Optimal Solutions Group, LLC is a non-partisan, public policy research firm that prides itself on the objectivity and rigor of its work. Located in College Park, Maryland, Optimal provides research, evaluation and real time analytics services to policy makers within the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the US Agency for International Development, the US Department of Agriculture, the US Department of Education, and the Small Business Administration to name a few. To enhance these efforts, Optimal is seeking a statistician/sampling methodologist to work closely with its social science teams and consulting, leading academics and subject matter experts. The successful candidate will:
  • Work closely with project teams to develop and oversee the implementation of experimental and quasi-experimental designs that can provide the highest possible level of rigor to Optimal each project
  • Work closely with project teams to develop and oversee the implementation of sample designs that will bring the highest possible levels of power and precision to each Optimal project at a minimum possible cost to our clients
  • Oversee the acquisition of appropriately complete and useable sample frames
  • Develop and apply weights that assure the representativeness of each project while  preserving the (or in rare cases, improving upon) power and precision of the original sample design
  • Advise project team management on, and where appropriate conduct, appropriate analytic approaches including linear, non-linear, non-parametric and multilevel techniques
  • Objectively assess and report upon the  limitations of the Optimal projects s/he oversees
  • Be highly proficient in Stata, R and/or SPSS
  • Work in close concert with Optimal teams of social scientists
  • Be responsible for or assist with the communication of study methodologies and findings to non-technical, public policy audiences
  • Possess a Master’s degree in statistics, applied statistics or, alternately, a quantitative social science with an emphasis on sampling, design and empirics
