Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference March 18-21

The Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (PUNC) XII is being held in a virtual format on the weekend of March 18-21st. It will be a multi-day event where undergraduate students from around the country participate as delegates in model crises that require diplomacy, critical thinking, and collaboration.

This year we have nine committees that will address issues ranging from the Second Red Scare to the United States occupation of Iraq. In addition, delegates have the opportunity to network with other students that have similar interests and aspirations. Everything will take place virtually via Slack and Zoom to ensure the safety of our delegates. Registration is $25 and includes all access to committees and our socials.

LCV is seeking a Youth Digital Organizing Intern who will support the Youth Digital Campaigns Manager in developing and implementing digital advocacy and organizing campaigns to engage and empower youth climate activists. The Campaigns department directs LCV’s federal electoral and issue campaign efforts. The Youth Digital Organizing Intern will support the digital organizing and advocacy in our climate organizing program across the country and learn how to digitally build and empower a powerful activist base that advocates for just and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. Special projects include supporting the creation of digital ads, engaging youth climate activists through peer-to-peer texting and mobilizing activists to take action, strengthening Climate Action’s social media presence, and cultivating stories of climate action. The Youth Digital Organizing Intern will join a cohort of LCV interns. Summer interns participate in brown bag lunches with various members of LCV’s senior management team, including President Gene Karpinski.

Intern Will Gain Experience in:

  • Building grassroots advocacy through digital organizing. The intern will help our Climate Action program’s with digital organizing and grassroots advocacy engagement by engaging with our youth members to continue to build the youth climate movement and advance climate justice. The intern will have the opportunity to use digital tools including Mobilize and peer to peer texting tools like Hustle.
  • Developing digital storytelling. The intern will play a critical role in developing stories of climate action organizing and highlight how climate change and systemic racism disproportionately harm and impact black, Latinx, Indigenous and other communities of color. They will work with the Storytelling team to help identify Climate Action youth volunteers to share their story on LCV’s digital platform and develop stories that can be featured in blogs, emails, and social media.
  • Supporting digital acquisition. The intern will assist in digital acquisition through developing innovative digital ad creative for our youth acquisition program and building digital brand affinity for our Climate Action program.
  • Drafting social media guidance. The intern will help develop social media toolkits for climate action including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter guidance to build Climate Action’s digital presence, better cultivate our online members, as well as organize around key climate organizing moments.
  • Advancing climate and environmental justice. The intern will center racial justice and equity in all of our digital organizing and social media guidance to ensure that we fight for just and equitable climate solutions. The intern will also help create a digital resource library of environmental and climate justice organizing resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Work Experience: 6 months administrative support work, including internship experience preferred. Experience with digital organizing, social media, and using peer-to-peer texting tools is a plus.
  • Skills: Highly organized; strong attention to detail; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong research skills; exhibits solid judgment; critical thinking skills; able to work independently and as a team; able to handle multiple tasks; self-starter; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Experience with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram is a plus.
  • Cultural Competence: Shares our commitment to increasing racial diversity in our movement and organization, integrating racial justice and equity into the work we do, and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture. Commitment to environmental protection and mission of LCV.

Summer 2021, Research and Project Coordination Internship, Center for Sustainable Development, Global Economy & Development

Overview

Thinking about a career in public policy? Committed to improving the world we live in? Think Brookings - one of the most influential, most quoted and most trusted think tanks! 

Interns spend approximately 10 weeks remotely working alongside leading experts in government, international economics and development from all over the world. Brookings also offers students the opportunity to intern in departments such as communications, human resources and central operations management. The mission of the Internship Program is to provide students with a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to their field of study or career interest. Students engage in career exploration and development as well as learn new skills. 

 

Interns will have the opportunity to attend virtual meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events.  In addition, interns will have the opportunity to network with other interns throughout the Institution.

 

This internship, beginning in June 2021, is an opportunity for graduate or undergraduate students in their sophomore, junior or senior year with an interest in either advancing global sustainable development and/or U.S. community and economic development and promoting geographic equity to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.


This internship pays an hourly rate of $15.00, and applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule.

Responsibilities

The Global Economy and Development (“Global”) program at Brookings aims to shape the policy debate to improve global economic cooperation and fight global poverty and sources of social stress. The intern will work with its Center for Sustainable Development team, and gain exposure to a broad set of policy topics related to global sustainable development and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) as well as domestic federal policy, while developing their analytical thinking, organizational, and writing skills. 


The intern will assist a senior fellow of the Center for Sustainable Development with either (i) a project to reimagine federal policy for rural community and economic development, alongside other projects, or (ii) the execution of the 17 Rooms initiative – a new convening and problem-solving approach to stimulate cooperative action for the SDGs. Applicants should expect a range of opportunities, broadly defined under the following categories:

 

General research and writing: The intern will support tasks including literature review, conducting data searches, data analysis, database updates, bibliographic support, fact-checking, and contributing to blogs, research briefs, and presentations.


Event Coordination and Administrative Support: During the internship period, there will be virtual meetings and events for which the intern will provide support through drafting invitations, tracking registration, communication with external stakeholders, notetaking, and coordinating travel as required. The intern will also support the scholar by creating PowerPoints, drafting public remarks, and scheduling meetings. 

 

Qualifications

Education/Knowledge/Skills:

 

Graduate students or undergraduate students completing their sophomore, junior, or senior year in a discipline relevant to sustainable development (e.g., economics, political science, heath science, natural science, climate science, public policy). Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in public policy and promoting equity. Candidates with an interest in either (a) the Sustainable Development Goals, or (b) creating local, regional, and national policies that eliminate poverty and sources of distress in rural U.S. communities are strongly encouraged to apply.


Applicants must have some knowledge of qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods research, and experience in conducting literature searches and review. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Coursework related to empirical analysis or quantitative research experience (e.g., economic analysis, working with federal spending data, quantitative analysis of policy impact) a plus. Additionally, applicants should have prior meeting or event coordination experience and a strong attention to detail.

This is a remote only opportunity. This internship requires you to be located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

Internship, Women and Foreign Policy, Summer 2021

 

Overview

All who are selected to participate in CFR’s Blavatnik Internship Program and Robina Franklin Williams Internship Program receive training in the field of foreign policy and international affairs as well as skills training in writing, research, program planning, and much more.

 

The Council has a internship available in the Women and Foreign Policy program. The intern will build on his or her existing research skills, area/subject knowledge on global gender issues, and writing and editing skills. In addition, the intern will learn about the structure of a think tank.

CFR internships are paid, require a 14 - 18 hour commitment, and are filled on a rolling basis.

 

Summer semester internship opportunities are on a fully remote/virtual basis. 

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • With the support and guidance of the supervisor, draft a blog post for Women Around the World.
  • Assist with writing and editing content, including research memos and briefs, blog posts, book chapters, and other publications, as needed.
  • Conducting research as requested by the research associate and/or fellow on a variety of topics including, economic empowerment, peace and security, child marriage, and education.
  • Assist with the social media presence and marketing strategy for the department, including drafting tweets and brainstorming outreach ideas, as needed.
  • Assist in logistical support for meetings, including but not limited to preparing distribution materials and helping with guest check-in during roundtables and other departmental events, under the supervisor’s direct supervision.
  • Track daily news reports that are relevant for the department.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with an educational concentration in Political Science, International Relations, International Development, Public Policy, Women’s Studies, or a related field
  • All applicants should have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (not including AP classes in high school) by the time they begin an internship
  • Proven interest in and understanding of women’s role in and relationship to U.S. foreign policy interests
  • Previous internship experience with a think tank, multilateral organization or international development NGO preferred
  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel, and strong internet research ability

Global Policy and Advocacy Intern

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is known for its continuous efforts to pave the way for leading a brighter future for families in need. Habitat also advocates to improve access to decent and affordable shelter and offers a variety of housing support services that enable families with limited means to make needed improvements on their homes as their time and resources allow. The office of Government Relations and Advocacy (GRA) leads Habitat’s efforts to advocate for systems, policies and attitudes that advance adequate and affordable housing around the world. Based in Washington, D.C., the GRA team builds the organization’s advocacy capacity by providing the global Habitat network with strategic direction and support to effect change and allow Habitat to serve more families. Additionally, the GRA team maintains relationships with members of Congress, government agencies, non-profits, international organizations, and other policymakers in Washington, D.C. and around the world to inform, advocate, educate, and provide linkages to the field.

As a Global Policy and Advocacy intern, you will support the Global Advocacy Team, which includes the globally-focused Government Relations and Advocacy staff based in Washington, D.C. as well as regionally-based advocacy managers, in their efforts to: ensure access to adequate housing options for all, expand affordability through housing finance options, promote secure tenure rights and equitable access to land for shelter, enable stakeholder engagement and community participation, and foster resilient and responsive communities through housing. 

In this position you will have the opportunity to support the Global Advocacy Team in increasing the capacity of Habitat for Humanity’s network in engaging in and leading policy and advocacy initiatives, as well as play a key role in supporting the success of Habitat’s targeted advocacy campaign efforts. 

The position will work directly with Habitat’s Director of Global Affairs and Advocacy and the Global Engagement Senior Specialist along with other staff in Habitat’s Government Relations and Advocacy Office along with members of our Global Advocacy Team and our national organizations and partners. You will learn from their participation on a wide array of projects related to Habitat’s international policy work and the advocacy campaign efforts including campaign strategy and tools and resources for Habitat’s national organizations.

This opportunity is based at our Government Relations and Advocacy office in Washington, D.C.

Assignment details:
  • Manage global advocacy communications strategy to support global policy and advocacy priorities and targeted advocacy campaigns. Strategy includes both communications from the Global Advocacy Team (i.e. Twitter account, email communications to various audiences, and website content) as well as communications to the Habitat network (i.e. social media guidance, newsletter, email updates)  
  • Support the development of new global policy and advocacy resources and tools for the network
  • Develop summaries and case studies from advocacy work and lessons learned from targeted advocacy campaigns to apply towards future advocacy campaigns
  • Support research initiatives on global housing issues to inform policy and advocacy efforts
  • Track global affairs related to international development and housing and help compile a global policy update for the HFHI network
  • Share within HFHI, the broader Habitat network and externally
  • Compile, synthesize and share (within HFHI, the network and externally) global housing statistics, analysis and research
  • Help to engage in and monitor partnership activities
  • Support and facilitate as needed Advocacy Campaigns Team meetings and projects

The internship will provide our Racial Justice and Equity Intern with opportunities to develop a broad understanding of LCV’s efforts to center Racial Justice & Equity in all of our work and how such efforts might be used to help any organization become a more equitable, inclusive, and effective workplace. Special projects include writing a draft report on LCV’s Racial Justice and Equity work over the past 6 years, supporting the Learning, Education, and Growth Opportunities (L.E.G.O.) League plan learning solutions to foster a culture of learning across the organization, and cataloguing our Racial Justice and Equity Resource Library.

The Racial Justice and Equity Intern will join a cohort of LCV interns. Summer interns participate in brown bag lunches with various members of LCV’s senior management team, including President Gene Karpinski.

Intern Will Gain Experience in:

  • Collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data across the organization;
  • Creating organizational assessment tools designed to evaluate LCV’s progress on Racial Justice and Equity;
  • Researching the history of the conservation, environmental, and environmental movements;
  • Developing organizational change management skills centered in principles of Racial Justice and Equity;
  • Creating and implementing Learning and Professional Development for a complex organization.

Qualifications

  • Work Experience: 6 months administrative support work, including internship experience preferred.
  • Skills: Highly organized; strong attention to detail; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong research skills; exhibits solid judgment; critical thinking skills; able to work independently and as a team; able to handle multiple tasks; self-starter; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Knowledge of history of race relations within the U.S. preferred.
  • Cultural Competence: Shares our commitment to increasing racial diversity and inclusion in our movement and organization, integrating racial justice and equity into the work we do, and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture. Commitment to environmental protection and mission of LCV.
  • Conditions: The location of this position is flexible. Please note that all LCV staff and interns are currently working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participate in Undergraduate Student Study

Participate in a 15-20 minute survey measuring attitudes regarding police, Black Lives Matter, and social media usage. 

This survey is part of a study conducted by Elizabeth Pokress, an undergraduate student completing the requirements of an undergraduate thesis for the honors program in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. This research attempts to understand attitudes towards police and the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the protests in support of Black Lives Matter this summer.
 
If you choose to participate in this survey, you may opt into a lottery for five $10 cash rewards. Additionally, you may opt in to be selected for an experiment that will also include compensation. 
 
All UMD undergraduates who are at least 18 years old are eligible to participate. If you are an employee or student, your employment status or academic standing at UMD will not be positively or negatively affected by your participation or non-participation in this study.

START Summer 2021 Remote Internship Program Now Accepting Applications

 The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (START), based here at the University of Maryland, is now accepting applications for the Summer 2021 Internship Program! 


The priority application deadline, for best consideration, is on Sunday, March 21st at 11:59pm ET, and the final application deadline is on Sunday, April 4th at 11:59pm ET. We were hoping you might be able to share the information below with any students and other contacts who you think may be interested in these opportunities!
