As a grassroots environmental nonprofit, the Maryland Sierra Club offers many internship opportunities for those passionate about advocating for a safer, healthier planet. At our office conveniently located on Route 1, students can take advantage of diverse openings in office management & administration, outdoor education, political environmental advocacy, communications & marketing, web design, community organizing, event planning, and policy research.

Our interns become part of the office team and are essential to accomplishing many of the Chapter’s environmental conservation goals. Working side by side with staff and lead volunteers, interns get the opportunity to see how a grassroots non­profit works, gain valuable real world experience, and become the next generation of activist leaders.

Paid Research Assistant Position- Political Science

Description: A research assistant is needed on a part-time basis to help with data input and validation for a short-term (~50 hour) project. The project is about the connections between military organizations and commercial enterprises. The job entails sifting through primary and secondary sources as well as previously prepared materials for business entities that are military-run or military owned. The intern would help input the names of the entities with a short description of the entity’s purpose and founding dates, and validate previously found information before putting it into a spreadsheet.

Applicant must have the ability to hold regular hours during the week, preferably between 2-5 hours a week in my in Chincoteague.

Must have experience using Excel. Previous research experience a plus, along with a good attitude.

Pay: $10 an hour, including paid training

Internship Opportunity at The White House's Office of Management and Budget's Director's Office

The White House Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) Director’s Office is pleased to offer opportunities for Fall 2016 internships. Current undergraduate students may apply for this unpaid internship. 

Responsibilities 

• Assist OMB senior leadership on budget, management and regulatory initiatives
• Prepare daily briefing materials for OMB’s senior leadership 
• Coordinate meeting and event logistics 
• Manage incoming inquiries from government agencies, White House offices and outside entities 
• Assist with correspondence preparation and management 
• Provide general office support 
• Special projects as assigned 

Qualifications: Qualified candidates should have a strong interest in the budget process/economic policy, public policy, and government. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. Experience handling multiple tasks and working under tight deadlines is also necessary. 


Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in learning about a range of executive level agencies, policy areas or current issues. 

Academic Credit: Internships are only offered as student work-study programs and are not for compensation. Students accepted for an internship may earn academic credit while working in our office. Information on academic credit programs can be obtained from school placement offices.

Requirements: Applicants must be United States citizens. Please note that participation is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background check and drug testing.

LGBT Equity Scholarship Opportunity

LGBT Equity Scholarship

The LGBT Equity Scholarship is financed by the LGBT Scholarship Fund. For 2016, there will be two $1,500 awards. Recipients must be full-time students at the University of Maryland, College Park, who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting civil rights for and preventing discrimination against LGBT people. Financial need is not a requirement for the scholarship, but may be taken into consideration.

To apply, submit a short statement (maximum of 2 pages, double spaced) outlining your qualifications for the scholarship. You must also submit an unofficial transcript and at least one letter of recommendation.

The Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) coordinates federal environmental efforts and works closely with agencies and other White House offices in the development of environmental policies and initiatives. The Council's Chair, Christy Goldfuss, serves as the principal environmental policy adviser to the President. CEQ is also responsible for ensuring that Federal agencies operate in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The challenge of harmonizing our economic, environmental and social aspirations has put NEPA and CEQ at the forefront of our Nation's efforts to protect the environment.
