International Development Career Conference

The IRCC conference is designed for young professionals willing to build an international development career to provide them with practical and applicable skills to start their professional path. The sessions are led by practitioners with significant expertise across various regional and international development organizations who share insights on what the work in the sector actually looks like, how to adjust the academic theories and models to the real-life situations, and tips to be successful at the recruitment stages.

The event has proven its effectiveness by constantly reaching a 100% satisfaction rate of students and a 90.4% employment rate of graduates within one year after completion. It is very different from the academic modules as it educates young people on how to utilize the knowledge built during their university studies to be successful at work. It is also different from what general career support courses offer as it is very specific to the sector and our facilitators have the HR background at international development organizations and are able to share the direct guidelines of what students should do to catch the eye of the hiring manager during the recruitment process.
This would be a great advantage for students who take part in the event.

Kindly note that the application deadline is May 1, 2019.

Event: Lessons from 1945: Ethics, the War in Europe, and its Enduring Legacy

Tuesday, April 16, 2019
3:30 p.m. Reception
4 p.m. Lecture
John S. Toll Physics Building, Room 1412

Speaker: Susan Eisenhower
Founder and Chairwoman of the Eisenhower Institute
President and CEO of the Eisenhower Group

About the Lecture University of Maryland Professor of Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering Howard Milchberg, his wife Rena, and their three children Moses, Mollie, and Max, established this lecture in memory of Howard’s late parents, Renee and Irving Milchberg. Renee and Irving were witnesses to and victims of what can happen to society when ideology and lies are accepted in lieu of facts. Howard’s own decision to study physics was motivated by a compelling need for clarity and truth, which grew out of his parents’ experiences. The Milchberg family hopes this lectureship will serve to honor the legacy of Renee and Irving by continuing to give voice to facts and evidence, vital for a civilized society.

Quantifying Gerrymandering- Special Lecture

Quantifying Gerrymandering: A Mathematician Goes to Court - Special Lecture

Speaker: Jonathan Christopher Mattingly

Abstract: In October 2017, I found myself testifying for hours in a Federal court. I had not been arrested. Rather, I was attempting to quantify gerrymandering using mathematical analysis. I was intrigued by the surprising result of the 2012 election, wondering if these results were really surprising. It hinged on probing the geopolitical structure of North Carolina using Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. In this talk, I will describe the mathematical ideas involved in out analysis. The talk will be accessible and, hopefully, interesting to all, including undergraduates. In fact, this project began as a sequence of undergraduate research projects, which undergraduates continue to be involved with to this day.

When: Thu, April 11, 2019 - 4:00 pm

Where: John S. Toll Physics Building, 4150 Campus Dr, College Park, MD 20740, USA Room 1412
