Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients/US Citizens

Are you an undergraduate student, Pell Grant recipient, and U.S. citizen? Are you interested in studying abroad? You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship! 


Here’s what you could earn:

· Up to $5,000 for studying or interning abroad + $500 from UMD Education Abroad through the Gilman Guarantee program

· An additional $3,000 if you are studying a Critical Language

· An additional  $1,000 STEM Award for applicants who are doing STEM-related research abroad

·  and 12 months of noncompetitive eligibility for federal employment for Gilman scholars

CyberCorps: Scholarship for Students (SFS) Application OPEN

 The ACES (Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students) program has opened applications for the 2024 CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service (SFS) scholarship.

Applications are due June 30, 2024.


The CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program, seeks to encourage cybersecurity education and workforce development. In partnership with the National Science Foundation, ACES provides scholarships for students who commit to working for Federal, State, Local or Tribal governmental organizations after graduation.


This scholarship covers full tuition and fees at UMD for two or three years and provides funds for course materials, and professional development, as well as an annual stipend for living expenses ($27,000 per year for undergraduates.) Upon graduation, students commit to working for a Federal, State, Local, or Tribal government organization in a cybersecurity related for a period equal to the length of the scholarship.


Students must be enrolled in the ACES Minor in order to receive the SFS scholarship. Additional information can be found on the ACES website

The Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction Writing honors the memory of Sebastian Herbstein, a talented writer, dedicated scholar and son of UMD professor, Judith Freidenberg. The Scholarship provides two prizes, $1,000 for first prize and $600 for second prize, for works of short fiction of 5,000 words or less. All full-time UMD undergraduate students are eligible to apply (must be returning to UMD in Fall 2024).

JUNIORS Applying to Law School

The Jay G. Cohen Memorial Student Opportunities Endowed Scholarship Fund honors the memory of Jay G. Cohen, a prominent Baltimore attorney and proud Terp husband and father.
  • This fund will provide students with resources to pay for part (or all) of an LSAT preparation course
  • Additional expenses incidental to the law school admissions process (e.g. application fees, transportation for visits, etc.). 
All full-time UMD undergraduate students are eligible to apply; preference given to students in their junior year, or non-graduating Spring 2024 seniors.


BSOS SCHOLARSHIPS

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences offers a variety of scholarships to current and returning BSOS students (rising sophomores, juniors and seniors). Eleven (11) different scholarships (some with multiple award recipients) are available for the Fall 2024 semester. 
  • Scholarships are available to specific majors (ECON, PSYC, BIO PSYC/NEUR)
  • To residents of specific geographic regions (Gloucester, Camden or Burlington counties in New Jersey or attended William Penn Charter School, Philadelphia, PA; see Herskowitz Endowed Scholarship Award).
  • A scholarship available to students from Nassau or Suffolk counties in Long Island, New York; see Portogallo Family Endowed Scholarship. 
  • First generation students (see Jean & Robert Steele Scholarship and the Montgomery Family Endowed Scholarship).
  • Graduated from a secondary school in Europe, Asia, South America, the Middle East, Africa, or Canada (see Benjamin, Mary, and Maryanne Sharp Endowed Scholarship).

For UNDOCUMENTED/FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS

The Terp DREAM Scholarship is intended to provide scholarships to undergraduate, undocumented, first-generation students who have completed at least one semester at the University of Maryland and who have financial need. Multiple scholarships will be distributed, between $250-$1,000.

Sustainability Internship Scholarship

 Sustainability Internship Scholarship

The Sustainability Internship Scholarship will help off-set expenses associated with an unpaid internship.  Scholarship awards ranging from $500-$1,500 are available to help offset expenses.


Eligibility

·      The internship must be related to sustainability or with an organization that aligns with the UN’s organization aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

·      Registered UMD undergraduate students returning to campus for fall 2004. May 2024 graduating seniors are not eligible. 

·      A secured summer unpaid internship with a nonprofit or government agency.

·      Supervised by a professional in the field.

·      All class years are welcome to apply.

 

This scholarship is made possible through a partnership between UMD's Student Government Association, Office of Sustainability and the University Career Center & The President’s Promise.

Bright Futures Initiative

 Bright Futures Initiative: 'Unpaid Internship' Scholarship

The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,000 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships.

 

Eligibility

·      Registered UMD undergraduate students returning to campus for fall 2004.  May 2024 graduating seniors are not eligible.

·      A secured unpaid on-campus and off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency for summer 2024.

·      A new internship experience during summer 2024 and completed by the start of the fall 2024 semester.

·      Supervised by a professional in the field.

·      Preference will be given to juniors and seniors graduating in December. 

·      Preference will also be given to those who have not previously received this scholarship.

 

This scholarship is generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.

2024 Teresa Haven Scholarship

 ATHEN is a professional association and network for Access Technology in Higher Education. The purpose of ATHEN is to collect and disseminate best practices in access technology in the higher education environment as well as present a collective voice for the professional practice of access technology in higher education.

ATHEN would like to remind all that the 2024 Teresa Haven Scholarship for Students with Disabilities is open for applications. Applicants must have all documents and forms submitted by March 31, 2024.


Eligibility and award information

  • Enrollment in a post-secondary institution in the United States during the award period or evidence of acceptance to a postsecondary institution in the United States immediately following the award period (i.e. award granted in May, student must be accepted to a postsecondary institution for Fall semester of that same year.)
  • Must be a student with a disability
  • Registration for a minimum of six (6) credit hours per quarter/semester
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale)

Diverse International Women Of Color Summer 2021 Study Abroad Scholarship

 Diverse International Women of Color’s mission is to inspire, encourage and promote opportunities for women of color to travel abroad, experience different cultures and broaden their horizons beyond the United States. Scholarships provide deserving students the ability to achieve success at their study abroad program of choice.

DIWC will award $500 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to a Study Abroad Program.

Samantha Jennings-Jones Memorial Scholarship for Women in Cybersecurity

The Samantha Jennings-Jones Memorial Scholarship honors the life of Samantha Jennings-Jones, a dedicated public servant and a friend to many in the cybersecurity community. A $5,000 scholarship supports women seeking to start or advance their career in cybersecurity so that others may continue her mission. 

Applicants must be an undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior, senior female pursuing, or plan to pursue, a degree with a focus on cybersecurity, information assurance, or a similar field. Applicants must be US Citizens or permanent residents with a GPA of at least 3.2. Awards are paid to the educational institution for tuition, fees, books, and required materials, not the student.

Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad

 Are you an undergraduate student, Pell Grant recipient, and U.S. citizen? Are you interested in studying abroad? You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 for studying or interning abroad! Gilman also provides a supplemental Critical Need Language Award of up to $3,000 and a $1,000 STEM Award!


In the last two years 82 UMD students received the Gilman scholarship, with a 36% acceptance rate! These students won a total of $329,500! 🎉👏🎉

Bridging Scholarship

Are you thinking about studying abroad in Japan for the fall 2024 semester, the 2024-2025 academic year, or the spring 2025 semester? Learn about the Bridging Scholarship for study in Japan!  Please note that there will be no later, separate application deadline for Spring 2025 scholarships. Summer programs are ineligible. 

If you are an undergraduate student majoring in any field of study, are a U.S. citizen, and plan to study in Japan for a minimum of three months, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a $2,500 stipend for a semester of study and $4,500 for the academic year.


The National Scholarships Office provides information and advising to all applicants for the Bridging Scholarship. The deadline for the Bridging Scholarship is March 15. 2024.

Beinecke Scholarship

 Are you a junior planning to pursue graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social studies? Do you have an outstanding academic record? Do you have a high degree of financial need?

The Beinecke Scholarship program provides graduate study scholarships in the humanities and social sciences to JUNIORS of exceptional, demonstrated academic ability who have a high degree of financial need as demonstrated by the FAFSA process. (For example, receiving or qualifying for a Pell Grant would indicate a high degree of financial need.)

 

The Beinecke program seeks highly motivated and intellectually accomplished JUNIORS who plan to pursue researched-based master's or PhD programs in the arts, humanities, or social sciences after graduation. "Junior" means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study next fall 2024 and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2024 and August 2025.

 

FIELDS OF STUDY: The Beinecke program is open to students planning research-oriented master’s and PhD studies in any field in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Professionally-oriented degree programs ARE NOT supported.

 

FINANCIAL NEED: Candidates for nomination by the University of Maryland should be recipients of Pell Grants or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of underlying financial need as revealed through the FAFSA process.

 

Candidates for the Beinecke Scholarship must be nominated by their university or college. The University of Maryland, College Park can nominate one outstanding junior annually to compete for a Beinecke Scholarship. To seek nomination, candidates must submit a complete draft of the Beinecke Scholarship application and have one letter of recommendation sent to Dr. Leslie Brice Bustamante at the National Scholarships Office by February 16, 2024.

Who may apply: To be eligible for the Beinecke Scholarship nomination, a student must:

 

Have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during his or her undergraduate career. Generally, a minimum GPA of 3.7 will be required for nomination; exceptions may be made in extraordinary cases.

Be a college junior pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Have firm plans to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences after graduation.

Be a United States citizen or a US national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Be a Pell Grant recipient as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of underlying financial need.

 

Award Amount: Each scholar receives $5,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school.

 

Duration: Scholars must utilize all funding within five years of graduation.

 

Campus Deadline: February 16, 2024. This is the deadline for submitting a complete draft of the Beinecke application and one letter of recommendation to be considered for University of Maryland, College Park nomination.

The Voyager Scholarship, administered by the Obama Foundation and supported by AIRBNB founder Brian Chesky, supports students planning careers in public service by providing up to $50,000 for college costs AND transformative travel experiences.

Important: The Voyager Scholarship is for students who are Sophomores in Spring 2024, who have demonstrated financial need, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and plan to pursue careers in public service.

Benefits of the Voyager Scholarship:

  • Financial aid up to $50,000: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid to cover remaining tuition and/or living costs for their junior and senior years of college. 

  • Students will design their own summer voyage between their junior and senior year of college with a budget of $10,000.

  • 10-year travel stipends: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000.

  • Access to annual Summit Meetings

Eligibility: to apply for Voyager Scholarships students must:

  • Demonstrate financial need (as determined by FAFSA)
  • Be finishing their sophomore year in Spring 2024
  • Plan to enroll full-time as a junior in Fall 2024. 
  • Have four (4) semesters or six (6) quarters of full-time academic coursework remaining before graduating
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
  • Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
  • Be a United States (U.S.) citizen, U.S. permanent resident (holder of a Permanent Resident Card), or an individual granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA).
