Do you have a passion for politics and policy? Ever wonder what it’s like to intern on the Hill? Join the Feller Center for a panel discussion featuring students and alumni who’ve interned on Capitol Hill. Topics include: tips for landing an internship on the Hill, learn about the day-to-day work experiences, how they juggled coursework and their internship, what they liked and what they learned. Open to all UMD students, but the event will be especially helpful for BSOS majors.

BSOS EVENT NEXT WEEK - Restorative Justice Panel

“Building a Restorative Campus” Panel | Tuesday, November 14th from 5pm-7pm


The Dean’s Student Advisory Council in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, in conjunction with the Justice & Legal Thought Scholars Program and MLAW Programs, is hosting an event focused around Restorative Justice (RJ) education. Our other campus partners include BSOS, TerrapinSTRONG, BSU-UMD Social Justice Alliance, and Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA).


The event will feature two guest experts in RJ, Josh Bacon and Debra Budiani-Saberi, who will engage in an open discussion about RJ practices in classroom settings, across campus, and beyond. It will take place next Tuesday, November 14th, 5-7PM, in the Atrium located in STAMP. We will also have food available for attendees. All students, staff, and faculty members are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Attend this panel to learn from and network with alumni in the legal field. Panelists will include lawyers as well as professionals with careers that do not require a JD. The event will begin with a moderated question and answer session and conclude with an opportunity to talk with the professionals individually. The event is open to all current UMD students.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work at Nasdaq?

Nasdaq is an online global marketplace for buying and trading securities—the world's first electronic exchange. Brandon Tepper, a BSOS alum, will host a small group of students on site to share his insights on the organization and his career lessons! Attendees will also hear career tips from professionals working in the field of business, finance, communication, technology and/or marketing. This visit is open to all undergraduate UMD students and UMD faculty/staff. Transportation is not included. Students who will be in the New York area on June 6th are encouraged to register.

Join the UMD Community for a panel event and networking opportunity as we go beyond the surface of what it means to be an LGBTQ+ professional.

Panelists will engage in discussion around their experiences being out at work, including conversations around the benefits and limitations experienced by sharing identity in the workplace. Panelists will join us from a variety of settings, including higher education, STEM, consulting, and advocacy-based industries, among others. The second part of this program will also allow for panelists and participants to network and continue conversations around these important topics. Join Career Services professionals, LGBTQ+ professionals, students, and others in the UMD community as we address these important topics related to being out at work.

Celebrating Women in US National Security Careers Panel

The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) invite undergraduates, faculty, and staff to a special session for Women's History Month Celebrating Women in US National Security Career on Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 2:00 - 3:45pm ET. 

The panel will feature representatives of the US National Security Council and the conversation will include one segment with more senior officials and one with more junior officials. Undergraduates from any institution are welcome.

GIC Conference - Ohio State University

 The Department of Political Science at The Ohio State University is pleased to announce its annual Graduate Immersion Conference (GIC) , which will take place on April 6-7, 2023. The GIC provides students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in a graduate career in Political Science with a professional yet low-pressure academic setting to discuss their research (either completed or in progress). Recruited scholars will participate in panels and receive constructive feedback from faculty and graduate discussants. Students will also receive advice on applying to PhD programs and have the chance to speak with our PhD students about life in graduate school. Participants will be flown out to our campus in Columbus, Ohio and will receive a fee waiver for the next OSU PhD application cycle. Undergraduate students of all backgrounds pursuing a degree in political science, international relations, economics, or a related discipline are eligible to apply. Feel free to distribute this email, along with the attached flyer, to your students and colleagues. 

Applications are due Wednesday March 1st, 2023 by midnight. We request the following application materials:
(1) completion of the brief online application form
(2) a transcript (an unofficial copy is accepted)
(3) Curriculum Vitae 
(3) title and abstract of the research paper (limit 500 words)
(4) Interest statement (limit 500 words)
(4) a letter of recommendation from a student’s faculty sponsor or advisor (the letter may be submitted separately via email to graduateimmersionconference.osu@gmail.com).

Sarah Ahmed, ANTH ‘19 | Research Analyst, Westat

With a strong commitment to public service and advocacy, she has experience working in international development, policy, and social science research. Previously, she worked as a Gender and Markets intern at the United Nations Foundation, as well as several NGOs and think tanks. As a Rangel fellow, she intends to join the U.S. Foreign Service as a Public Diplomacy officer. Sarah graduated from the University of Maryland in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and a minor in Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation. She speaks Urdu and English and plans to attend Georgetown University for her graduate studies.

Our alumni want to hear from our students!  This will be an engaging session, and we encourage students to ask questions throughout. CIA’s Directorate of Support and the Director’s Area will host an interactive exercise tailored for students who want to learn how they can apply their backgrounds and problem-solving skills to national security issues.

Students interested in participating in the simulation must commit to the full experience and thus be able to be present for the full 2 hours. Space is limited.
