Discrimination

 The ECON department recently added a new course to the spring that might be of interest to GVPT students! Open to all majors, ECON375: Economics of Poverty and Discrimination, will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-10:45am. The prerequisite classes are ECON200 and ECON201.

Government Affairs Fellow Internship with Mines Advisory Group

Position Title: Government Affairs Fellow

Reporting to: Government Affairs Deputy Director

Location: Washington, DC

Duration:  3 months

Compensation: $3,000 stipend (prorated, $1,000 per month)

About MAG/MAG U.S.:

Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is an international humanitarian nongovernmental organization and joint winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, with a mission to save lives and build safer futures by clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance from countries that have experienced conflict. We are the leading implementing partner of humanitarian mine action programs for the U.S. State Department, also working with USAID, the Department of Defense, and many other global donors. Our vision is a safe future for men, women, and children affected by conflict and insecurity. 


About the role:

MAG U.S. is looking to hire an intern to support its policy and advocacy work and is seeking candidates looking to gain experience in government affairs for international development nonprofits. This position is based in our Washington, DC office, which is currently operating on a hybrid remote and in person schedule. Ability to work in-person at our Washington, DC office two days per week is preferred. Timing and hours of the internship are flexible, with a strong preference for availability in March and April. Stipend is prorated for the length of the internship, to be paid in $1,000 installments at the beginning of each full month worked. Metro transit costs are also covered. Supervisor will also provide necessary support for academic credit, if requested.

The Government Affairs Fellow will support engagement with U.S. policymakers, particularly Congress, in order to inform, update, and educate policymakers on MAG and the broader impact of the Department of State’s office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA), and the US Army’s Humanitarian Demining Research and Development (HDR&D) program. This will likely include:


  • Supporting direct engagement with policymakers, mostly in Congress
  • Producing internal and external communications about MAG’s programs and developments in the sector
  • Conducting research on Congress, politics, and legislation
  • Supporting outreach efforts to other policy audiences, such as think tanks.


What we’re looking for:

·       Deep commitment to MAG’s vision, mission, and values, and the ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.

·       Interest or experience in Congress and government relations.

·       Interest or experience in policy research.

·       Interest or experience in advocacy writing/communications.

·       Interest or experience in foreign affairs and/or international development.

·       Ability to work independently.

·       Strong writing skills.

·       Strong academic background in related field (International Relations, Political Science, Regional Studies, Public Policy).

·       Experience with Microsoft Office tools (specifically Word and Excel).
