Legislative Aide/Legislative Director

Maryland Senator Ariana Kelly’s office is seeking a detail-oriented, highly motivated, and passionate legislative staffer to add to her office. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a seasoned legislator who is new to the Senate. Senator Kelly’s legislative agenda focuses on initiatives to increase health equity, reduce gender-based violence and promote family economic security and all forms of social justice.

The Legislative Aide/Director will be responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of the Senator’s short- and long-term legislative goals and in-district events. Title and salary will be based on the right candidate's amount of legislative experience.

Responsibilities:

● Providing legislative support to the Senator and Chief of Staff
● Preparing testimony and talking points for hearings and other speaking engagements
● Working collaboratively with advocates and coalitions on legislative priorities
● Meeting with stakeholders and constituents on a variety of issues
● Tracking issues specific to the legislator’s district and Committee assignment
● Manage the Senator’s inbox with the Chief of Staff, ensuring a timely response to all constituents
● Managing constituent casework and outreach utilizing the Maryland General Assembly’s preferred CRM
● Assisting in planning special events and professionally staffing the Senator at events in Annapolis and the district
● Assisting with drafting social media copy, newsletters, and website management
● Cultivate relationships with staff, advocates and Government Officials to advance Senator’s legislative agenda
● Maintain scholarship program and distribute D16 Senatorial Scholarships annually

Legislative Aide Qualifications:
● Highly organized and keen eye for detail
● Strong written and oral communication skills
● Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects at the same time
● Basic knowledge of the legislative process
● 1-2 years of administrative office experience, casework, issue advocacy, and/or previous experience interning or working in the Maryland General Assembly
● Experience with state or local politics, preferably in Maryland
● Demonstrated commitment to and experience with family economic security, healthcare, reproductive justice, criminal justice, gender justice, and/or gun safety issues.
● Knowledge of Montgomery County and Maryland politics
● Experience with Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel; an ability and willingness to learn new software programs, databases, and apps
● The ability to work independently, remotely, and as a team

Legislative Director:
● A candidate for Legislative Director will have the above qualifications and,
● 2+ years of legislative experience;
● 2+ years working in the Maryland General Assembly or on Capitol Hill
● Experience drafting legislation, talking points, press releases, and constituent communications
● Existing relationships in Annapolis and/or demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with legislative stakeholders
● Professional experience with family economic security, healthcare, reproductive justice, criminal justice, gender justice, and/or gun safety issues.

This position requires availability for extended work hours, including late night and weekend work, during the 90-day legislative session (January–April). Significant schedule flexibility is available during the legislative interim (May−December). This position is based in Annapolis 5 days a week during the
Legislative session and provides the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule during the interim. The title of
Legislative Aide/Legislative Director and salary will be commensurate with experience. Salary Range:
$50,000-$70,000
