Undergraduate Research Opportunity

ARE YOU AN UNDERGRADUATE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR FALL 2023 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND? 


The Maryland Student Researchers (MSR) program maintains a University-wide database where UMD researchers post research opportunities for undergraduate students. Over 200 projects are available this Fall 2023 with more being added so check back regularly over the next several weeks.

To view a recorded presentation on getting started in undergraduate research, and using our database of opportunities, you can request access to our ELMS resource site for undergraduate research. To gain access click here to complete a brief questionnaire.

 

The research opportunities posted on the MSR website typically call for students to spend around six hours a week working under the direction of a faculty mentor on that faculty member’s own research. Many positions are for volunteers, some are paid.

 

ELIGIBILITY: Any student in good academic standing may apply directly for any listed opportunities for which they have the listed required skills.  It is open to undergraduates of all majors and disciplines with an interest in research. Many positions are offered on a volunteer basis, and selection of undergraduate researchers is made solely by the faculty members who provide the listed opportunities.

Fall 2023 Sadat Chair Student Office Assistant Position


The Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development is accepting applications for an
undergraduate student office assistant for the Fall 2023 semester. This is a paid position at
$15.50/hour

We are looking for an undergraduate student office assistant with excellent writing
and oral communication skills, strong attention to detail, research experience, and a background
assisting with event logistics. Applicants with a knowledge of SPSS, Microsoft Office Suite, and
Adobe Acrobat preferred. Student office assistants work on a multitude of tasks that aid the
Sadat Chair Program Coordinator, such as event set up, researching current events, and proofing
documents.

and a cover letter that includes your general hours of availability. In addition, please list the
names, titles, relationships and contact information of two references.

Application will be accepted until 5:00pm Friday, September 15th. Applicants who are
considered will be contacted for an in-person interview.

ODK applications are now open!



Omicron Delta Kappa – one of the most prestigious national societies to recognize leadership is now accepting applications for the Fall 2023 semester. ODK brings together junior, senior, and graduate students with our most outstanding faculty and staff members, to recognize campus leaders and to encourage other students to achieve.

Omicron Delta Kappa requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.650 for juniors (60-89 credits), 3.700 for seniors (90+ credits), and 3.800 for graduate students to be considered for membership. 

Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society applications are now available. Eligible junior, senior, and graduate students should visit www.odk.umd.edu to begin the application process. 

Membership applications must be received electronically no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2023

Apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Are you applying to STEM/social/behavioral sciences PhD programs this Fall 2023? Or will you be a 1st or 2nd year grad student in these fields in Fall 2023?


You should apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP)!


The NSF GRFP provides 3 years of full support for PhD studies, with an annual stipend of $37,000, in science, math, engineering, and social/behavioral science fieldsUS Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible. You can visit the NSF informational website here


The UMD National Scholarships Office has an in-depth ELMS resource site for UMD NSF GRFP applicants, with recorded presentations (described below) and supporting materials to help you prepare a competitive application. Current UMD undergraduates at all levels, UMD alumni, and UMD grad students who will be in their 1st year of PhD studies in Fall 2023 are invited to join our ELMS resource site. Rising 2nd year PhD students are also eligible IF they did not apply in Fall 2022.

Recorded NSF Info Session #1 - Introduction: This session will introduce you to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship program: what it is, who it's for, application components, how it's judged, and how you can prepare to apply effectively - whether you're applying this fall or in a few years.


Recorded NSF Info Session #2 - Writing the Essays: This session will discuss the two required essays - an intellectual/personal statement, and a mini research proposal. We'll cover what information needs to be in the essays, as well as strategies for writing them in a timely and effective way.


Eligibility: You must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident to apply for the NSF graduate research fellowship. You must be applying to, or enrolled in your 1st or 2nd year of graduate studies in an NSF supported field in Fall 2023. Compass Advocacy 2024 Session Internship

Compass Government Relations Partners is a lobbying and advocacy firm in downtown Annapolis. We represent clients before all levels of government, specializing in Maryland and Delaware. Our team tackles a wide range of issues including renewable energy, education, tax policy, health care, and the state budget.


 Scope of Work:
- Research legislation and relevant topics
- Hearing coverage
- Monitor floor sessions
- Testimony submission
- Schedule meetings between lobbyists, clients, and legislators
- Basic clerical duties including answering phones, maintaining spreadsheets, etc.
- Invitation/one-pager distributions to General Assembly offices
- Greet and provide hospitality to clients and visitors

Compensation: Interns will receive a bi-weekly stipend as well as a completion bonus.

State Department Consular Fellows Program

The Consular Fellows Program enables US citizens to use their language proficiency in Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese as part of a unique national service program working in US embassies and consulates abroad. 

It is a limited time, non-career appointment of up to five years which directly supports the US State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs’ mission to provide overseas consular services that protect US citizens, ensure US national security, facilitate the entry of legitimate travelers, and foster economic growth at home. US Citizens.

Marcellus Policy Fellowship

The John Quincy Adams Society developed the Marcellus Policy Fellowship to help the next generation of US leaders develop the ideas and skills necessary to guide US foreign policy in the twenty-first century. Fellows hone their writing skills under expert guidance, crafting a detailed policy paper and a related policy memorandum and op-ed. 

The Fellowship is open to current undergraduates, as well as those with 0-2 years of employment in the foreign policy space (Internships do not count against the two-year limit). US citizenship is not required. Fellows receive a $750 stipend

APSIA Remote Communications Internship with Stipend

APSIA (Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs) invites students to apply for our Fall 2023 remote internship. Interns gain practical experience in multicultural, multinational marketing and build connections to top schools of international affairs.

Consider WGSS 250 Introduction to WGSS: Art and Culture
 
Interrogating the categories of gender, sexuality, race, class, ability, the course will provide students with an examination of how artists have responded to pressing social justice issues of their eras. While the course centers visual art, students will also engage genres such as music, plays, literature, digital and performance art as arenas of social change. 
 
This course counts towards both DSHU and DVUP Gen-Ed. requirements!

Lecture is Monday & Wednesday 10:00am - 10:50am
