Digitalizing Borders, Stories, and Resistance in The Americas

This course is about the stories we want to put out in the world and how those stories can shape our reality in the digital era. We will read, watch, explore, theorize, and engage in analytical discussions about digital projects, novels, short stories, and documentaries that tell stories about undocumented migration in Latin America, as well as about physical, geographical, methodological, and metaphorical borders. Most importantly, this course will help us imagine, share and make an impact in the digital world with the stories we want to tell using social media and multimedia projects as essential tools to create socially responsible communities.

In the midst of a global migration crisis, be part of a wider activist movement fighting for social change. Sign-up for this three-week course to start telling compelling stories about all kinds of borders.

** This is a one-time class and counts toward Spanish credits.

Online & in the Streets: Protest and Activism in Feminist Movements

How do activists fight for change, both online and in the streets?

Feminist movements in Latin America are at a critical historical juncture. Activists throughout the hemisphere are organizing to demand change and justice, to denounce pervasive misogyny and gender violence, and to envision and realize another world. They are mobilizing in digital and physical spaces under the hashtags #NiUnaMenos and #AbortoLegalYa, to condemn femicide, to advocate access to legal abortions in public hospitals, and to introduce comprehensive sex education in public schools. From Mexico to Argentina, women, lesbians, trans, and non-binary people are fighting together for the right to live without fear, the right to make decisions about their own bodies, and the right to exist in a just world.

As we enter a new digital era, sign-up for this three-week course to learn about how activists fight for change and how feminists agendas changed over time. As part of the Global Classrooms, this course is a unique opportunity to learn from and with activists, scholars, and students from Argentina.

West End Strategy Team is currently accepting applications for paid remote internship positions for the summer 2021 semester. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds to apply and strongly encourage applications from people of color, persons with disabilities, women and LGBTQ candidates.

We are a full-service strategic communications firm working in D.C., New York and Chicago, offering clients a comprehensive approach that includes message development, media relations, online strategy, marketing and crisis communications.

Given the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, this internship is being offered remotely. Interns will join the team virtually during normal work hours and will collaborate with staff over the phone and via video calls. The safety of our staff and interns will remain our number one priority and guide all decisions.

WEST interns have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working closely with progressive, nonprofit and international organizations in a professional setting. Responsibilities include writing and editing materials for distribution to the media, drafting opinion pieces, developing social media content, researching client organizations and their issue areas, researching target journalists and compiling media lists, conducting media outreach, aggregating news content, and various clerical duties. Through this experience, interns will cultivate a working knowledge of highly relevant political and advocacy organizations, the major issues of the day, and the media.

Our summer internship is full-time Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET. Interns will work virtually from home, from late May through August 2021.
