Final Call - Boren Scholarships for Critical Langauges

Are you currently studying, or strongly interested in studying a language critical to US national interests? Are you strongly interested in US government service?

The Boren Scholarship offers undergraduates up to $25,000 for long-term (two semesters; one for STEM majors) study abroad focused on learning critical languages. US Citizenship is required, All classes including seniors are eligible. Campus deadline: January 24, 2024.

Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America (esp. for Portuguese), and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships may be used for study abroad in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Spring 2024. In addition to the option of selecting your own study abroad program in these regions, you can also apply for one of the Boren programs Flagship Language Initiative sites:

African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive language study through domestic and overseas language programs in French, Swahili, Akan/Twi, Wolof, or Zulu. 

South Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SAFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive study of either Hindi or Urdu through a combination of domestic and overseas programs. 

Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SEAFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive study of either Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese through a combination of domestic and overseas programs. 

Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI) - Offers the opportunity for intensive study of the Turkish language through a combination of domestic and overseas programs.

Government Affairs Fellow Internship with Mines Advisory Group

Position Title: Government Affairs Fellow

Reporting to: Government Affairs Deputy Director

Location: Washington, DC

Duration:  3 months

Compensation: $3,000 stipend (prorated, $1,000 per month)

About MAG/MAG U.S.:

Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is an international humanitarian nongovernmental organization and joint winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, with a mission to save lives and build safer futures by clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance from countries that have experienced conflict. We are the leading implementing partner of humanitarian mine action programs for the U.S. State Department, also working with USAID, the Department of Defense, and many other global donors. Our vision is a safe future for men, women, and children affected by conflict and insecurity. 

About the role:

MAG U.S. is looking to hire an intern to support its policy and advocacy work and is seeking candidates looking to gain experience in government affairs for international development nonprofits. This position is based in our Washington, DC office, which is currently operating on a hybrid remote and in person schedule. Ability to work in-person at our Washington, DC office two days per week is preferred. Timing and hours of the internship are flexible, with a strong preference for availability in March and April. Stipend is prorated for the length of the internship, to be paid in $1,000 installments at the beginning of each full month worked. Metro transit costs are also covered. Supervisor will also provide necessary support for academic credit, if requested.

The Government Affairs Fellow will support engagement with U.S. policymakers, particularly Congress, in order to inform, update, and educate policymakers on MAG and the broader impact of the Department of State’s office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA), and the US Army’s Humanitarian Demining Research and Development (HDR&D) program. This will likely include:

• Supporting direct engagement with policymakers, mostly in Congress
• Producing internal and external communications about MAG’s programs and developments in the sector
• Conducting research on Congress, politics, and legislation
• Supporting outreach efforts to other policy audiences, such as think tanks.

What we’re looking for:

·       Deep commitment to MAG’s vision, mission, and values, and the ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.

·       Interest or experience in Congress and government relations.

·       Interest or experience in policy research.

·       Interest or experience in advocacy writing/communications.

·       Interest or experience in foreign affairs and/or international development.

·       Ability to work independently.

·       Strong writing skills.

·       Strong academic background in related field (International Relations, Political Science, Regional Studies, Public Policy).

·       Experience with Microsoft Office tools (specifically Word and Excel).

Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship

The US Department of State seeks to attract tech talent to the Foreign Service that reflects the diversity of the United States through the Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship. Fellows receive academic funding up to $37,500 annually (for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expenses) for the junior and senior years of undergraduate study OR a two-year master’s degree program in an IT-related field. 

Must be a US citizen entering the junior year enrolled in an undergraduate program relevant to Information Technology at a US-based accredited institution OR seeking admission in an IT-related master’s degree program at a US-based accredited institution. Must hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and maintain this GPA through participation in the program. Must be able to obtain and maintain medical and security clearances and suitability requirements.

Samuel Huntington Public Service Award

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides $30,000 stipends for graduating college seniors to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. Projects that have the potential to be sustainable are favored, and therefore many of the projects initiated by past award recipients continue to benefit people today.

First presented in 1989, the award has provided 88 outstanding young people the opportunity to bring their extraordinary spirit of public service to reality. Non-US citizens can apply if they are graduating from a US college/university.

IDEAS Grant Applications

The US Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for US Students Program seeks applications from US colleges and universities for projects to create, expand, and/or diversify outbound study abroad programs and/or resources that align with US foreign policy goals. 

The 2024 grant competition will award grants of up to $35,000. In support of the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, this cycle will also award an IDEAS consortium grant of up to $50,000 to a consortia of US colleges and universities for a collaborative project focused on building study abroad capacity at community colleges preparing students for careers in STEM, technical, and/or vocational fields.

Remote International Communications Internship

APSIA seeks an undergraduate for our part-time Spring 2024 remote Communications and Marketing Internship. 

Students can work from any location, but they must be eligible to work in the US and have some availability during ET business hours. Our interns develop a portfolio of website, social media, video, print, and other content for relevant audiences around the world. They also help to evaluate marketing analytics and Return on Investment. 

We provide a $500 stipend per internship term.

APIA Scholarship

The APIA Scholarship is open to AANHPI undergraduates attending any US accredited university or college. Amounts range from $2,500 one-year awards to $20,000 multi-year awards. 

APIA Scholars has a special focus on supporting AANHPI students who live at or below the poverty line; are in the first generation of their family to attend college; and, are representative of the APIA community’s (geographic and ethnic) diversity. 

Strong applicants have an emphasis on community service and leadership. Must be a citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the US, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, or Palau; be enrolling/continuing as a degree-seeking undergraduate in a US accredited college or university; have a 2.7+ GPA; and apply for federal financial aid for the academic year using the FAFSA.

Spring and Summer ISF Congressional Policy Internship

Islamic Scholarship Fund Interns spend a semester on Capitol Hill working for a member of Congress. They observe the legislative process at the federal level, develop research skills related to policy, and assist full-time staff with their duties. The Program aims "to expose American Muslim students to the privileges and responsibilities of working in the halls of Congress and inspire a new generation of American Muslim policymakers." 

Participants receive a monthly stipend. The internship also pays for housing. Candidates should be active member of the Muslim community; enrolled at an accredited university in the US or graduated within the last year; majoring in an ISF supported major; 3.0+ GPA, US citizen, permanent resident or a DACA recipient, incoming junior-senior, a commitment to policy-making and public service.

Our Communications Director is seeking an intern(s) to manage both internal and external communications for our team.
