The  APSA Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) is an annual, intensive five-week program held at Duke University. Exciting Future Nonprofit Leadership Fellows Program

The University of Maryland’s Do Good Institute (DGI) and the School of Public Policy (SPP) are recruiting the first class of Nonprofit Leadership Fellows who will enter SPP in fall 2017 to pursue a Masters of Public Policy (MPP) or MPP-MBA degree specializing in Nonprofit Leadership.  

The Nonprofit Leadership Fellows program will create the next generation of nonprofit leaders through a two-year program that offers students an unparalleled benefits package including tuition support, living stipend, health benefits, paid internships with leading nonprofits and NGOs, and a mentoring program that pairs each Fellow with a nonprofit executive.

Maryland Summer Scholars Program


The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  

For the summer of 2017, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 25 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires extended travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

Who can apply: You are eligible to apply if you will have completed at least two full semesters (and 30 credits) by the end of Spring semester 2017, if you have a GPA of at least 3.4 at the time of application, and if you will be enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, in Fall 2017. All academic majors are eligible.

GVPT101 Open to ALL Students

GVPT101 is being offered in the Spring 2017 semester and is open to ALL majors. The course serves as a general introduction to political science. It covers a broad range of political phenomena from small scale negotiation and deliberation to large scale global politics, and from the nastiest form of violent politics (war, revolution, terrorism) to a non-violent politics of principle.

The course also challenges students to consider some big political issues now facing humanity: What kind of an economy should we have? How should we deal with the natural environment? How can we promote basic rights and justice? How can we constructively make sense of the deep conflicts now dividing the world? 

GVPT101 is ideal for students who are working on their gateway requirements or for students who want to see what the GVPT major is about. The course can also count towards the DSHS GenEd requirement. Students should contact gvptadvising@umd.edu in order to receive permission to register.

Winter Course: Gender and Politics

The Gender and Politics course (GVPT 359C/WMST 498Q) will introduce students to the main topics in Gender and Politics scholarship. Race, sexual orientation, class, and gender identity are all fundamental to the critical analysis of the who, where, what and when of gender politics.  This class covers diverse issues such as; women’s participation in political parties, women as voters and candidates in political elections, feminism and the state, and gender and international politics. The class will further expose students to democratic representation theoretical literature.

Public Policy and Legislative Affairs Intern:

Compensation:
MOWA will provide a stipend to each intern. The intern is responsible for securing short-term housing and transportation to and from work, as needed. MOWA is accessible from the Blue and Yellow metro lines in Crystal City, VA.

Timing:
All interns are expected to commit a minimum of 8 weeks to MOWA. Business hours are 9 am - 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday. The schedule will be flexible and will allow for time off as needed. All interns will need to start on January 9th, 2017. Applications accepted until December 30, 2016.

The Maryland Sister States Program, a program in the International Division of the Office of the Secretary of State, was established to provide a forum for the promotion of international cooperation and understanding.  Through broad-based citizen participation in a wide variety of exchanges in areas of mutual interest, the Sister States Program offers countless opportunities to develop partnerships around the world.  The Maryland Sister States Program was established in 1980 and currently includes 19 relationships in 17 countries.
The Governor’s Subcabinet on International Affairs is chaired by Maryland’s Secretary of State. The Subcabinet is comprised of the Secretaries and staff of state agencies (Commerce, Agriculture, Transportation, etc.,) with international interests.  The Subcabinet meets on a quarterly basis with the dual objective of fostering communication related to international projects and creating a strategic plan for the state’s international agenda.

Adele's Circle of Women 2017 Scholarship Application


The Adele’s Circle of Women Scholarship grants annual scholarships to help deserving students who advance the role of women and girls in their academic studies and activities and plan to further this leadership in their personal and professional lives.  The scholarship seeks to aid emerging student leaders and/or recognize accomplished student leaders.  The five scholarships provide a $250 award to a current University of Maryland undergraduate or graduate student.  Established in 2015, the Adele’s Circle of Women Scholarship is generously funded by Terp alumnae. 
Eligibility Requirements for five (5) $250 scholarships:
  • Previous recipients of Adele’s Circle of Women Scholarship are not eligible to apply.
  • Current UMD student (undergraduate or graduate)

GIS Winter Skill-Set Course

Winter 2017 Terrorism and Security Studies Courses with START

Are you looking to gain a marketable skill that many employers in the intelligence community and security field value in applicants? The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism (START) is offering Winter 2017 online courses.

There will be three one-credit courses, perfect anyone who wants to acquire a tangible skill over their winter break, when you may not otherwise have time during traditional semesters. These courses are: Geospatial Analysis of Terrorism (BSST399F), Criminal Behavioral Profiling (BSST399P), and Social Network Analysis of Terrorism (BSST399N). 

These courses are designed for students with little to no previous knowledge of the subject area, so all are welcome to enroll. Additionally, we offer a three-credit course called The Rise of ISIS (BSST338P)which takes an in-depth approach of analyzing the many complicated facets of ISIS.

Security Exchange Commission Student Honors Business Program

The SEC is seeking bright, innovative, results-oriented individuals for its Summer 2017 Honors Program for undergraduate students in the Washington, DC Office and our Regional Offices.  We offer undergraduate students robust responsibilities and experiences that enhance their potential careers. Over the course of the ten-week program, students work with Commission staff on projects particular to the specific Division or Office to which they are assigned. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in seminars/workshops, and roundtable discussions that will provide detailed information and guidance on securities laws.

The Summer 2017 Student Honors Program for undergraduate business students will begin Monday, May 22, 2017 and conclude Friday, July 28, 2017.
Who May Apply: Current sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students as of June 30, 2017.

Duties
Undergraduate students will be assigned to work with SEC staff members on projects and assignments that cover a broad range of the Commissions' work. That work depends upon the division or office where the student works. Intern assignments range from supporting securities regulations to assisting in professional administrative duties such as human resources, contracting, auditing, etc. Students are required to work full-time (40 hours per week) within the Washington, DC or Regional Offices. Qualifications
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college or university to participate in the Student Honors Business Program.  
  • Must be a sophomore, junior, or senior student as of June 30, 2017
  • Relatives of current SEC employees are ineligible
  • Must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student
  • Must be taking at least half-time academic course load
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred

NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries Internship Oportunity

The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries currently has three openings for volunteer interns at it's headquarters office in Silver Spring, Maryland. Volunteer internships may count towards course credit.
 
The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 170,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. The network includes a system of 13 national marine sanctuaries and Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments.
 
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants for the winter session can anticipate a mid January 2017 start date.  Applicants for the summer session can anticipate a mid-May 2017 start date.

4.  These are 30 minute interviews, held in the Career Center.  In the past, they have been very helpful, both for the student and the schools.  They are business formal in attire.
