Big Ten Policy Simulation: AI Shield for Kids Act

Students from across the Big Ten are invited to participate in a virtual policy simulation, with the opportunity to play the role of a senator working to move a bill out of committee. The bill, S. 1626 (IS) - AI Shield for Kids Act, would make it mandatory for companies to not include artificial intelligence features in their products targeted at minors without the consent of a parent or guardian. The simulation will be led by faculty from the Ford School of Public Affairs at the University of Michigan, UMD’s lead co-partner in the Big Ten Collaboration: Democracy in the 21st Century.

This event, open to graduate students and undergraduates of all majors, is for anyone who’s curious about how policies are created and wants to have a say in shaping the future. Worried you won’t understand policy language? Unclear about a policy simulation? Don’t be! This is a learning experience for everyone, and democracy thrives when diverse backgrounds participate. Previous Big Ten policy simulations have focused on the Democracy Restoration Act, by Maryland Senator Cardin, and the Vote At Home Act, by Minnesota Senator Klobuchar.

Students who complete the policy simulation will receive a digital badge that recognizes their participation and skills developed in this learning experience. They also become eligible to participate as mentors with their Big Ten peers in future in-person policy simulations.

TurnUp Civic and Activism Remote Internship Opening

TurnUp is a non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to increasing youth civic education, empowerment, and activism, featured in Forbes as the 2022 standout non-profit organization. The program's format is tailored to accommodate the ever fluctuating commitments and responsibilities of a student's lifestyle, our program is fully remote, has rolling admission, encourages campus engagement, and has a flexible time frame and schedule. All students have access to grow into more capable and responsible citizens and to develop their professional skills for a successful future.

Please visit this link for a detailed description of our program, and the website for more information.

Students join remote teams that are energized by mission-driven, diverse students from around the country who work on amplifying youth civic engagement and learn about responsible activism on many social justice issues. Along with our unique curriculum, peer to peer learning and expert speakers deepen their experience. Most colleges have counted student's hours for college course credit and our program has been invaluable for bolstering resumes, widening networking reach, and for earning letters of recommendation.

We would like to invite students at University of Maryland to apply. The application link is
here.

If you have further questions, please feel free to sign up to join an information session here. If none of these times are convenient for you, please reach out to schedule a 1:1 meeting. We would be honored to be placed on your list of recommended internship opportunities.
