The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is accepting applications for the Summer Research Initiative (BSOS SRI)!

If you're looking for a paid summer program that will give you research experience in the behavioral and social sciences, then we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity! 

The BSOS Summer Research Initiative ipart of the UMD’s College of Behavioral and Social Science’s long-standing commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness.

The SRI provides:

A $3,000 stipend (before taxes)
Travel to/from College Park, Maryland University housing and meals Program activities

Job Opening for the National Endowment for Democracy

 The National Endowment for Democracy, America’s leading foundation for freedom in support of democratic activists, civil society organizations, independent media, and other enterprises, seeks a motivated, energetic, organized, and resourceful Program Assistant to join a fast-paced Global Programs team. This position is based in Washington, DC. 

Position Summary:

The Program Assistant will provide day-to-day administrative and programmatic support to the Global program staff.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Global team with general administrative duties.
  • Assist with intake, processing, and distribution of grant proposals.
  • Maintain the team calendar, schedule internal meetings, and monitor deadlines.
  • Maintain and track internal budgets and generate data for team planning purposes.
  • Help to organize events and meetings.
  • Respond to general inquiries regarding the proposal process.
  • Attend and report on relevant meetings and other events.
  • Conduct research on current political developments, as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs, Political Science, History, or a related discipline is required;
  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in an office environment;
  • Administrative support experience;
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of democracy and human rights as well as civil society issues;
  • Experience studying and/or working abroad is desirable;
  • Experience working with databases and analyzing statistics;
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task;
  • A high degree of organization and initiative;
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.

Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarships

 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships enable US undergraduate Pell Grant recipients to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to US national security and economic prosperity. 

Scholars participate in credit-bearing programs in locations with Level 1 or Level 2 Travel Advisories, according to the State Department. Eligible programs/internships must start between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024. Students studying critical-need languages may be eligible for an additional award of up to $3,000

The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated US military personnel to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. US Citizens.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program

 The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduates with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. 


The program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need. The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day. It also provides a stipend of $3,300Students live at Howard University, attend classes, and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and at diverse locations around Washington, DC.

                                                  

The Program has two major components. First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics, and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

Applicants must be full-time undergraduates with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. Must be a US citizen.

  • Deadline for Consideration (The number of spots available will be dependent on how many Best Consideration applicants accept their invitation to enroll)

Application Requirements

In addition to the application form, admitted students will submit:      

1: A statement of purpose that explains their interest in political data analysis and their plan for using the degree professionally
2: Official copies of all transcripts (MS applicants) OR a unofficial transcript AND a detailed, applicant-generated, academic course plan for the senior year (4+1 applicants)
3: A SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION to upload to your graduate application -- you will need to download the form, fill out, and upload in your application portal [MS track] or before submitting your Google form application [4+1 track]

*Applicants must have earned a 3.0 GPA in all prior undergraduate and graduate coursework.

*International applicants must fulfill all requirements relating to international academic credentials, evidence of English proficiency, financial certification, and visa documentation, as required by The Graduate School.

*Undergraduate work focused on statistics or quantitative methods in the social sciences is preferred.

Standalone MS:

*Applicants must have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, or an equivalent degree from an institution outside the U.S.

Combined 4+1:

*Applicants must be in junior standing at the University of Maryland.

*Applicants must affirm completion of ALL requirements for all undergraduate majors and minors by May before their fifth year. All undergraduate work MUST be completed in order to apply to The Graduate School in the summer before the final year. Students will be asked to officially affirm this requirement in their application. Please visit https://gvpt.umd.edu/undergraduate/major-requirements for a description of program requirements for GVPT. Students with a minor, or multiple majors, need to confirm expected completion of each of those undergraduate requirements separately.

*Students must choose undergraduate courses that satisfy the following three requirements:

1 – GVPT 201 (or equivalent)
2 – GVPT 320 (or equivalent) **Applicants may propose taking this course in their senior year course plan (see Step 1 below)
3 – Two additional quantitative methods courses that focus on data analysis in the social sciences. Courses that would apply include GVPT420, 421, 422, 424, and some sections of 429. Courses from other academic departments are also applicable if they include a strong quantitative focus. Questions about the applicability of any course can be discussed with the Director of the APAN program.

KAGC Congressional Fellowship program

The Korean American Grassroots Conference (KAGC) is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization with a mission of uplifting the Korean American community through active civic engagement and, in turn, bolstering the U.S.-R.O.K alliance. Each summer, we host a cohort of undergraduate students in Washington D.C. and prepare them to work in congressional offices, and as of 2017 we have hosted a total of 25 students from 19 schools in 17 Democrat and Republican offices. Each Fellow is equipped with mentorial, financial, and programmatic support for the duration of their congressional internship. Enrichment Opportunities
Applicants accepted to the KAGC Congressional Fellowship, before their interviews with the host offices, are provided with webinars and one-on-one coaching on resume revision, cover letter writing, and interview preparations. They are also provided with webinars on the overview of the U.S. Congress, legislative process, and budget process. For those placed in a congressional office through the KAGC Congressional Fellowship program, KAGC hosts panel discussions with current Hill staffers, social events open to other interns on the Hill and across Washington, D.C., meet and greet events with leaders in public service, and education programs on the key issues of the Korean American community. For the summers of 2020 and 2021, such events took place remotely via Zoom. All of these events provide our Fellows a speaking role and are open to any students wishing to participate.

Maryland Commission on Civil Rights Leadership Program

 The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights Leadership Program (CRLP) is a free three-day academy designed to provide training and insight to emerging leaders by fostering a comprehensive and supportive educational environment wherein program participants will engage with experienced Civil Rights leaders, scholars, and practitioners in order to learn more about career paths and opportunities in the field.

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients/US Citizens

Are you an undergraduate student, Pell Grant recipient, and U.S. citizen - are you interested in studying abroad? You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 for studying or interning abroad! 


During the last year and half, 59 UMD students received the scholarship--a 54% acceptance rate! These students won a total of $269,500!

CBCF Congressional Summer Internship Program

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Congressional Internship Program places rising college sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as recently graduated persons, in the offices of CBC Members for a 9-week summer internship. 



Interns must be a permanent resident in the district of a CBC Member or attend an academic institution in the district of a CBC member. Interns must have 2.5+ GPA, full COVID vaccination (including booster), be a US citizen interested in pursuing a career in public service, have availability to participate full-time upon acceptance (cannot be enrolled in summer classes), have general familiarity with the federal legislative process, and strong analytical and communication skills. 

Interns receive housing and a $3,000 stipend. Interns interact with Congressional staffers, explore aspects of the policy-making process, and build skills to prepare them for careers both within and beyond the policy arena.

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. 

The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.

In 2023, the Udall Foundation anticipates awarding 55 scholarships of up to $7,000 each.

Boren Scholarships

US undergraduates looking to fund study abroad in world regions critical to US interests can look to the Boren Scholarship. Awards are determined by their duration abroad with special funding opportunities for STEM majors. Programs also include the Regional Flagship Language Initiative and research regarding national security.



Applicants must be US citizens at the time of the national application deadline, a high school graduate or have earned a GED, at least 18 years, planning an overseas program outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, and planning to study in a country of which they are not a citizen.
