Summer Class on Queer and Trans Politics in the Americas (Session 1A)

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with representations of queer and trans immigrants in the Americas! Students in this class will learn about the politics of LGBTQ+ representation in documentaries and short stories. You will have the opportunity to engage with guest speakers and scholars from Latin America. No language prerequisite. This is a Global Classrooms course. Please see information about summer funding from OIA below.

This course examines how queer and trans immigrants in the Americas are represented in contemporary literature and documentaries. We will watch documentaries and read novels and short stories written by and about queer and trans immigrants to analyze how stories about queer and trans immigrants are told. In this course, we will examine questions such as: How do the stories of queer and trans migrants in the Americas circulate? What are the structures of power animating their social and geographical displacement? Through texts and documentaries, we will examine the social and power structures that inform the movements of queer and trans immigrants and their narratives in the Americas. Moving Bodies thus focuses on both the body of cultural work produced by and about queer and trans displaced people and communities and to real bodies in movement.

SUMMER 2022 COURSE OFFERING - Online & in the Streets: Protest and Activism in Feminist Movements

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about Latin American women's movements, protest, and activism! Students in this class will engage in oral history methods, learn digital tools, and participate in group projects with students from Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, Argentina.
How do activists fight for change, both online and in the streets? How have women's agendas and strategies changed during the 20th and 21th century? Feminist movements in Latin America are at a critical historical juncture. Activists throughout the hemisphere are organizing to demand change and justice, to denounce pervasive misogyny and gender violence, and to envision and realize another world. They are mobilizing in digital and physical spaces under the hashtags #NiUnaMenos and #AbortoLegalYa, to condemn femicide, to advocate access to legal abortions in public hospitals, and to introduce comprehensive sex education in public schools. From Mexico to Argentina, women, lesbians, trans, and non-binary people are fighting together for the right to live without fear, the right to make decisions about their own bodies, and the right to exist in a just world. As part of the Global Classrooms, this course is a unique opportunity to learn from and with activists, scholars, and students from Argentina. If you have any questions, contact Sabrina González at sabgonz1@umd.edu.
