Policy Internships with Cornerstone Government Affairs

Cornerstone is a full-service, bipartisan consulting firm specializing in federal and state government relations, public affairs and strategic communications, and advisory services. Our Intern Program is offered to students from second-year undergraduates to second-year law students and Masters degrees graduates.

Internship Programs with Maryland State Delegate Alonzo T. Washington

 


 Delegate Alonzo T. Washington Internship Programs 

Through one of two internship programs, students will be placed in leadership positions on Maryland State Delegate Alonzo T. Washington’s Campaign. Delegate Washington has held office since 2012 and proudly represents and serves the residents of District 22. 


Currently, Delegate Washington is offering two internship programs. Both programs will run for about 2 months. They will require students to work 10-15 hours a week, have reliable transportation, and be willing to engage with local community officials, leaders, and residents. 

After the completion of these programs, students will have developed numerous professional skills, been given supervisory leadership roles, and will have gained the experience of contributing to a local Maryland election campaign. Finally, for those who successfully complete the program, Delegate Washington will be open to writing letters of recommendation and may be used as a professional reference. 


Volunteer Coordinator Internship Program 

As a Volunteer Coordinator, each student will get the opportunity to interact with, forge relationships with, and coordinate members of the local communities surrounding College Park. These communities include Greenbelt, Hyattsville, Lanham, Riverdale Park, University Park, and more. This position will require remote work, as well as work in the District on occasional weekday evenings and weekend mornings. 

The Volunteer Coordinator Intern will: 

  • Work with staff to manage and engage the existing list of volunteers for Delegate Washington’s campaign; 
  • Help coordinate and work volunteer activities including but not limited to fundraisers, parades, and door knocking sessions; & 
  • Be capable of supervising volunteers and conducting morning volunteer role/responsibility training sessions for residents, students, and other community members. 


District Outreach & Programming Intern 

As a District Outreach & Programming Intern, each student will have the opportunity to receive experience with a grassroots campaign. Students will be responsible for engaging with residents virtually and in-person, and will also assist with the planning and execution of District events. Work will be primarily conducted in-person throughout the District, but some remote work will also be required. 

The District Outreach & Programming Intern will: 

  • Work with local community stakeholders & staff to help plan events; 
  • Deliver campaign literature throughout the District; 
  • Make calls to residents, & 
  • Perform data entry by logging Campaign data into system.

Foreign Service Fellowships: Pickering, Rangel, and Payne

 Are you interested in joining the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State or the USAID Foreign Service? Do you want to make a positive change in the world? 

 

The Pickering and Rangel Graduate Fellowships provide financial support through two years of graduate study, internships, mentoring, and professional development activities leading to an appointment in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.  

 

The Payne International Development Fellowship provides similar support through two years leading to an appointment with the USAID Foreign Service. 


IMPORTANT: The Pickering, Rangel, and Payne programs seek applications from students and recent graduates who are US citizens with financial need, especially those who are members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service.

Service Requirement: Recipients of all three programs are obligated to complete a minimum five-year term of service as a Foreign Service officer.

 

Eligibility requirements for all programs:

  • Applicants must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2022 for a two-year program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service. This now includes management. Technical fields are accepted for the Payne Fellowship program.  Applicants may be in their senior year of their undergraduate studies, graduating by June 2022, or they can be college graduates.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
DEADLINES: TBD, but as early as mid-September

English Conversation Partners brings together our international and domestic community for authentic cultural exchange. In addition to being a great opportunity to expand your cultural competency, it is a great opportunity to make friends and gain skills. As a participant, you will have the chance to practice cross-cultural communication in English and share your knowledge, hobbies, and culture. As a facilitator, you will of course do the same, but you will also learn and practice facilitating a cross-cultural group dialogue, a very important skill in our modern globalized world. Staff, students, faculty, spouses, and community members are all eligible!

Job Opportunity at Death Penalty Information Center - Seniors or Recent Graduates

The Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) in Washington, D.C., seeks interested candidates for a year-long Data Fellowship running from September 2021 to September 2022. The Center is a non-profit organization serving the media and the public with analysis and information on capital punishment. DPIC promotes informed discussion of the death penalty by preparing in-depth reports, conducting briefings for journalists, and serving as a resource to those working on this issue. The Data Fellow is the point person for managing DPIC’s data on death sentences and other aspects of capital punishment and plays a key role in creating DPIC’s data visualizations.

We're looking for someone with strong data analysis skills, the ability to create compelling data visualizations, an interest in the criminal legal system, and a strong commitment to social justice and racial equity. This one-year position is great for someone starting their career, or considering applying to graduate school in the near future. The job listing is available online here
