 Rapidly improve your Arabic, Persian or Korean at the UMD Summer Language Institute! This 9 week program provides a full year's worth of language instruction in a single summer. The program will run from June 3rd to August 2nd, 2024.

Final Call - Boren Scholarships for Critical Langauges

Are you currently studying, or strongly interested in studying a language critical to US national interests? Are you strongly interested in US government service?


The Boren Scholarship offers undergraduates up to $25,000 for long-term (two semesters; one for STEM majors) study abroad focused on learning critical languages. US Citizenship is required, All classes including seniors are eligible. Campus deadline: January 24, 2024.

Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America (esp. for Portuguese), and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships may be used for study abroad in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Spring 2024. In addition to the option of selecting your own study abroad program in these regions, you can also apply for one of the Boren programs Flagship Language Initiative sites:


African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive language study through domestic and overseas language programs in French, Swahili, Akan/Twi, Wolof, or Zulu. 

South Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SAFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive study of either Hindi or Urdu through a combination of domestic and overseas programs. 

Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SEAFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive study of either Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese through a combination of domestic and overseas programs. 

Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive study of the Turkish language through a combination of domestic and overseas programs.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is a fellowship which annually provides 75 American and 75 German young professionals between the ages of 18½–24 the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s countries studying, interning, and living with hosts. 

Prior German language knowledge is not required. Participants are expected to represent the diversity of the US in factors including, but not limited to, career field, educational background, geographic location, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, race, religion and socio-economic status. US or German citizenship required.

State Department Consular Fellows Program

The Consular Fellows Program enables US citizens to use their language proficiency in Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese as part of a unique national service program working in US embassies and consulates abroad. 

It is a limited time, non-career appointment of up to five years which directly supports the US State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs’ mission to provide overseas consular services that protect US citizens, ensure US national security, facilitate the entry of legitimate travelers, and foster economic growth at home. US Citizens.

EHLS Scholarship Program for Native Speakers of Critical Languages

Native speakers of critical languages are in high demand in the US government. EHLS trains candidates to be effective communicators and strong candidates for federal jobs. All EHLS participants receive a full scholarship from the National Security Education Program that includes tuition and a living stipend.

 Applicants must be US Citizens who are native speakers of Arabic, Azerbaijani, Balochi, Bambara, Dari, Hausa, Hindi, Kazakh, Korean, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Mandarin Chinese, Pashto, Persian Farsi, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Tajik, Tamashek, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Uzbek, or Vietnamese with English language skills at level 2 or higher on the ILR scale. Recipients must agree to fulfill a one-year service commitment with the US government.

Summer Language Institute Summer 2023 Applications Open

 The Summer Language Institute in Arabic, Persian, and Korean at UMD is currently accepting applications for Summer 2023. This is an intensive language learning program which helps students improve their language skills, offering the equivalent of one years worth of language study in Arabic, Persian, or Korean over the course of a single summer. The program also offers scholarships to help interested students attend and study their language of choice. This would be a great opportunity for any Government & Politics students who might be considering studying a language.

Qualifications

  • For undergraduates – must be a Junior or Senior to be eligible to apply – or graduates.
  • Major in French Studies, Communication, International Relations, Educational Affairs, Political Science, or related field of study
  • Excellent English writing skills – must be native-level
  • French language proficiency B2 or above on the CEFR scale
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public-speaking skills
  • IT skills: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), mastery of major social media platforms, familiarity with Canva and similar sites is a plus
  • Interest in educational affairs and French culture

Availability

  • 12 hours per week maximum, 4 months (negotiable)
  • Starting date: March 15th, 2023
  • Internship is based at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C., 4101 Reservoir Road NW 20007.

Critical Language Scholarship - Virtual Learning for Arabic, Chinese, and Russian

 CLS Spark is a pilot initiative providing funded virtual opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. Participants will spend an academic year learning either Arabic, Chinese or Russian through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers at a host institution abroad.

A program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program and CLS Spark are part of a U.S. government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity.

The CLS Spark program will be offered in academic year 2022 - 2023 with approximately 18 hours of virtual language instruction offered per month, as well as monthly cultural activities.

Applications are due Thursday, May 26, 2022 by 8:00pm EST.

The CLS Program will host frequent webinars, Q&A sessions, and alumni panels for students and advisors throughout the open application period. A registration link is available on our website at: https://clscholarship.org/events

CLS Spark Key Benefits:
  • Full scholarship covers all instruction and a $300 stipend
  • Online language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences over the course of two eleven-week terms
  • Language gains certified with the widely recognized ACTFL OPI test
  • Automatic consideration as CLS Program semifinalists for the summer overseas 2023 CLS Program to continue their language study
CLS Spark is open to any American undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited U.S.-based degree-granting program. Preference will be given to veterans of the U.S. armed forces, and to applicants from states or institutions historically underrepresented in study abroad or in the CLS Program. 

Instruction will be provided by faculty and staff at host institutions located abroad in countries where these languages are commonly spoken. With inclusive support provided by CLS Program staff, students will improve their command of all four modalities in these languages (listening, speaking, reading, writing), participate in cultural activities once a month, and make connections with members of the host country’s community and their peers across the U.S.

The NVTC (nvtc.gov) provides critical linguistic support to the United States Intelligence Community and other federal agencies. We provide a variety of translation services and our language needs are diverse. Join us for a virtual information session that will focus on opportunities for students from the Arabic, Persian, Chinese & Russian programs. In the session, we'll discuss the various career options the NVTC is offering to UMD students and alumni.
