Founded in 1965 by Dr. Ruth Sullivan and sixty parents of children with autism, the Autism Society is the leading source of trusted and reliable information about autism. Through its strong national network of affiliates, the Autism Society is well-positioned to directly influence the policy issues and address the potential challenges faced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.
The Autism Society is seeking a bright, hardworking, and motivated individual to join our Public Policy and Advocacy division as a fellow. The Dr. Ruth Christ Sullivan Public Policy Fellow would help to plan and prepare for the Autism Society’s annual legislative action Day on the Hill and assist with federal, state and local key public policy and advocacy issues impacting millions of individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorder. The paid fellowship is part-time, approximately 10 to 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Attend pertinent committee meetings, public hearings, and coalition meetings as assigned
  • Track, analyze and report on disability policy issues and priorities such as employment, housing, education, healthcare, Social Security / SSI & SSDI
  • Assist in planning the Autism Society’s annual Day on the Hill
  • Arrange meetings with Congressional officials and staff members
  • Assist in coordinating response campaigns
  • Arrange Public Policy conference calls and meetings
  • Prepare minutes after calls and meetings
  • Interact with federal and state advocacy leaders to develop collaborative relationships
  • Draft articles on public policy relating to autism
  • Assist in scheduling local advocacy contacts with local and state representatives
  • Gather information on autism-related and disseminate via social media, advocacy alerts and other programs
  • Some social media coordination
