Maryland Summer Scholars Program - Deadline February 4, 2014

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  For the summer of 2014, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 30 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

 Who can apply: You are eligible to apply if you will have completed at least two full semesters (and 30 credits) by the end of Spring semester 2014, if you have a GPA of at least 3.4 at the time of application, and if you will be enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, in Fall 2015. All academic majors are eligible.

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2014 awards will be Tuesday, February 4, 2014. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

EW Scripps Political Sales Office Looking for Competitive Spending Analyst

EW Scripps to fill the position of Competitive Spending Analyst for the 2014 election cycle. This is a full-time paid position with benefits beginning in April 2014 with an end date of November 2014.
 
They are looking for an organized individual to collect and distribute campaign spending information for the political campaigns in their 14 television markets.  The Washington D.C. office manages the sales efforts for all of our 14 Scripps stations.

This is an important position on the Scripps team and can be handled by someone that’s organized and knows how to manage spreadsheets. This position also requires a lot of phone and e-mail communication so excellent communication skills are needed.

This would be a good opportunity for Political Science majors.

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients

Are you thinking about studying abroad in SUMMER 2014, FALL 2014, or for the 2014-15 ACADEMIC YEAR?  

Are you a US CITIZEN receiving a PELL GRANT (a federal need-based educational grant)? 

Then you should learn about the GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP, which provides up to $5000 for study abroad for students with financial need who receive Pell Grants. In the past two years 70 Maryland students have won Gilman Scholarships!

Eligibility Requirements: US Citizens - Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors - All Majors - Must be studying abroad for at least 4 weeks (UMD winter term courses are not eligible) - Must have FAFSA demonstrated financial need and be receiving a Pell Grant.  

Application Deadline: March 4, 2014 - this is the deadline to apply for scholarships for study abroad programs beginning between July 15 and October 15, 2014.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers 1,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 to students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies world-wide. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Programs must be at least 4 weeks in length. 
 
Students are also eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program if their study abroad plans involve studying any of the following critical languages: Arabic (all dialects), Chinese (all dialects), Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Persian, Languages of India and Pakistan, Indonesian, Russian and Swahili.

Udall Scholarship in Environmental Issues

Learn about the Udall Scholarship in Environmental Issues, a program that seeks to identify future environmental leaders in fields including public policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation regularly awards 80 scholarships and 50 honorable mentions on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior level college students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment. Udall Scholars take part in a four-day Orientation in Tucson, Arizona where they meet with other Scholars, elected officials and environmental leaders. Scholars also gain access to a network of environmental policy professionals through the Udall Alumni listserv. 

Because contributions to the environment can be made in many different ways, Udall Scholars represent a broad range of academic majors and career interests. Recent Udall Scholars have majored in environmental sciences and policy studies, agriculture, political science, natural resource management, sociology, anthropology, American Indian studies, tribal public policy, history, English, theater, landscape architecture, and public health, to name just a few areas. 

Award Amount: The Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses. Udall Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, or other specifically approved expenses.

Duration: The Udall Scholarship provides one year of support. Sophomores who receive a Udall Scholarship are eligible to reapply for a second year of support.

Population Connection's Capitol Hills Days Conference

Population Connection is the largest grassroots organization focusing on population stabilization in the United States. Their main programs include: educating young people about unsustainable population growth through K-12 lesson plans that reach 3 million students a year, informing constituents across the country about their congressional representatives' stances on population growth and family planning, and working directly with Congress and the White House to inform family planning policy and funding levels. Population Connection works to ensure that every woman around the world who wants to delay or end childbearing has access to the health services and contraceptive supplies she needs in order to do so.

Population Connection is currently extending invitations to their annual advocacy conference Capitol Hill Days which will take place Friday, April 4th - Tuesday, April 8th at the Fairfax at Embassy Row Hotel in Washington D.C. This weekend consists of informational sessions and interactive advocacy training focused on the pressing need for U.S. investment in international family planning, leading up to lobby visits on Capitol Hill.

Press The President Political Writing Scholarship Competition

Press the President, an online collaborative blog, has announced its inaugural collegiate writing scholarship competition. Organizers and Judges hope to encourage young writers to get involved in political issues important to them.  

“This will be the first in a series of various writing competitions that Press the President will host for university students,” said Founder of Press the President. “The site has been growing in both authorship and readership and we expect it to continue expanding with this scholarship opportunity. We also recently started allowing authors to share video blogs on the website, bringing a face and a spoken voice to politically active individuals in the United States.”  

Contest guidelines: 

·         Students attending a college or university at the associate, bachelor, master, or doctorate degree level are eligible to participate.
·         The submission deadline is December 31st. The length of submissions is between 500 and 800 words. 
·         The submission form will require an “.edu” email and all finalists will be vetted to ensure they are currently enrolled at a college or university.
·         A panel of professors and journalists at colleges all over the country will judge the incoming submissions.  

Prizes: 

·         The top three winning entries will receive a $500, $250, and $125 scholarship for their efforts. Students can submit articles here 

Press the President has two accomplished judges who will select the winning articles for the university student writing contest. Caryl Cooper, a current advertising professor at the University of Alabama, and award-winning journalist Scott Sobel will judge submitted articles.

Articles will be judged on:  

·         How well they are written.
·         The ability of the author to persuade the reader.
·         Journalistic integrity of the article to include important information. 

“New media is providing numerous opportunities for writers young and old to express themselves more quickly and directly with public figures such as the US president than ever before,” stated Scott Sobel, judge for the writing competition. “We are encouraging future leaders among our young college-age writers to jump into the fray and give voice to important issues.” 

Press the President is a worldwide forum for unfiltered debate about U.S. issues affecting the globe. The site’s founders want to create a space where writers could express their opinions freely.

Summer Fellowships and Advanced Institutes at the Tikvah Center in NYC


Are you between the ages of 20 and 30 and interested in Jewish thought and Jewish affairs? Consider applying for a Summer Fellowship at the Tikvah Center in New York City!

The Tikvah Summer Fellowship offers participants the opportunity to study with some the world’s greatest teachers of Jewish texts and ideas. Topics will range from timeless human questions, to the fundamental nature of Judaism, to the challenges faced by Judaism and Israel in the modern era.  Fellows will live for two weeks in New York City with an international cohort of young scholars – a mix of Israelis, Americans, and Europeans. This program is a successor to Tikvah’s programs in “Jewish Thought and Enduring Human Questions” at Princeton University and to Tikvah’s programs in “Zionism and Statesmanship” at Hebrew University and Ein Prat Academy in Israel.

All housing costs are covered, and participants will receive a $1,000 stipend upon completion of all program requirements. Travel support is provided for Israeli and international participants.

American Chemical Society Government Relations Intern

The Government Relations group in the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) at the American Chemical Society is seeking a part-time (up to 20 hours/week) or full-time (up to 40 hours/week) undergraduate or graduate student intern for the Spring of 2014. The intern will work in the ACS headquarters office located in downtown Washington, DC. The exact dates of the internship period and working schedule are negotiable.  Please note this internship is unpaid. 

The American Chemical Society and its more than 164,000 member scientists and engineers represent the “human scientific capital” that drives the scientific advances and innovation that have made America the world leader it is today. 

The ACS Office of Public Affairs consists of the Government Relations and Communications groups. The Governments Relations staff work with Congress, the Administration, and other industry, scientific, and education-related organizations to develop a cohesive, national innovation strategy to increase science and engineering talent and maintain America’s lead at the cutting edge of science and innovation across disciplines and sectors. In addition to working with Government Relations staff, if interested, the intern would have a chance to work with staff in the Communications group, helping to promote the ACS as one of the world’s premier scientific organizations. 

Responsibilities:
  • Perform legislative research and tracking at the state and federal levels.
  • Assist in drafting issue papers and work on a variety of writing tasks.
  • Attend Congressional hearings and other briefings.
  • Conduct in-depth research on science, education, energy, and national security issues.
  • Work on science and general grassroots messaging.
  • Provide assistance to staff on other projects, such as aid in the organization of congressional briefings and legislative fly ins.
  • More significant responsibilities possible depending upon individual skills and interest.
 Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for advancing science.
  • Background and interest in public policy and the legislative process is preferred. Background in chemistry or the physical sciences is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong writing and communication skills and ability to interface with large numbers of people and organizations.
  • The intern will need to be able to write in a clear manner and interact with Office of Public Affairs partners in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently after being given initial instructions.

DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship 2014 - Deadline: January 31, 2014

Are you a SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR thinking about studying abroad in Germany next year – in fall 2014 or spring 2015 or for the academic year?
 

Learn about the DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship, which provides a monthly stipend of € 650 (approximately $897) for one to two semesters (four to ten months) to help you meet the costs of studying in Germany. Over the last two years UMD students received this award!

Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study abroad in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either for students taking part in an organized study abroad program or for those planning an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year. The National Scholarships Office – scholarships@umd.edu – provides advice and support to DAAD Scholarship applicants.

New Spring 2014 GVPT Course: GVPT 449K Politics Through Popular Fiction and Short Stories

New course for Spring, 2014: "Politics Through Popular Fiction and Short Stories"

Idea of the Course
In one way or another, all the books and short stories in this course are all about outsiders.  Some are outsiders by choice, most not.  Each is an outsider in a different way. Pecola, the protagonist of Toni Morrison’s "The Bluest Eye," a young black girl finally driven mad, only wants blue eyes. Ben, of Doris Lessing’s "Ben in the World" (a work of science fiction) only wants to find somewhere he belongs. Gregor Samsa, in Kafka's short story "The Metamorphosis," wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a giant cockroach.

Job Responsibilities:·       Recruitment:  Build a team of 15-50 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community.  Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.·       Staff Management:  Teach canvassing/fundraising skills.  Work with your staff in individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders.  Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.·       Canvassing:  Canvass in the field for four days per week, to train new and experienced staff in the field and meet personal fundraising requirements.·       Administration:  Carefully track income and expenses.  Manage the budget for your office.  Process staff payroll.  Maintain records for future organizing efforts. 

Qualifications:Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential.  Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and experience handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus, and may qualify candidates for additional leadership positions. 

Training:Newly hired directors will typically spend three weeks doing field training, working intensely alongside experienced directors and will also attend week-long national classroom training.  Additionally, directors receive support from regional management staff throughout their time on staff.  After one year in the position, staff will have learned the basics of running a successful grassroots campaign, including, but not limited to, fundraising and donor recruitment, hiring and supervising staff and/or volunteers, and turf management. Expectations:Initial commitment of working through August 2015.  Campaign hours can run 60-80 hours per week, including work on weekends.  

Salary/Benefits:Annual salary for Assistant Canvass Directors begins at $24,000.   Staff may opt into our health care plan (PPO).  Paid training, vacation and sick days are included; student loan assistance is available.

The BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC) was formed in the fall of 2002 and is charged with advising the Dean on various topics affecting students and their educational and social experiences at the University of Maryland. 
DSAC is developing systems to help the College strengthen its sense of community, and is creating better relationships with each academic department in hopes of being able to better address the issues and concerns of students. Each year, DSAC holds the highly successful Student-Faculty Dinner to connect students and faculty outside the classroom and foster professional relationships. This year, the Council is focusing on increasing students' access to internship experiences and undergraduate research opportunities, gathering additional feedback on courses, improving the advising system, and acting as a resource for students to voice their concerns.
DSAC consists of representatives from each department in the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, the living/learning programs in the College, and the Student Government Association and University Senate representatives for the college.

NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS OFFICE – 2403 Marie Mount Hall – State Department Foreign Service Scholarships

Are you aiming at a career in International Affairs, Diplomacy, or Development? The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. 

The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program encourages applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in international affairs careers and those with financial need.The National Scholarships Office provides support and advice to students interested in learning more, and applying to the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program. Description: The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is designed to provide students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. The Program encourages the involvement of African American and other minority group students. Students who take part in the Program are referred to as Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Scholars (Rangel Scholars). This program takes place at Howard University in Washington DC for six weeks beginning in mid-June. It includes academic courses and additional seminars and visits to give students exposure to key policymakers and practitioners of international affairs.

Academics: During this program, students receive intensive instruction in three courses: Political Economy, History of U.S. Foreign Relations and Writing. Nine semester hours of academic credit may be awarded. 

Outside Activities: To enhance their understanding of the conduct of U.S. foreign policy and international career options, Program participants meet with Executive Branch policymakers, Members of Congress, representatives of non-governmental organizations, foreign government officials and other individuals involved in international relations. In recent years, participants have visited the State Department, Capitol Hill, the Central Intelligence Agency, the World Bank, the United Nations, the Pentagon and the National Foreign Affairs Training Center. 

Award Amount: Students who are accepted receive tuition, travel, room and board, as well as a $3,200 stipend for the program.

Mike Fitzpatrick, PA Congressman- Internship

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08) is seeking enthusiastic and hard-working interns for the 2014 Spring Semester in his Washington, DC office. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about the inner-workings of Congress and the legislative process. The internship program is unpaid and opened to college students, law students, and recent graduates. Crofton law firm- Internship

Crofton law firm seeks legal interns for the Spring 2014 semester to assist in the daily operations of the firm and learn about the practice of law.  Interns will have the opportunity to attend court hearings, depositions, and client meetings and gain insight into the practice of law at a litigation firm that is in court on a regular basis. Duties will include collecting evidence, organizing files, communicating with clients and other substantive work. Intern will work under the direct supervision of a personal injury attorney and will learn personal injury litigation from initial intake to trial or settlement.

Facebook Public Policy Externship - Summer 2014!

Facebook is seeking dynamic and highly organized, motivated, and detail‐oriented undergraduate and graduate students to join our Public Policy team in Washington, D.C. as full-time contracted externs. The Facebook DC office helps to inform users, the media, partners, employees and other stakeholders about Facebook's products and business. Working with policymakers at the international, federal, and state levels, the team handles legislative and regulatory matters, participates in domestic and international policy discussions and leads the company’s interactions with consumer and other non‐governmental organizations. Alongside Facebook team members responsible for public policy and strategic communications, externs will work on a variety of projects and policy issues with relevance in the U.S. and around the world, ranging from legislative monitoring and policy analysis to content development. Please note that this is a full-time, contract position for the Summer term and is based in our Washington D.C. office.

Responsibilities

• Support Facebook's public policy and communications activities.
• Monitor and analyze legislation, regulation, and policies related to the company.
• Draft policy related materials including briefings and talking points.

• Support outreach to Government, Congress, non‐profit organizations, and other entities.

Requirements

• Pursuing a degree in business, law, political science, public policy, international relations,
communications, journalism, or equivalent.
• Ability to commit a minimum of 30 hours per week in our Washington D.C. office.
• Previous internship or professional experience in policy, research, or communications preferred.
• Demonstrated interest in politics, public policy, and technology.
• Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to think, plan, and execute resourcefully.
• Experience in the Internet technology industry a plus.
• Passion for Facebook and online communication a must!
