Office of the Historian - House of Representatives Internship Opportunity

The Office of the Historian of the U.S. House of Representatives is excited to announce an internship opportunity for undergraduate students for Fall 2024. The office is looking for candidates with a background in history, political science, library science, and art history. Our goal is to foster interest in the fields of public and institutional history, archival science, and museum studies; and to provide a behind-the-scenes experience for visiting students.

 Interns may assist with the following tasks, including: 

  • historical and biographical research
  • educational content creation and outreach
  • archival and object processing
  • object, photo, and record preservation
  • curatorial content creation
  • other special projects as assigned

 

The intern must be highly motivated, collaborative, and possess excellent research, communication, and computer skills. The ideal candidate will have research experience; an interest in political history, archives, visual materials; and good writing and outreach skills.

 

Availability

The Office is seeking an intern to work a minimum of 15 hours per week with a potential for an in-person or hybrid schedule. This internship is unpaid; however, interns may work with the intern coordinator to accommodate scheduling relating to potential academic or work requirements. We are located in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,000 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships.

 

Eligibility

·      Registered UMD undergraduate students returning to campus for fall 2004.  May 2024 graduating seniors are not eligible.

·      A secured unpaid on-campus and off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency for summer 2024.

·      A new internship experience during summer 2024 and completed by the start of the fall 2024 semester.

·      Supervised by a professional in the field.

·      Preference will be given to juniors and seniors graduating in December. 

·      Preference will also be given to those who have not previously received this scholarship.

 

This scholarship is generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.

Senator Chris Van Hollen's 2024 Summer Internship

Student interested in working in politics or experiencing working for a member of Congress should applicants apply for Senator Van Hollen’s 2024 Summer Internship sessions. An internship in Senator Chris Van Hollen’s Capitol Hill, Rockville, and Baltimore offices offers an exciting educational and professional development opportunity for students to engage in a hard-working team environment.  Interns will increase their knowledge of the function of government agencies and Congress while making a difference in the lives of others.

To be eligible for a summer internship, you must be a rising college sophomore or older and available to work  for the duration of one of the two scheduled summer sessions. Interns are required to work a minimum of 20–24 hours a week, and intern schedules will generally range from 22–26 hours a week. Priority is given to Maryland residents who are rising college juniors and seniors or older.

Fern Holland International Affairs Summer Fellowship Program

The Office of Congressman Seth Moulton seeks students interested in foreign policy and national security to participate in the Fern Holland International Affairs Fellowship Program, a full-time, paid foreign policy fellowship for Summer. This opportunity is based on financial need and only open to candidates who are Pell-grant eligible. 

The fellowship is in the DC office. Open to current undergraduates and recent graduates. This fully-funded fellowship covers the cost of housing, transportation, and food with a stipend. Fellows will be expected to perform rigorous research, advise senior staff and the Congressman on important issues, and craft policies in international affairs and national security, in addition to some regularly assigned intern responsibilities.

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Summer 2024 Internship Program

The summer-long Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) Congressional Internship Program places rising college sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as recently graduated persons in the offices of Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Members. To take part in this opportunity, interns must be permanent residents in the district of a CBC Member or attend an academic institution in the district of a CBC member.

Through this 9-week Congressional internship program, participants gain practical and meaningful work experience on Capitol Hill and obtain first-hand experience working in offices to assist in the process of effectively running a Congressional office and supporting the policy-making process. Interns receive housing and a $3000 stipend. Interns interact with Congressional staffers, explore various aspects of the policy-making process, and build skills to prepare them for careers both within and beyond the policy arena. Throughout the internship, participants also take part in business networking, team-building events, and leadership development sessions to enhance their professional and leadership skills.

Candidate Requirements
Note: You must use your full first and last name as your display name when creating your application account.

Interns must have at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
Interns must have U.S. citizenship or a permit to work in the U.S. for the duration of the program (May 27th, 2024 to July 26th, 2024)
Interns must have an interest in pursuing a career in public service, policy, or law
Interns cannot be enrolled in classes for the duration of the program (in some cases, the program can be used for credit with university approval)
Interns must currently be a rising college sophomore, junior, or senior, OR must not have graduated with a bachelor’s degree more than 2 years from the internship program start date
Interns must have a general familiarity with the federal legislative process, the U.S. Congress, the Congressional Black Caucus and its members, and related policy
Interns must have superior analytical skills
Interns must have outstanding oral and written communication skills
Must reside in or attend a university in a CBC member’s congressional district.

Summer Internship with Senator Bob Casey

Applications are now open for internships with Senator Bob Casey's Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania offices for Summer 2024. The application closes on February 25th. Internships are paid $16/hour and intended to be full time for each six-week session. Undergraduate students, especially those with ties to Pennsylvania, are encouraged to apply.

Interns receive a firsthand look at how policy is formed and implemented as well as how Senate offices assist and connect with constituents. These experiences are a great introduction to public service and the work of the United States Senate.

Spring and Summer ISF Congressional Policy Internship

Islamic Scholarship Fund Interns spend a semester on Capitol Hill working for a member of Congress. They observe the legislative process at the federal level, develop research skills related to policy, and assist full-time staff with their duties. The Program aims "to expose American Muslim students to the privileges and responsibilities of working in the halls of Congress and inspire a new generation of American Muslim policymakers." 

Participants receive a monthly stipend. The internship also pays for housing. Candidates should be active member of the Muslim community; enrolled at an accredited university in the US or graduated within the last year; majoring in an ISF supported major; 3.0+ GPA, US citizen, permanent resident or a DACA recipient, incoming junior-senior, a commitment to policy-making and public service.

Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program at NOAA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Scholarship Program provides undergraduates with academic assistance for two years of full-time study plus a 10-week, full-time paid internship at a NOAA facility during the summer. 

Applicants must be US Citizens, be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university within the US or US territories (community college or transfer applicants must provide proof of application to a four-year institution), and have overall GPA of 3.0 in their major. 

Applicants should major in a discipline including, but not limited to: oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, computer and information science, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA's programs and mission.

Spring 2024 Legislative Internship

 

The office of Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) is seeking full- and part-time interns for spring 2024. Interns in the Washington, D.C. office will gain valuable experience supporting legislative staff and will learn about the operations of a congressional office. Responsibilities will include: conducting legislative research, providing office support, distributing voicemails, assisting with constituent correspondence through mail and phone calls, attending meetings and briefings, leading tours of the U.S. Capitol, and supporting staff with projects as assigned. Interns in the district office in Beaverton, Oregon will assist the outreach staff and caseworkers, assemble daily press clips, research policy issues, help with constituent communication through mail and phone calls, and attend meetings with the Congresswoman.

Successful candidates will demonstrate professionalism, strong communication skills, and an interest in learning more about the legislative process. All interns will receive a monthly stipend of $2,000, or the prorated equivalent for part-time work. Candidates with Oregon ties are strongly encouraged to apply. All interns in the Washington, D.C. office will work in-person.

APAICS Congressional Fellowship

The APAICS Congressional Fellowship is designed for young AAPI professionals looking to increase their experience in policy and service. 

The full-time, paid, 9-month program, places fellows across House and Senate offices, committees, and leadership offices. Fellows must have completed their undergraduate degree or have at least five years of public service experience prior to the program start date. 

They must be US citizens, lawful permanent residents, DACA with an Employment Authorization Document, or individuals who are legally authorized to work full-time without restriction for any US employer and who possess lawful evidence of employment authorization.

Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship

The US Department of State seeks to attract top tech talent to the Foreign Service that reflects the diversity of the United States through the Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship. 

Fellows receive academic funding: up to $37,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expenses, for the junior and senior years of undergraduate study OR a two-year master’s degree program in an IT-related field. 

Must be a US citizen entering the junior year enrolled in an undergraduate program relevant to Information Technology at a US-based accredited institution OR seeking admission in an IT-related master’s degree program at a US-based accredited institution.

INTRODUCTION TO THE OFFICE OF NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL POLICY

The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) sets government wide policy aimed at reducing the availability of illicit and controlled substances, and reducing substance use through public health interventions focused on preventing substance use, treatment for those dealing with substance use disorder, and developing and strengthening programs for those in recovery.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

The Spring 2024 internship term begins on January 22, 2024, and ends on May 10, 2024. Interns will receive stipend payments of $375/week for part-time interns and $750/week for full-time interns. Part-time is considered a minimum of 15 hours/week to 34 hours/week. Full-time is considered 35 – 40 hours/week. Stipend payments will be calculated based on the full-time or part-time rate multiplied by the 16 weeks of the internship session. Two thirds of the overall stipend amount will be paid on or about the beginning of the internship; the remaining one third will be paid upon successful completion of the internship. In the event an internship ends early for any reason, the intern may be required to reimburse the government for any stipend amounts paid to the intern. All internships are located in Washington, D.C. All intern schedules are Monday – Friday and interns may only work between the hours of 7am – 7pm ET.

Selected interns must be available all day on Monday, January 22, 2024, for onboarding, and must be available for the entire session (1/22/24 through 5/10/24).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  •  Males must be registered with Selective Service
  • Must be able to commit to at least 15 hours per week

CHLI Global Leaders Spring 2024 Paid Internship Program

The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute has opened their call for applications for the Global Leaders Spring 2024 Internship Program. The program invites Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or within one calendar year of their undergraduate degree to participate in a paid internship experience in both congressional and corporate offices. They receive a monthly living stipend, housing, and transportation funds. 

Candidates must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or within one calendar year of graduation, at a 4-year college or university. All majors are strongly encouraged to apply. Those selected for an internship will be required to verify their identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

Louis Stokes Education Scholarship from the Defense Intelligence Agency

The Louis Stokes Education Scholarship is a needs-based program offering tuition assistance to  college freshmen and sophomores enrolled at accredited colleges or universities. Scholars receive financial support to attend classes full-time during the academic year and intern full time from May-August with the Defense Intelligence Agency. 

Scholars receive guaranteed employment upon graduation. They also receive other benefits like annual and sick leave, federal holidays, the Civilian Fitness Program, foreign language program, and Mass Transit Benefit Program. 

Candidates must be US citizens and have all immediate family members have US citizenship, a minimum GPA of 2.75, have exhibited leadership abilities through activities or employment, and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Dual citizenship holders are not eligible.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Democratic Staff Internship

The Democratic Staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee seeks applicants for a Spring 2024 internship. Interns will work with staff teams to provide research, track hearings and legislation, draft memos, and take notes at high-level meetings. Successful applicants will have excellent research and writing skills, as well as academic or professional experience in international relations or a similar field. Hill experience and MD ties are both a plus. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates are all eligible to apply. Law students may apply for a legal internship to work with the SFRC legal team. Additionally, those who would be interested in assisting with committee operations are encouraged to apply. Normal work hours are 9am-6pm Eastern Time, Monday-Friday, and applicants must commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week during those hours. Those with full-time availability are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

SFRC plans to offer remote and hybrid/in-person internships for the Spring 2024 intern class. However, hybrid/in-person internships are subject to change. A hybrid internship would involve our interns coming into the office on a rotational basis each day of the week. Please note that an in-person internship would require you to be located in the Washington, D.C. area.

 

This internship is unpaid, although a limited number of stipends are available to highly-qualified candidates who could not otherwise afford to participate in an unpaid internship. Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency Paid Internships Summer 2024

The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency offers students a paid summer experience that provides experience in protecting national security. Positions in various locations across the US. Students typically work for 10 weeks from June through August as full-time, temporary federal employees. 

Students that successfully complete the summer program may be eligible to return to their internship during academic breaks. Students who receive successful performance reports may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent position. Applicants must applicants must: be a US citizen, enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university, have a 3.0+ cumulative GPA, have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret or Top-Secret clearance, have the ability to pass pre-employment and random drug testing, reside in the local commuting area of the program location during the summer, and other qualifications as necessary for the role.
