New Summer Courses-MIDCM

The Minor in International Development and Conflict Management (MIDCM) is offering GVPT354 and GVPT355 for the first time during the Summer term at UMD.  GVPT354 is the gateway course in MIDCM.  GVPT355 is the capstone course in international conflict management.  Both courses emphasize (1) tackling global challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset, (2) project-based learning with an emphasis on applications to real-world practice, and (3) building marketable, versatile skills in a pre-professional setting.

These courses are now officially live on Testudo for students to enroll.

In most instances, the courses can fulfill requirements of the GVPT major, including the International Relations concentration. Please confirm major applicability with your GVPT Advisor.

Key details:

·         Both courses are offered during the Summer II session (July 13 – August 21).

·         The top-notch instructors of the courses have well-established roots in the program:
o   GVPT354: Stacy Kosko (sjkosko@umd.edu) and Matthew Regan (mrgregan@umd.edu).
o   GVPT355: Michael Hess (mike.hess49@gmail.com) and James Covey (jockcovey@gmail.com).

·         The courses will have an online format (following the norm for this Summer within GVPT).
o   The instructors intend to devote substantial effort to adapting and updating the courses for this format.
o   The aim is to achieve highly effective experiences that recognize the challenges of the current circumstances and also leverage them as opportunities for exceptional learning.

·         Plenty of spots are available in the courses:
o   GVPT354: 40 seats.
o   GVPT355: 25 seats.

·         The courses have open enrollment for the Summer only.
o   All undergraduate students are welcome.
o   No program restrictions, no prerequisites, and no permission of instructors is required.
o   Students from other academic institutions can register as visiting undergraduates at UMD to take the courses as well.

·         The courses also fulfill MIDCM core requirements like usual.
o   A major reason we decided to offer the courses during the Summer is to give students greater flexibility in choosing paths to complete the program, in these times of significant change and uncertainty.
o   With the unrestricted enrollment this Summer only, students are permitted to take both courses simultaneously.

·         In addition, GVPT354 fulfills the Global Perspective Elective requirement for students in the Global Engineering Leadership, Global Poverty and Global Terrorism minors.
