Big Ten Policy Simulation: AI Shield for Kids Act

Students from across the Big Ten are invited to participate in a virtual policy simulation, with the opportunity to play the role of a senator working to move a bill out of committee. The bill, S. 1626 (IS) - AI Shield for Kids Act, would make it mandatory for companies to not include artificial intelligence features in their products targeted at minors without the consent of a parent or guardian. The simulation will be led by faculty from the Ford School of Public Affairs at the University of Michigan, UMD’s lead co-partner in the Big Ten Collaboration: Democracy in the 21st Century.

This event, open to graduate students and undergraduates of all majors, is for anyone who’s curious about how policies are created and wants to have a say in shaping the future. Worried you won’t understand policy language? Unclear about a policy simulation? Don’t be! This is a learning experience for everyone, and democracy thrives when diverse backgrounds participate. Previous Big Ten policy simulations have focused on the Democracy Restoration Act, by Maryland Senator Cardin, and the Vote At Home Act, by Minnesota Senator Klobuchar.

Students who complete the policy simulation will receive a digital badge that recognizes their participation and skills developed in this learning experience. They also become eligible to participate as mentors with their Big Ten peers in future in-person policy simulations.
